Caleb's POV

"Man, you need to relax," I said, tossing the ball back toward Dre. “We literally just played a full game yesterday, be grateful coach even let us breathe today."

Dre caught it and shook his head.

"Easy for you to say," he muttered. "You weren't the one getting cooked out there."

The guys around us laughed.

Someone threw a towel at Dre from across the field, and he ducked it badly, which made everyone laugh harder.

It was that kind of morning, loose and easy, just a light session to

Caleb's POVBy the time Sunday morning practice ended, my shoulder was burning. Not the sharp kind of pain that followed me for weeks. This was different. It was the good kind. It reminded me I was getting closer.“Again.”Coach didn’t even glance up from his clipboard.I caught another football from the trainer, rolled my shoulder once, then threw a clean short pass right into Marcus’ chest. He caught it one-handed.“Damn,” he muttered. “You’re starting to look like yourself again.”I caught the ball, fighting a smile.“Don’t tell Coach that.”“Too late.”Coach finally looked over.“I heard that.”A few of the guys laughed.Training had changed over the last week. I wasn’t standing on the sidelines anymore. I was throwing again. Running controlled drills. Every day the trainers trusted my shoulder a little more.“That’s enough,” Coach called after my next throw. “Don’t get greedy.”I tossed the ball back to Marcus. As we headed toward the locker room, he bumped my shoulder slightly.

  • The Heiress's Choice    125. Maybe

Elena's POVBy Saturday afternoon, life had somehow settled back into something almost… normal.Almost.After everything that had happened Thursday night, the last two days had passed surprisingly quietly.Caleb had looked me in the eye and quietly promised he was going to ask me properly this time.Since then, neither of us had brought it up again. Somehow… life had simply kept moving.Which was probably why Adrian insisted we all come over for lunch.“Caleb, I swear if you let Ethan beat you one more time on purpose I’m telling him,” Adrian said from across the table.Caleb looked up from where Ethan stood beside him with both arms thrown into the air in victory.“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”“You dropped the controller.”“I slipped.”Ethan turned to him with complete confidence.“You slipped three times.”“I’m injured,” Caleb said, holding up his shoulder with complete sincerity.Adrian pointed at him.“That is your throwing arm.”“It affects my grip.”Maya laughed from

  • The Heiress's Choice    124. Not your girlfriend

Elena's POVI noticed it before I even made it to the bathroom. The hoodie was still hanging over the back of my chair where I’d left it the night before.Dark grey. Oversized.I picked it up almost without thinking. My fingers lingered on the sleeves before I lifted it closer, burying my face in the soft fabric for just a second.I smiled before I could stop myself. It still smelled like him.I shook my head.Somehow, after everything that had happened over the weekend, he still managed to leave a piece of himself behind. Then I remembered exactly how that happened. Two mornings ago, Caleb had been getting ready to leave my apartment after breakfast. He was moving slower than usual, careful with his shoulder while gathering his things. I was sitting on the edge of my bed scrolling through emails when he reached for his hoodie, pulled it over his head……and started walking toward the door.I looked up.Then blinked.“Caleb.”“Hm?”“…Did you forget something?”He frowned slightly.“D

  • The Heiress's Choice    123. Still here

ELENA'S POVThe first text came at exactly eight forty-seven on Monday morning while I was still in the elevator heading up to my floor. Not from Caleb. From Patricia.Patricia: Good morning, Ms. Sterling. I’ve sent today’s schedule. Mr. Hughes is already waiting outside your office.I frowned, opening the attachment.Seven items. Three marked urgent. It wasn’t even nine yet.By the time the elevator doors opened, I was already scrolling through the list while walking toward my office. That was how my Monday started. It never really slowed down after that.Becoming CEO had been exciting for exactly one day. After that, nobody congratulated me anymore.Around Sterling Global, titles weren’t something people celebrated for very long. They simply came with expectations. People no longer wanted to know how I was settling in.They wanted answers. Results. Decisions. And apparently… they wanted them immediately.Mr. Hughes barely sat down before someone from Finance arrived asking for five

  • The Heiress's Choice    122. Nowhere

Elena’s povSaturday mornings had quickly become my favourite kind of mornings. No alarm. No meetings. No board members waiting outside my office before I’d even had coffee.Just… quiet.I wandered around my apartment in one of Caleb’s hoodies, still debating whether I was in the mood to actually make breakfast or convince myself cereal counted as a proper meal. Then my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. I smiled before I even looked at it. Somehow… I already knew.Caleb.Caleb: Come downstairs. You have exactly two minutes.I blinked.Me: Two minutes from when exactly? He didn’t answer.I sighed, shaking my head as I locked my phone.Of course he wouldn’t. Knowing Caleb, he was probably already outside.I quickly freshened up, changed into a pair of jeans and a simple top, ran a brush through my hair, grabbed my bag and headed downstairs before he decided two minutes had somehow become one. When the elevator opened and I stepped out of the lobby, he was already there, leaning agai

  • The Heiress's Choice    121. Regional Director

Damien's POVMy new assistant met me at the door of my office at exactly eight forty-five with a printed schedule in her hand and a slightly nervous energy she was doing her best to contain."Good morning, Regional Director Blackwell," she said.I nodded once."Good morning."She walked beside me as I moved through the space for the first time properly. My things were still partially unpacked, boxes from the Singapore handover stacked near the window, documents spread across the desk in an organized way."Your first leadership meeting is at ten," she said, reading from her mini pad. “Followed by an onboarding session with the international partnerships team, then a one on one with Mr. Walsh from the board at two, and your new department access codes have already been sent to your phone…”"Thank you," I said, cutting her off.It wasn’t her. Last night, I slept maybe three hours. I just wasn’t in the mood for enthusiasm this morning. "And congratulations again, sir," she added, genuine

Elena's POV Maya's words had been stuck in my head for three days now, playing on repeat every time I tried to focus on anything else.It was Friday now and I sat at my desk, staring at my computer screen, the quarterly reports blurring together into meaningless numbers. My fingers drummed against

Elena’s povIt's been three days since I last saw Damien. I sat in my office pretending to focus on work, but every thought circled back to him.Three days. Elena's POVI watched Damien flee the ballroom and felt absolutely nothing. That should have scared me. That complete absence of feeling for a man I'd once loved enough to give up everything for.But instead, I felt nothing."You're doing amazing," Caleb murmured as I stepped off the stage. He'd be
