The ballroom of the Laurent Atelier sparkled like the perfect housewife's home without a single trace of disaster.

Crystal chandeliers spilled gold over marble tiles. Cameras blinked behind velvet ropes. Models in silk and diamonds glided past crowds in gowns that were each unique to the Laurent collection.

Vivienne Laurent stood beneath the largest of the ballroom's many chandeliers and tried not to feel like an intruding guest at her family's celebration.

" Smile , " her stepmother murmured beside her.

Celeste's hand rested lightly on her arm, but to Vivienne, it was a threat. The camera flashes flared, snapping pictures of her as the newest addition to the Laurent family.

"This will be a good night for you, " Celeste continued, her scarlet lips barely opening as she spoke. " Make sure it is not made difficult. "

Vivienne's smile grew tighter.

"I will do that. "

"Good, " Celeste said, trailing her gaze over Vivienne's black satin dress. The silver embroidery at its cuffs made Celeste's eyes narrow. "Your father has gone to a great deal of trouble for you."

That's what she was most afraid of

Lucien never went out of his way to help anyone unless he was sure to make a profit.

In the ballroom across the street, her father stood near the stage, a cluster of board members and investors surrounding him. At fifty-eight years old, Lucien still looked every bit the man that magazine spreads made him out to be - silver at his temples, a meticulously kept tuxedo, and a smile that could make men feel as if he were a friend.

He turned when his eyes caught sight of her walking towards the stage.

For one fleeting second, his expression was cold.

But then the cameras were all on him, and Lucien had a warm smile as he said, "My daughter."

Crowds drew back to make a path as Vivienne walked closer.

Each step was too loud over the marble.

Tonight was supposed to be different.

It was what Adrian had promised her.

Adrien arrived at her side before she walked up on stage, hands wrapped around a well-cut pair of dark slacks, his familiar scent of cedar surrounding him. She didn't know why it was so familiar.

"You look so nervous," he whispered.

"I am. "

"You don't need to be, " Adrien murmured, brushing a kiss across her temple. "After tonight, everything changes for the better. "

Vivienne studied his face.

They had dated two years in a row, and all of those years had been spent in the wake of Lucien's dismissal of her ideas in board meetings. Adrien had listened when Celeste had taken credit for her sketches and forced her to be patient in choosing the right moment to stand up for herself. Finally, he had been able to convince his father to let her sit and vote on the board.

A place on the family business.

A vote.

A voice in her own home.

You promise? she asked, her pulse pounding as the band struck up their first song.

Adrien was smiling.

"I promise. "

The music died down as Lucien stepped up to the edge of the stage, raising a glass of champagne in toast. Conversations lulled as the crowds turned to face him, all with the obedient grace of powerful men who knew their own importance.

"Tonight, we celebrate the future of the Laurent Atelier. " Lucien's voice rang out over the room, garnering applause from the crowd. Vivienne stood sandwiched between Adrien and Celeste, waiting as her father made his speech.

"For generations, this house has symbolized a certain brand of beauty, discipline, and family. We have experienced tragedy in our time, as well as loss, and each time, we have come out stronger than ever. "

Lucien let his gaze drift over his daughters.

"My eldest daughter has carried such a difficult burden since the death of her mother. But tonight, she gets to enjoy the rightful place here beside us. " The applause was even louder.

Vivienne's breath caught in her throat.

It was the closest thing to a compliment he had ever given her in public.

A legal assistant arrived at the edge of the stage, laying a black folio against the marble as well. Lucien took it from him and handed it to Vivienne.

"These documents will formalize the restructuring of our family holdings. " Lucien stated, handing Vivienne the document. " This will ensure that the legacy of the Laurent Atelier will endure. "

Vivienne took the folio from him, her pulse racing as a familiar scent of cedar hung around the room.

Adrien's hand hovered over her side. " It's what we talked about. Your shares will be placed in a protected voting structure. Your father wants to make sure you are secure. "

Vivienne opened the folio.

Her eyes skimmed across the fine print of the document, stopping briefly on sections on trust, corporate restructuring, and inheritance, until they landed on a section at the bottom of the page.

Transfer of Voting Authority.

She gave a sharp glance at the page. Another, slower look.

Her fingers grew numb as she scanned the paragraph.

The document did not protect her voting power.

It transferred it.

Every single share of her mother's was destined to be placed in the hands of a holding company named Moreau Strategic Assets. Adrien's company owned Moreau Strategic Assets.

Vivienne looked up slowly.

"Adrien? "

His mouth didn't change.

"Vivienne, " Adrien said softly. "Let's just not do this here."

A strange tightness blossomed in her chest as she turned the page over. A clause granting Adrien provisional authority over her personal trust assets was written on the final page.

Temporary authority. That included her inheritance and everything her mother had left her.

"What is this?" Vivienne asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The nearby guests were still laughing, but the applause began to thin.

Lucien's face didn't alter.

"It is a necessary precaution. "

"Why does Adrien's company control my shares?“Because Adrien understands business,” Lucien answered. "And because you have always been too emotional where this family is concerned."

Something old stirred in her, words she had heard before. Too emotional. Too sensitive. Too easily distracted by art and sentiment.

Vivienne turned her gaze to Adrien.

"Did you know?"

His silence was only for a heartbeat, but it was enough.

The ballroom seemed to lurch.

"You knew, " Vivienne whispered.

Adrien's hand tightened around his grasp on Vivienne's own, pressing her fingers over the pen.

"Listen to me, " Adrien murmured under his breath. "Sign it. Please. "

"Why? "

"Because this is bigger than you. "

She stared at him.

The man she loved. The man who had promised that they would change the future of the Laurent Atelier together. The man who had kissed her this morning and claimed to be her future.

His eyes didn't change.

They weren't cruel.

They were afraid.

"Adrien, " Vivienne said, her breath catching, "what have you done?"

His jaw tightened.

"Just sign the papers."

The room fell to complete silence.

Music continued to play in background. Glass clinked. But those closest to the stage had drawn back to watch the confrontation.

Vivienne set down the pen.

"No. " Her voice shook slightly as she spoke the next words. "I will not sign away my mother's shares to a company that Adrien owns. "

Celeste inhaled sharply, timing her breath exquisitely with each word.

"Darling, " she said, stepping forward. "You misunderstood the arrangement. "

"I understand it perfectly, " Vivienne said, flipping the page over in her hands. Her eyes landed on the first line of a separate clause. "These accounts... why is my name attached to them? " Her heart pounded as Vivienne's pulse raced.

Adrien reached out to take the folio from her grasp.

She yanked it away from his hands.

"Vivienne, " Adrien warned for the first time. But there was something beneath his calmness that was dark. She looked at Lucien. "You used my name. " Her voice came out in a whisper against the room's noise. " You used my trust, and then moved the money through the foundation and put it under my authorization. "

"Lower your voice, " Lucien said quietly.

"No. " It was a single word that rang out in the ballroom. Every head turned to look in their direction.

Vivienne's heart pounded so hard it nearly made her knees buckle. But there was something beneath the fear that made her angry. She had spent her life being polite enough to keep things calm enough for the entire family to smile together.

Tonight, she understood it was the first time she had ever been truly included in that peace.

"I will not sign this, " Vivienne said, meeting Lucien's unwavering stare. " And I will not take responsibility for the money I never used. "

Adrien's face fell, and for the first time, she saw something that resembled panic.

"You have no idea what you're doing," he said quietly.

"No, " Vivienne whispered back. " But I know that you did. "

Before Adrien could answer, the doors to the ballroom began to open.

A gunshot seemed to ring out in the silence as a crowd of people dressed in dark suits filed in, followed by uniformed officers. The music stopped completely, gasps ringing out like broken glass on marble. One of the guests near the front dropped a champagne glass, shattering it across the floor.

A woman near the front of the crowd held up a badge. " Vivienne Laurent? "

Vivienne turned slowly.

“I’m Vivienne Laurent.”

The woman's expression didn't change.

"I'm Special Investigator Renard with the Financial Crimes Division. You are being detained in connection with the embezzlement of funds from the Laurent Foundation. "

For a second or two, Vivienne didn't understand the meaning of the words.

But then her eyes met her father's and her grip tightened around Adrien's arms. She looked down at the papers in her hands, Adrien's silence, and the accusations she had heard floating through the air.

The investigator stepped up to her. "You have the right to remain silent. "

Her grip had tightened into a fist around the folio. Adrien looked at her as if there was still a chance he could speak, tell her something different, but then Lucien laid a hand on Adrien's shoulder.

Adrien looked down at Vivienne.

The clink of chains wrapped around her wrists.

A soft sound.

The end.

As the cameras began to flash, Vivienne looked at the man she had loved and recognized the truth.
