Thud.
A faint sigh left her blush lips as she brought her face down burying it in her palms. Her thumbs slowly worked around her temples.
'What have I gotten myself into?'
The question resonated in her mind as her temper began to build up slowly. To say that she was angry at her own self would be an understatement. She was beyond enraged by the decision she had come to make.
But did she even have any other choice?
No. She did not.
She pulled her face back to look up at the sky. It was a clear night. There weren't many clouds marring the midnight blue sky that night. One could easily make out the stars dazzling in the distance, dancing to the beat of the cold autumn air.
Throwing her head back, she drew in a sharp breath as the events of the past few days came rushing to her mind.
----------------
One week ago.
"Dad?" Ayla stepped inside her father's study only to find his face buried among a number of files.
"Is everything alright?" She couldn't help but worry about him. This was most likely the first time she was getting to see him so anxious about something related to work. He always had a laid back attitude when it comes to getting it all done. Everything seemed to be always under his control.
But from the past few days she could clearly see that it wasn't the case. Something had been troubling him, and all she wanted was to help him out.
"Yes, yes, my child." The old man looked up at her and gave her a small smile. "Everything is alright."
Ayla could only shake her head. It wasn't hard for her to see through his lies. Though at the same time she began to wonder what was so worrying that he chose to lie to her. It wasn't something he would do unless he knew that the truth would eventually hurt her in one way or another.
"Seriously, Dad?" She walked over to his study table, shaking her head. "You do realize that lying to me is of no use?" She leaned over the study table to sneak a glance at the files in order to figure out what was wrong.
But before her eyes could even land on them, they were smacked shut before her face.
"How many times do I have to tell you that all of this doesn't concern you?" Her sneakiness only earned him a glare from the old man. "What goes on around in the company has nothing to do with you! Don't get me to repeat this again." A warning followed his stare before his expressions turned mellow.
"I know, I know. It's just that I want to be of some help to you." She exhaled out a sigh before slumping back into the chair. "Why didn't you force me to study business?"
It was something she was proud of. Never had he forced her to do anything that she didn't like. This included the field she chose to study.
Her passion was in helping out others. Hence, she chose to study medicine. At least that way she would be able to help them out in one way or another. The thought alone made her happy.
At the same time, she would question her choice time and time again. Being an only child wasn't easy. It came with a lot of responsibilities. Or so she was told.
"Don't think too much about it." Her thoughts were interrupted by her father's stern tone. "It's just a small hiccup. Nothing I can't handle on my own." He reminded her.
"Are you sure?" She couldn't help but worry about it even after being reassured.
"I am. Don't you have faith in your own father?" A low complaining groan left the old man's pursed lips.
"You know that I didn't mean it like that." Ayla shook her head hurriedly before jumping on her feet. She walked around the desk and threw her arms around his neck, hugging him from the behind. "I was only worried about you. I don't like it when you stress yourself out too much." She tightened her hold around his neck before. Placing a soft kiss on the side of his head.
"I know." He gave her hands a light pat. "There's no way I am going against either your orders or my doctor's." He added only to earn a glare in return.
How could she forget the last time he ended up falling sick all because of some business deal. He took it on himself to figure out everything that went wrong just so he could salvage the situation. This only resulted in him falling unconscious on the day of the meeting itself.
The thought alone of having to see his pale body lying in a hospital bed scared her. She didn't want to lose him already. He was her only family.
"You better behave." She gave his shoulders one last squeeze before taking a step back. "I came to check up on you because a little birdy told me you skipped your meal." She decided to come to the point. It was the first thing she had to listen to after coming back home.
"Just because you are working from home today it doesn't mean that you get to skip your lunch." She added, shaking her head in disbelief. "You promised that you'll be taking care of yourself. Is this how you stay true to your words?"
Her words seemed to have hit a nerve as his expressions turned sour. "I know. I didn't mean to. I just got caught up in these files. I am so sorry." He gave her an apologetic look, hoping for her to forgive me one more time.
On the other hand, Ayla found herself to be stuck in a tight spot. She couldn't get angry at him too much even though she wanted to express how hurt she was because of his disregard towards his own health. At the same time, she didn't want to go ahead with another 'it's okay' because she knew he was going to do this all over again.
Realizing the fact that he had indeed messed up this time, he tried to placate the silent lady who was glaring at him.
"How about this? You go and freshen up while I get them to prepare the table for us and we can have our meal together. Sounds good enough for you?" He scratched the back of his head while giving her a hopeful look.
Sigh… Ayla shook her head helplessly before giving into his suggestion.
"Fine!" She turned around to walk out of the room, not forgetting to give him one last warning on her way out. "This better be the last time, Dad."
Thud!
Don't forget to leave a review and let me know how do you like the story so far. Thank you for your support.
For the next two days, things were going rather smoothly. Or at least they seemed to be returning back to normal. Ayla had managed to get her old man looking after his own diet while taking care of the things back at the company headquarters. She herself ended up getting twined in the mess of her university. Her sessionals were just around the corner, and there was a lot left of the syllabus for her to cover. With her attention diverted away from her abode, she failed to see the storm which was brewing in the depths of its tranquility. ---------------- Four days before the celebratory party… "I am home." Ayla made her way into the entrance hall, announcing her arrival at the mansion. To say that she was tired out already by the day's ordeal would be an understatement. She was beyond burnt-out. Her steps were brought to a sudden halt when her eyes landed on a familiar figure standing
"We were just discussing your marriage." His words echoed through her mind, giving her a hard time in believing her ears. Marriage? Never in her life had she ever thought of this. The day had arrived when she was going to get the talk. "Father!" Her thoughts were interrupted by her father's raging tone. She found him to be staring back at the old man with nothing but contempt. He was obviously outraged by his act. "There's no need to get your blood pressure shooting high, Mathew." The old man scoffed. "I am only talking to my granddaughter about it. After all, she has the final say in this matter." The more he talked about it, the harder it was getting Ayal to comprehend the meaning lying under his words. There was clearly something she was missing on. What did her father know that was kept away from her? "I have already turned the offer down. More so, you have no right to bring my daughter into any of t
A marriage for business? The words revolved around her mind, the voice of the old man echoing in her ears. Her father married her mother just so he could save his company? The more she thought about it, the more difficult it was starting for her to wrap her head around it. "Dad?" A small whisper left her lips, her eyes trailing across the table to meet his own. "You married Mom for the same reason grandfather wants me to marry someone." She managed to force the words out, but it wasn't a question. To say that she was shook down right to her core wouldn't be an understatement. Based on what she knew, or what she saw during her childhood, her parents clearly married for love. Now that it was revealed to her that it wasn't the case, she didn't know what to make out of her memories. "That's not it." Ayla saw him shaking his head before he continued. "She was someone who belonged to one of t
No matter how hard Ayla's father tried to dissuade her, she had made up her mind. All she asked from the old man was to give her a day to think about it. She ended up locking herself inside her room, asking for some privacy. Other than Nina, her personal maid, nobody else was given the permission to disturb her until she said so; not even her father. She spent the rest of the day going through some old albums from her childhood. It was the hope of gaining some clarity about the matter that was making her reminisce about her past. Her lost gaze jumped from one picture to another as her fingers flicked through the pages. A tear or two would become eminent, filling her eyes up, only to be blinked away. She didn't want her emotions to get in the way. Whatever decision she was to make, it had to be rational. Ayla was clearly not ready to give up on her dreams, neither did she want to leave her father behind. The prior was something
The next day… The clock had struck twelve and the sun was shining in the sky with all its might. It's bright rays striking against the glass panes, trying their best to seep into the room. Inside the spacious room, a demineering figure could be seen sitting at the head chair of the table. His cold gaze was sending shivers down the spines of others. "I don't know how you guys managed to mess this up even after my clear instructions." He was holding everyone responsible for the slightest drop in the value of the company's shares. "Boss, it's not our fault that news about grandfather's deteriorating health got out." One of the men sitting around the table spoke up on behalf of everyone in the room. He failed to understand why they were getting scolded for something they had no hand in. "Do you think I don't know about that?" He scoffed, glaring down at the man. "That is exactly why I had given you all clear instructions not to l
Claude not only wanted to have a proper chat with her, but also wanted to meet her in person. He was hoping that it would give him some sort of insight. He wanted to see for himself the kind of person Ayla was before coming to a decision. Not that it would matter, but he still wanted to do it for both of their sakes. He made Ethan find out her routine before making him drive all the way to her college. "Are you sure, Boss?" Ethan pulled the car over before the main entrance. He looked over his shoulder to make sure that his boss was not doing things in a rush. "Don't make me change my mind now, Ethan." Claude threw a glare in his direction. "There's no harm in meeting her in person." "You do realize that you can ask your grandfather to set up a meeting." Ethan still wanted him to give it another thought. He couldn't help but wonder how the meeting would be going down. "I didn't hire you for not using your brain." Claude
"Excuse me?" Claude rushed into the room and decided to ask for help. "Can anyone check on this?" Even though his words were nothing but a general question he made a beeline to where Ayla was standing with an old man in a white coat. He looked like he was either one of her professors or her mentor. "What is it?" It was the old man who decided to inquire about the matter. "I hurt myself. I need someone to have a look at it." Claude replied with a worry filled tone and a frown. "May I have a look at it?" The professor took a step forward, thinking it was something really serious. But what he saw was not something he expected. Claude pushed his left hand forward and showed him his thumb. It took the old man some good seconds to figure out the problem. There was a small red spot in the middle of it. "Is this all?" The old man threw Claude a puzzled look. He looked like he was either questioning his own sanity or Cla
Claude had come straight to his home after getting his apparent injury bandaged to have a conversation with his old man. Whatever had happened in infirmary, it only pushed him to make his decision. The man ended up saying yes to his grandfather. Claude saw through her. He saw the dreams which filled her eyes, and he wanted to be the one to help her in making them come true. It wasn't that Claude didn't have faith in her. It was quite the contrary. He believed in her. All he wanted was to be there for her. That was all he could think of after their brief encounter. When his old man asked him to meet the lady officially, he turned him down, giving the excuse that he needed to go out of the city right away to take care of a project. It was nothing but a well thought lie. Claude was rather looking forward to seeing Ayla straight on their wedding day. He wanted to give her a small surprise. On the other hand, he was somewhat scared about her reac
