When we pull into the diner, I am happy to see all of our friends waiting outside for us. It is one of those old school diners where you almost expect the wait staff to be rolling around on skates, delivering burgers and milkshakes. They do have the burgers and milkshakes, they do not have the skates though. Instead, all of the staff wear shoes that are reminiscent of bowling shoes.

I smile as Lyall comes over to open the door and help me into the wheelchair. By the shocked look on their faces,

  • The Heir's Child   Blushes

The Doctor's theory was right. I am feeling way better than I did before coming out with my friends. There is no way that I would be feeling this well if I were still at home with my parents. In my room.Alone. For days. That is not something that I ever want to repeat. The fact that I made it as long as I did was quite astounding. Instead of taking me back home, as promised, Lyall helps me find one of the guest rooms for me to rest in for the night. It is one of the same rooms that I spent plenty of nights in while I was a young child. My parents would sometimes go away on business for the alpha for days at a time. Whenever they did this, I was invited to stay in the Alpha family's quarters in one of their guest rooms. That way I was not stuck in the normal pack hall with all of the unmated wolves running around. While most of us wait for our mates, we do have times where it is near impossible for us to not satiate some of our other needs. We might not crazy the emotional intimac

  • The Heir's Child   Normalcy

For a little while, I almost forgot that anything was wrong. The conversation bounced from one ridiculous topic to another. Troy somehow managed to spill cheese sauce on himself twice. River and Mel got into an argument about whether pineapple belonged on pizza. Lyall just sat back and watched all of us with a small smile that looked more relaxed than I had seen in weeks. For the first time since waking up in the hospital, I felt like I was part of the group again instead of being the reason everyone was worried. It was nice.More than nice.It felt normal."So, what exactly are you planning to major in?" Troy asked around a mouthful of food."I still have no idea.""You've had months to decide.""I know.""And you still haven't?"I pointed a nacho at him."Some of us have options, Troy."He dramatically clutched his chest."That was cruel.""Accurate though."River snorted into her drink. The conversation shifted toward college plans.Mel wanted to study business.River was consideri

  • The Heir's Child   Snacks

Lyall helps me into my wheelchair once again so that we can head to the pack kitchen for some much needed snacks. River picks up my blanket and takes it to the corner where a maid will come by later to grab it. "Okay, so...maybe we will avoid ice cream this time. There are plenty of other snacks to choose from." Troy points out."I am not very hungry right now if I am being honest." I tell them. "That's new. We can do something else if you don't want to eat." Lyall offers."No thanks. I will go with you guys and hopefully find something that sounds good when we get there." I tell him with a pointed look at my much skinnier frame than before. He smiles as he wheels me towards the kitchen. Everyone is starting to act more like themselves now that we have been hanging out for the last few hours. I did not realize how much I had missed them being themselves until this moment. "I am going to have some pulled pork nachos." River says enthusiastically when we reach the door."With lots o

  • The Heir's Child   Sleep

Sleep takes me almost immediately. One moment I am listening to the opening scenes of whatever action movie the boys picked, and the next I am drifting. At first it is peaceful. For the first time in days, there are no nightmares. No confusion. No pain.Just warmth.Comfort.Safety.I sigh softly and curl deeper into the oversized seat. Then the dream changes.Suddenly I am cold. The warmth vanishes.A rough concrete floor presses against my skin. The scent of rust fills my nose.I hear chains rattling somewhere nearby.Voices echo around me.Too far away to understand.Too distorted to recognize.I try to move.My body refuses.Panic begins to creep into my chest.A familiar scent reaches me.Pine.Rain.Forest.Lyall.Relief floods through me.He is here.Somewhere close.I try to call out to him.Nothing comes out. Then another scent appears. One that I cannot identify. It wraps around me like smoke.Unfamiliar.Male.Dangerous.My heart begins to pound. The dream shifts again.Han

  • The Heir's Child   Take Two

After the mention of me losing weight, the pool loses a little bit of it's previous fun. Just enough that we all decide to go and watch a movie in the theatre room instead. After River helps me change out of my swimsuit once again that is.The theatre room here is so far beyond any public theatre that you could go to. There are couch style chairs, loveseat chairs and single chairs. They are all placed far enough apart from the one next to them that they can lounge back into almost a full bed.Lyall pushes me over to one of the loveseat ones and helps me maneuver into it. I smile at him gratefully as I unsuccessfully try to push the back of the seat back on my own. He laughs slightly as I struggle before helping me lower it back."This larger one will be easier for you to be in. You can keep your food and drinks right on the seat with you and it will be easier to help you out of when we are done." He explains.I smile at his thoughtfullness as we all settle in to pick a movie. Normally

  • The Heir's Child   Feelings of Fear

The moment I sank back into the sling, my entire body trembled with exhaustion. It should not have been that difficult.A healthy werewolf could have crossed the pool a hundred times without breaking a sweat. Even injured wolves usually recovered quickly once they got moving again. Yet I felt like I had just run miles through the forest in wolf form."That's enough for today," Lyall said firmly."I walked across a pool.""You practically collapsed afterward.""I did not collapse.""You are sitting in a medical sling because your legs stopped working.""Details."That earned a few weak laughs from everyone.Even I managed a smile. For a brief moment, things almost felt normal again. Then another wave of nausea rolled through me.I immediately lowered my head and closed my eyes. The movement made River kneel beside the pool."Rowan?""I'm fine.""You keep saying that.""Because I am."Unfortunately, my stomach chose that exact moment to betray me.I clapped a hand over my mouth.Every s
