Evelyn returned to the manor before dawn fully broke.

She slipped through the side door, reset the lock, draped her coat over her arm, and walked the corridor back to her room. Her steps were light—light enough that the candle flame at the corridor's end didn't flicker. She pushed the door open, stepped inside, closed it behind her, and leaned against the door panel for a moment.

The room was dark. The curtains hadn't been opened; gray-white morning light was barred outside, only a thin strip seeping through the gap at the bottom, lying across the floor. She waited until her breathing slowed, then walked to the bed and sat down. Unfastened her cuffs. Hung her coat over the chair back.

She sat on the bed's edge for a long time. Then she stood and walked to the windowsill.

Two stones sat on the sill, side by side, roughly the same size. She reached out and touched the first one. Coarse surface—like it had been washed by water many times but never smoothed. The second was slightly slicker, darker in color. She pressed her finger against its edge. Didn't pick it up. Just held it there.

She looked at herself in the window glass. It wasn't bright enough yet—the reflection was only a gray-white silhouette, features blurred, the eyes two darker hollows. She couldn't see her own eye color. But she knew. Amber. Among bloodkind, she was the only one.

Impure.

She'd heard that word when she was very young. Back then, she didn't understand why her eyes looked different from everyone else's—all bloodkind eyes were dark red, deep brown, or nearly black. Only hers shone like a small lamp, especially visible in the dark. She'd thought something was wrong with her eyes. She'd even covered one with a strip of cloth to see if it would change to match everyone else's. It didn't. The next day, when she untied it, that eye was still amber.

Later, someone told her that was the mark of a werewolf bite. That scar on her neck—the old bite mark—that was when she connected it to her amber eyes. She wasn't "pure-blooded." She carried the blood of someone who'd been bitten by a wolf. So she could never fully be bloodkind, and she could never fully be anything else.

She stood at the windowsill a little longer, then walked to the bedside. Reached under the pillow and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She unfolded it, smoothed the creases, and looked at it for a while.

A line drawn on the paper. North to south, a bridge across the middle. A circle south of the bridge. A smaller dot north of it. She stared at that dot for a long time, then walked to the desk, picked up the pencil, and added a word beside the dot.

"Eve."

She set the pencil down and looked at the two characters.

That wasn't her full name. Her full name was Evelyn Kleist—"Evelyn" had been chosen by Aldwin, "Kleist" was the family name, neither of them hers. But "Eve" was. Her mother had called her that when she was small. Short, like a very light sigh, the tone not rising but falling, settling between the root of her tongue and the roof of her mouth—like something dropped from a great height into snow.

She'd never let anyone call her "Eve" again.

Until last night. When she said "I'm Eve" through the iron bars, the two syllables had slipped out on their own. She hadn't been able to stop them. By the time she finished speaking, she realized she'd just given her one real name to a werewolf—a werewolf she'd been sent to kill.

She stood at the desk, facing the paper, silent for a long time. Then she folded it back, tucked it into the book, and slid the book back under her pillow.

She pulled the curtains open. Morning light flooded in, covering the windowsill. The two stones caught the light, their edges and angles sharp and clear in the brightness. She looked at them, then turned her gaze outward—toward the overpass. The gray-white bridge stretched across the morning mist like an old bone suspended in the air.

She didn't know why she'd said that name. But she didn't regret it.

She stood at the window, her hand resting on the sill's edge, her fingertip pressed against the stone's surface. She felt the morning chill seeping slowly out of the stone against her fingertip—thin, like something that didn't speak.

In the distance, at the southern end of the overpass, a slow truck drove past. The sound of its wheels, so far away, reached her as nothing but a faint hum. She listened to that sound, then withdrew her hand.

She would go to that subway station again today. Not to confirm anything. Just to go.

She put on her coat. Fastened her cuffs. Checked the hidden pocket—empty. She wasn't bringing a knife today. She only brought the unopened packet of dried flatbread in her pocket, and a small jar of pickled vegetables she'd bought yesterday.

She pushed the side door open and stepped into the gray-white morning light, heading north.

The third evening, Lane left the warehouse alone. He didn't tell Evelyn where he was going. She sat at the low table, unfolding the drawing she'd rescued from the fire barrel again, pressing the singed edges flat with her fingers. He watched her hold it to the oil lamp's light, her gaze moving slowly along the charcoal lines, as if retracing a position already confirmed. He didn't interrupt. He pulled the knife from under the folding bed, fastened it to his waist, and slipped out past the doorway. The wind in the alley was colder than the past few days, pushing from the north, carrying a dry, almost frost-like smell. He walked east along the alley, past the wall where Old Tang stacked the barrels, turned into a narrower passage, then climbed over the low wall at its end and landed on a gravel path behind the night market. He crouched behind the low wall for about ten seconds, confirmed no footsteps, then stood and walked north along the gravel path. The North District direction matche

Brenn woke early. Before dawn, only a faint gray-white light from the distant night market seeped into the alley. Lane heard him move—a soft friction of body against wall. He opened his eyes. Brenn was already sitting up, back against the wall, right arm on his knee, looking down at his wrist. His fingers pressed the skin slowly, then moved away, then pressed again, as if confirming those lines had truly disappeared."The pattern's gone," Lane said.Brenn looked up at him. His pupils showed a lighter gold than yesterday in the dimness, the edge halo almost invisible. "I know. Woke once in the middle of the night. My right arm had a spell of heat, but much lighter than the burning before. Then it faded."Adrian sat up from the folding bed and walked to Brenn, crouching. He didn't speak first, just looked at Brenn's right arm, tracing from shoulder to wrist with his gaze, then pressed a spot near the elbow. When his fingertip pressed down, Brenn didn't flinch, didn't frown. Adrian press

The three days went faster than Lane had expected. The first day, Adrian barely left the low table. He placed Brenn's blood sample next to the sample he'd taken from Lane earlier, comparing the residue patterns on the inner walls of the tubes under the oil lamp's light. He drew several structural diagrams on paper, lines dense and close, some spots stabbed through by his pen tip as if revised too many times. Evelyn sat on the folding bed beside him, spreading the drawing she'd rescued from the fire barrel across her knees, tracing the charcoal lines with her fingertip again and again, as if confirming a detail was still there. Lane sat on the floor against the wall, left hand on his knee, feeling the remnant of the gray line resting quiet beneath his skin, like an old mark confirmed many times over. The second day, Dalen returned from outside with two people. Both young werewolves, thin, shoulders broad but not thick, footsteps light as they walked, as if long accustomed to moving alo

Dalen set out the next evening. He left before the sky had fully darkened; gray-blue light seeped in from the alley entrance, laying a pale cold tone across the warehouse floor. Lane stood by the doorway, watching him pull on a dark coat, fasten the cuffs, raise the collar to cover his jaw. Dalen carried nothing—no cloth bag, no weapon, only a folded note in his pocket, which Lane had him take. The note had just a few words, dictated by Old Tang, copied in pencil by Dalen: Rain tonight, back door open, take the north passage."When you get to the dungeon, don't go through the iron door. Wait outside the passage. If Brenn can walk, let him come out on his own. If he can't walk, go in and help him out, but don't touch the chain." Lane's voice was level, like he was stating something already thought through. "There's a blood seal on the chain, the coating's still there. If your hand touches it directly, it might trigger the sensing."Dalen put the note in his inner pocket, pressed it wit

Before three in the afternoon, Lane left the warehouse alone. He walked east along the alley, past the wall where Old Tang stacked the barrels, turned into a narrower passage. At the passage's end was a small open area enclosed by walls on three sides, a battered iron sheet overhead; rain dripped through its gaps, striking the ground in dark dots. Lane stopped in the center of the open area, facing the entrance, hands at his sides. He carried no knife. The knife was under the folding bed in the warehouse, covered by his coat.Dalen arrived before the three o'clock bell. He entered from the passage mouth, footsteps lighter than last time, landing with steady rhythm. He wore a dark brown old coat today, collar buttoned to the top, covering his jaw. His face in the shadow beneath the iron sheet looked thinner than last time, cheekbones sharper than Lane remembered. He stopped about five paces from Lane, his gaze resting on Lane for a moment, then dropping to his empty hands."You didn't

Evelyn returned just before dawn. Two soft taps came from outside the doorway, evenly spaced, like knuckles rapping twice against the door panel. Lane was already awake, sitting on the edge of the bed. He didn't move when he heard the taps, waited until the second one finished, then stood and walked to the doorway. Evelyn came from the direction of the alley entrance, footsteps light, turning sideways as she crossed the threshold, shoulder brushing the door frame, then stepping inside. She carried nothing; her collar was up, covering her jaw. She paused in front of him, then walked to her own folding bed and sat down."Where did you go?" he asked."Outside. Walked around.""How long?""Don't know. I was still there when the night market closed."He looked at her. Her fingers rested on her knees, not clenched, not folded together. She had unbuttoned one button of her coat, revealing a small strip of skin at the collar's inner edge; the old bite mark on her neck showed a faint outline i
