Drugs?

"What kind of drug could affect us that way?" I asked my mother.

Tonight was supposed to be a celebration. It was my birthday, Lyall's birthday, and our entire friend group had plans to spend the night partying before our lives changed forever.

Instead, my parents were warning me about a dangerous new drug spreading through werewolf packs across the region.

That alone was enough to make my stomach tighten.

Werewolves were naturally immune to almost everything. Alcohol barely gave us a buzz unless it had been specially enchanted by a witch, and most drugs didn't affect us at all. Not that many wolves were foolish enough to try. Pack life was built on strength and discipline. One mistake could destroy your reputation overnight. Even an Alpha could be reduced to an Omega if they showed weakness.

That was why the recent incidents were so unsettling.

Young wolves between eighteen and twenty-five had been going out for a normal night of fun, accepting drinks from strangers, and waking up the next morning with no memory of what happened.

No one knew where the drug came from.

No one knew what it was doing.

And no one knew why wolves were being targeted.

"We haven't managed to get our hands on a sample yet," my father said grimly. "The healers suspect a witch helped create it, but that's only a theory. We don't know its purpose or who is distributing it. We just want you to be careful tonight."

His expression hardened.

"The victims all reported the same thing. They accepted a drink from someone, and then they woke up the next morning with entire hours missing from their memories."

A chill ran down my spine.

Memory loss was terrifying for anyone.

For a werewolf, it could be catastrophic.

We were stronger, faster, and far more dangerous than humans. If a wolf lost control while under the influence of some unknown substance, the consequences could be devastating. Humans had developed weapons capable of killing our kind, and the last thing we needed was to draw attention to ourselves.

History had already taught us that lesson.

Centuries ago, we had revealed ourselves to humanity.

It had been a disaster.

Fear, panic, and violence had spread like wildfire. Some humans wanted to hunt us. Others wanted to study us. Neither option had ended well.

Since then, we had stayed hidden.

And we intended to keep it that way.

"Just promise you'll be careful," my mother said. "If you're not home before dawn, we'll come looking for you."

Dad offered a weak smile. "To be fair, the victims have all been male so far. She may not be in any danger."

Mom shot him a look sharp enough to make him immediately regret speaking.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

"Did Alpha tell Lyall?" I asked.

"He's speaking with him now," Dad replied. "We're trying not to spread panic through the pack."

My jaw tightened.

"You're serious? People are being drugged and nobody is warning them?"

My parents exchanged a glance.

"Everyone going out tonight deserves to know," I continued. "If they're aware of the risk, maybe they'll think twice before accepting drinks from strangers."

The silence that followed told me exactly how little influence my opinion carried.

"We debated whether to tell you at all," my mother admitted quietly. "Since women haven't been targeted."

Then she hesitated.

My stomach sank.

Of course.

"We thought you should know because you'll be with Lyall."

The familiar bitterness settled in my chest.

There it was.

Not concern for me.

Concern for the Alpha's son.

Just like always.

  • The Heir's Child   Sleep

Sleep takes me almost immediately. One moment I am listening to the opening scenes of whatever action movie the boys picked, and the next I am drifting. At first it is peaceful. For the first time in days, there are no nightmares. No confusion. No pain.Just warmth.Comfort.Safety.I sigh softly and curl deeper into the oversized seat. Then the dream changes.Suddenly I am cold. The warmth vanishes.A rough concrete floor presses against my skin. The scent of rust fills my nose.I hear chains rattling somewhere nearby.Voices echo around me.Too far away to understand.Too distorted to recognize.I try to move.My body refuses.Panic begins to creep into my chest.A familiar scent reaches me.Pine.Rain.Forest.Lyall.Relief floods through me.He is here.Somewhere close.I try to call out to him.Nothing comes out. Then another scent appears. One that I cannot identify. It wraps around me like smoke.Unfamiliar.Male.Dangerous.My heart begins to pound. The dream shifts again.Han

  • The Heir's Child   Take Two

After the mention of me losing weight, the pool loses a little bit of it's previous fun. Just enough that we all decide to go and watch a movie in the theatre room instead. After River helps me change out of my swimsuit once again that is.The theatre room here is so far beyond any public theatre that you could go to. There are couch style chairs, loveseat chairs and single chairs. They are all placed far enough apart from the one next to them that they can lounge back into almost a full bed.Lyall pushes me over to one of the loveseat ones and helps me maneuver into it. I smile at him gratefully as I unsuccessfully try to push the back of the seat back on my own. He laughs slightly as I struggle before helping me lower it back."This larger one will be easier for you to be in. You can keep your food and drinks right on the seat with you and it will be easier to help you out of when we are done." He explains.I smile at his thoughtfullness as we all settle in to pick a movie. Normally

  • The Heir's Child   Feelings of Fear

The moment I sank back into the sling, my entire body trembled with exhaustion. It should not have been that difficult.A healthy werewolf could have crossed the pool a hundred times without breaking a sweat. Even injured wolves usually recovered quickly once they got moving again. Yet I felt like I had just run miles through the forest in wolf form."That's enough for today," Lyall said firmly."I walked across a pool.""You practically collapsed afterward.""I did not collapse.""You are sitting in a medical sling because your legs stopped working.""Details."That earned a few weak laughs from everyone.Even I managed a smile. For a brief moment, things almost felt normal again. Then another wave of nausea rolled through me.I immediately lowered my head and closed my eyes. The movement made River kneel beside the pool."Rowan?""I'm fine.""You keep saying that.""Because I am."Unfortunately, my stomach chose that exact moment to betray me.I clapped a hand over my mouth.Every s

  • The Heir's Child   Pool Exercise

Outside the dressing rooms, the boys are waiting for us next to the pool. They both look a little nervous as we walk out, like they were getting worried about us. They were definitely both talking about me though. The way that they cut off mid sentence is a dead give away. "Get on over here." Mel yells with mock enthusiasm.Even though I cannot fall for his ruse completely, I still smile as River pushes me over to where they are.Lyall shares a quick, concerned glance with River before she stops the wheel chair next to the pool. Luckily, the pool is sometimes used to help injured werewolves recover after some pretty freak accidents, so we happen to have an entire set up for somebody that is injured to get into the pool. There is a sling that all I have to do is sit on, that lowers me into the pool and helps support me as I settle into the water. As with all werewolves, and even humans if it is to be believed, as soon as I reach the weightlessness of the pool, I immediately begin to f

  • The Heir's Child   Pool Time

River follows me into the changing room while the boys disappear into theirs. The moment the door closes behind us, the smile slowly slips from my face."You don't have to pretend in here." River says quietly.I let out a long breath."I know."For a moment, neither of us moves. The reality of changing clothes suddenly feels much bigger than it should.I have changed clothes thousands of times in my life.Today it feels like a mountain.River kneels beside the wheelchair."How much help do you need?"I swallow."I honestly don't know."That alone is enough to make my chest tighten.A week ago I would have laughed at the idea of needing help getting dressed. Now I can't even answer a simple question.Slowly, I reach for the hem of my shirt. My arms feel heavy. Not painful.Just heavy. As though someone attached weights to every limb while I wasn't paying attention.River watches carefully but doesn't rush to help. She knows me too well.Knows that I need to try for myself first.By the

  • The Heir's Child   Pack House

After lunch, Lyall loads me back into his truck and takes me to the pack house. Just like with all pack houses, ours has rooms with activities for all ages. When we were toddlers, we used to stay in rooms that the Luna oversaw. The Luna of each pack always takes interest in the youngest members of a pack. It is almost like it is in their DNA to be motherly. As we got older, we got to play in the game rooms that are practically a full on arcade. There are old fashioned pin ball games, arcade games and an entire wall full of televisions and gaming consoles. There are even mini fridges full of snacks for all of the kids to enjoy after school. For the even older children, as well as those that just need a recreational activity, there is a pool, air hockey, foosball table and even a hot tub. The adults also have access to a sauna and a massage room. As we all start military style training at a young age, we all have to be able to take care of ourselves as well. The term train hard and pla
