"Ayla?"
Through the silent corridors of the mansion, a worry filled voice resonated. A slight tap of a cane followed each of his steps as his restless eyes jumped from one shut door to the other.
It wasn't like her usual self to go missing without informing him beforehand. Especially not when there were guests waiting downstairs for her: an entire hall full of them.
"Ayla?"
He called out again, hoping to get a reply this time. But to his dismay, he didn't get any just like the previous time.
"Why don't you wait downstairs or in your room, Old Master? I'll look for Young Miss and bring her to you." A meek attempt to bring the old man to his room was made by the maid who had been quietly following him all this while. She didn't want her old master to end up tired with all the searching. But she knew better than anyone when to step in or not. There was no one on this planet who could make him change his mind when it came to his beloved daughter.
"How do you expect me to be at ease when she's nowhere to be found?" The old man replied, shaking his head to the side.
"When was the last time you saw her?" He looked over his shoulder as he inquired further about the whereabouts of his daughter.
"I-I… umm… I saw her when she was still in her room getting ready for the event. I-I conveyed your message and then I l-left." The maid replied in a low tone with her eyes glued to the floor. How was she supposed to look him in the eye whilst she was lying to him? She couldn't bring herself to do that.
"Really?" The old man shook his head once again, not believing his eyes. It wasn't hard for him to figure out that he was being lied to. He could have gotten angry over it, but he chose to shrug it off.
He knew too well how much the staff of the mansion adored his daughter. That was the only reason why he wasn't irked in the slightest bit by the maid's act. There was definitely something which had managed to escape his eyes: something that even the staff knew.
"I am sorry, Sir." The maid could tell that she had been caught already from the old man's tone alone. Hence, she chose to apologize right away without telling him the truth. There was no way she would go against the orders of her Young Mistress.
"You do know where Ayla is as of now." It wasn't a question that left the old man's thin lips, but rather a statement which was only met with silence in response. This only confirmed his suspicion; she indeed knew where exactly Ayla was.
A sigh made its way out of his lips before he dismissed the maid. She seemed to be reluctant to leave at first, but later chose to listen to her Old Master given the fact that he was quite stubborn himself.
Once he was on his own, he drew in a deep breath to calm himself down. It wasn't that he was angry at her. Instead, he was angry at himself for not paying enough attention to his daughter.
With another sigh, he decided to make his way back to the hall downstairs since there was no way to bring Ayla out of her hiding spot unless she was willing to show herself. He would just wait for her to come out on her own.

Meanwhile, the girl in question was leaning over a balcony. Her frail silhouette could be seen from the other end of the room through the sheer white fabric of the curtains. They were the only thing blocking the entrance to the terrace.
Her frail arms were resting on the steel railing, keeping her face propped up. Her ocean gray eyes were set on the horizon, focusing on the moonlit lake in the distance. She couldn't help but wonder what was causing the small waves to come into existence as she wandered through the narrow alleys of her mind.
Was it something which was responsible for these disturbances on the surface of the lake? Or was it the lake's restlessness itself? She failed to come to a reasonable answer.
Knock! Knock!
She was brought out of her reverie by a couple of knocks at the room's door.
"Come on in." She replied, glancing at the room's entrance.
"What's Dad doing now?" She didn't wait for the maid to greet her. "Don't tell me he's still looking for me?"
"He is not, Young Mistress." The maid hurriedly shook her head. "As of now, he's entertaining his guests downstairs." She added to assure the young lady that there was nothing to worry about. It was only when she got a nod in return, did she release a sigh of relief.
"Do you want me to bring you something to eat?" She added as soon as silence took over the room.
"It's alright, Nina. I am not feeling hungry." The young lady shook her head. "And, how many times do I have to tell you this: you do not have to call me by that title. Ayla will do just fine."
"Miss Ayla, you know that it's never going to happen." The maid shook her head as her lips curled up into a faint smile. "That's the only way I am ever calling you by your name."
"Fine! Do as you please." Ayla didn't bother to look into her direction.
"In that case, I'll take my leave. If you need anything, just let me know, please." Nina added, taking a step back. She was a bit hesitant to leave her Young Mistress on her own. She would rather see her mingling downstairs with her guests, being the life of the party just like always. But things were different now—and not in a good way.
Nina glanced once again in her direction. She stared at Ayla's sullen figure for another two seconds before taking her leave.
Hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it ❤️.
Thud. A faint sigh left her blush lips as she brought her face down burying it in her palms. Her thumbs slowly worked around her temples. 'What have I gotten myself into?' The question resonated in her mind as her temper began to build up slowly. To say that she was angry at her own self would be an understatement. She was beyond enraged by the decision she had come to make. But did she even have any other choice? No. She did not. She pulled her face back to look up at the sky. It was a clear night. There weren't many clouds marring the midnight blue sky that night. One could easily make out the stars dazzling in the distance, dancin
For the next two days, things were going rather smoothly. Or at least they seemed to be returning back to normal. Ayla had managed to get her old man looking after his own diet while taking care of the things back at the company headquarters. She herself ended up getting twined in the mess of her university. Her sessionals were just around the corner, and there was a lot left of the syllabus for her to cover. With her attention diverted away from her abode, she failed to see the storm which was brewing in the depths of its tranquility. ---------------- Four days before the celebratory party… "I am home." Ayla made her way into the entrance hall, announcing her arrival at the mansion. To say that she was tired out already by the day's ordeal would be an understatement. She was beyond burnt-out. Her steps were brought to a sudden halt when her eyes landed on a familiar figure standing
"We were just discussing your marriage." His words echoed through her mind, giving her a hard time in believing her ears. Marriage? Never in her life had she ever thought of this. The day had arrived when she was going to get the talk. "Father!" Her thoughts were interrupted by her father's raging tone. She found him to be staring back at the old man with nothing but contempt. He was obviously outraged by his act. "There's no need to get your blood pressure shooting high, Mathew." The old man scoffed. "I am only talking to my granddaughter about it. After all, she has the final say in this matter." The more he talked about it, the harder it was getting Ayal to comprehend the meaning lying under his words. There was clearly something she was missing on. What did her father know that was kept away from her? "I have already turned the offer down. More so, you have no right to bring my daughter into any of t
A marriage for business? The words revolved around her mind, the voice of the old man echoing in her ears. Her father married her mother just so he could save his company? The more she thought about it, the more difficult it was starting for her to wrap her head around it. "Dad?" A small whisper left her lips, her eyes trailing across the table to meet his own. "You married Mom for the same reason grandfather wants me to marry someone." She managed to force the words out, but it wasn't a question. To say that she was shook down right to her core wouldn't be an understatement. Based on what she knew, or what she saw during her childhood, her parents clearly married for love. Now that it was revealed to her that it wasn't the case, she didn't know what to make out of her memories. "That's not it." Ayla saw him shaking his head before he continued. "She was someone who belonged to one of t
No matter how hard Ayla's father tried to dissuade her, she had made up her mind. All she asked from the old man was to give her a day to think about it. She ended up locking herself inside her room, asking for some privacy. Other than Nina, her personal maid, nobody else was given the permission to disturb her until she said so; not even her father. She spent the rest of the day going through some old albums from her childhood. It was the hope of gaining some clarity about the matter that was making her reminisce about her past. Her lost gaze jumped from one picture to another as her fingers flicked through the pages. A tear or two would become eminent, filling her eyes up, only to be blinked away. She didn't want her emotions to get in the way. Whatever decision she was to make, it had to be rational. Ayla was clearly not ready to give up on her dreams, neither did she want to leave her father behind. The prior was something
The next day… The clock had struck twelve and the sun was shining in the sky with all its might. It's bright rays striking against the glass panes, trying their best to seep into the room. Inside the spacious room, a demineering figure could be seen sitting at the head chair of the table. His cold gaze was sending shivers down the spines of others. "I don't know how you guys managed to mess this up even after my clear instructions." He was holding everyone responsible for the slightest drop in the value of the company's shares. "Boss, it's not our fault that news about grandfather's deteriorating health got out." One of the men sitting around the table spoke up on behalf of everyone in the room. He failed to understand why they were getting scolded for something they had no hand in. "Do you think I don't know about that?" He scoffed, glaring down at the man. "That is exactly why I had given you all clear instructions not to l
Claude not only wanted to have a proper chat with her, but also wanted to meet her in person. He was hoping that it would give him some sort of insight. He wanted to see for himself the kind of person Ayla was before coming to a decision. Not that it would matter, but he still wanted to do it for both of their sakes. He made Ethan find out her routine before making him drive all the way to her college. "Are you sure, Boss?" Ethan pulled the car over before the main entrance. He looked over his shoulder to make sure that his boss was not doing things in a rush. "Don't make me change my mind now, Ethan." Claude threw a glare in his direction. "There's no harm in meeting her in person." "You do realize that you can ask your grandfather to set up a meeting." Ethan still wanted him to give it another thought. He couldn't help but wonder how the meeting would be going down. "I didn't hire you for not using your brain." Claude
"Excuse me?" Claude rushed into the room and decided to ask for help. "Can anyone check on this?" Even though his words were nothing but a general question he made a beeline to where Ayla was standing with an old man in a white coat. He looked like he was either one of her professors or her mentor. "What is it?" It was the old man who decided to inquire about the matter. "I hurt myself. I need someone to have a look at it." Claude replied with a worry filled tone and a frown. "May I have a look at it?" The professor took a step forward, thinking it was something really serious. But what he saw was not something he expected. Claude pushed his left hand forward and showed him his thumb. It took the old man some good seconds to figure out the problem. There was a small red spot in the middle of it. "Is this all?" The old man threw Claude a puzzled look. He looked like he was either questioning his own sanity or Cla
