Back home after my shift at Royale, Nora wouldn’t stop pacingin her apartment. She moved back and forth across the tiny living room, her hands on her hips, her hair bouncing with every step while I sat down on the couch, still in my work clothes.
“Sam,” she said for the hundredth time, “you are not spending another night crying over your problems.”
“I won’t be crying,” I muttered.
She shot me a look. “Well, your eyes suggests otherwise.”
I sighed and rubbed my face. My body tired from work. My mind also ached from everything else.
“I’m tired, Nora.”
“Tired isn’t the same as giving up, my friend,” she said, then smiled slowly. “Besides, I have a great idea for you.”
That made mea little nervous, knowing Nora well. “Really? And what idea is that?”
“So… there’s this underground party tonight…” I started but wasn’t allowed to finish…
“Oh please, Nora!” I sighed, already aware of what she was driving at.
“It’s going to be fun, I swear!” she said excitedly, “An underground masked party. Just think about the anonymity of it, plus… free drinks, loud music, no stress or worries for a few good hours. We both know you could use some of that.”
I frowned. “But… doesn’t underground even sounds illegal to you?”
She laughed. “Relax. It’s just a hidden bar club thing. Everyone goes to masked parties, Sam. It’s fun in a mysterious way.”
“I don’t party, remember?” I said to her.
“Well, you don’t live enough either,” she shot back harshly. “Sam, you’ve been working and crying nonstop. You need one night to breathe.”
I looked away, worried that if Nora kept talking, she would succeed in convincing me to attend the party. She had that tendency to talk someone into doing something she believed was great for them.
But as I sat there listening to Nora’s one million reasons why I should go to the party, something she mentioned got to me… I hadn’t truly been living. Just surviving. And the thought that my best friend was trying to get me to do former felt like the sweetest thing ever.
But Clara’s pale face flashed in my head. And the rush of emotions tied to all my worries came rushing back, and I felt the melancholy again.
“I really don’t feel like pretending I’m okay, Nora,” I whispered.
Nora didn’t say another word for a few more seconds. She just sat beside me and took my hands in hers.
“Look, you don’t have to pretend,” she said softly. “Just forgetabout everything for a few hours, and I promise the weight would feel a little less heavier.”
Silence stretched between us as I thought about the idea. If Nora was right about anything… she was always right about everything…. It was that I needed to lighten the weight on my shoulders.
Finally, I sighed. “Fine,” I said quietly. “Just tonight.”
She squealed happily beside me and jumped up, her excitement as visible as a child’s receiving a favorite present.
Apparently, she carried the excitement for the both of us. But Iwas unsure of just everything about going with Nora to an underground masked party.
The underground bar was nothing like I had imagined in my head. It was hidden beneath an old building downtown of Oceandale, and the place boomed with music so loud I felt it in my chest.
Flashes of light shone across the dark room, where people danced everywhere… all wearing masks that covered most of their faces.
It felt like stepping into another different world entirely. Nora handed me a simple silver mask that covered my eyes when I held it up.
“You’re supposed to put it on,” she said sarcastically. “Tonight, you’re not Samantha. Just a girl having fun.”
I slipped it on nervously, thinking about what she said. It was impossible to recognize anyone here with these on, I thought. And the thought of that seemed like a little consolation to me as we mingled with the crowd.
The music continued to boom, vibrating across my entire body. It felt as if the very room it self was a giant speaker.
And the crowd seemed to love it, they moved like waves with the sound of the music. For a moment, I felt like I wasn’t going to suffocate, and I wanted to run out.
But then Nora dragged me toward the bar. “Two shots!” she yelled.
I shook my head. “Nora, I…”
“You need to loosen up a little, sis!” She said, shoving one glass into my hand.
I hesitated. But then she urged on, lifting the glass to my mouth. I stared at the liquid dancing in the glass, then without further thought, I swallowed it.
The alcohol burned all the way down my throat and I coughed.
Nora laughed. “That’s the spirit!”
A second drink followed. Then another. And soon, the tight feeling in my chest began to loosen. The world blurred just a little and all the pain suddenly seemed numb.
Before I knew it, time passed and the music had started to go down. Suddenly, Nora appeared at my side as I danced terribly with a total stranger.
“Hey, wanna play a game?” she whispered in my ear.
I squinted at her. “What kind of game?”
“A dare game,” she said. “Everyone here’s doing it.”
I glanced around and noticed groups of people laughing wildly, whispering things to themselves and even occasionallyscreaming.
I felt my stomach turn. I couldn’t tell if it was the alcohol or the realization of what I was really doing.
“Nora, I think I’m drunk.”
“Exactly,” she answered proudly.
Before I could stop her, she grabbed a random girl nearby and whispered something to her. The girl giggled and pointed across the room.
Nora followed her finger, then turned back to me with wide eyes. “Ohhh Sam.”
“What?” I slurred.
“You see that guy by the far bar?”
I turned slowly.
And that’s when I saw him.
He stood tall apart from the crowd, wearing a dark mask that covered the upper half of his face. Even in the dim lights, he looked hot. If not dangerous.
My heart skipped a beat as I stared at the man from across the room. Something about him seemed to glue my gaze to him as I couldn’t take my eyes off him.
“That’s your dare,” I heard Nora said behind me. “Take him home.” She said with a silly grin on her face.
My mouth dropped open. “What?! No!”
“Come on, girl,” she said. “One night remember? It’s probably even going to be romantic, who know”
“It’s crazy!” I said to her, even though the idea was starting to build in me.
“Isn’t that the point?” The girl Nora had stopped chimed.
I shook my head, laughing nervously. “Nora, I don’t even know who he is.”
“You don’t need to. Just go with the flow, okay?”
I looked back towards him, then shook my head, “I can’t,” I whispered.
“Just go talk to him,” she said. “If you don’t like it, walk awaythen.”
I swallowed. The feeling of the too much alcohol in my system making the idea more enticing by the second.
Knowing Nora could talk anyone into doing anything, and that she wouldn’t stop until I walked over, I sighed heavily and took another drink.
“Fine,” I said breathlessly as I gulped the liquor down now withacquired ease. “I’ll go talk to him.”
Nora squealed quietly.
I took one lousy step and everything else became a blur. And before I knew it, I was walking through the crowd with the handsome stranger, my hand in his as we made our way out of the bar.
Sam’s POVNora’s panicked voice continued from the other end of the line.“And…” Nora’s voice dropped further into a terrified whisper, “if I’m not seeing things, Sam, I think one of them is that ridiculously handsome friend of Riven’s.”I blinked.“Karl?”“Yes, Karl! That’s him!”I almost laughed out from relief. Riven was already watching me carefully, trying to determine what was happening.I rubbed my forehead.“Nora, it’s okay.”“No, it’s is not okay! They’ve been here for the past one hour. Oh my God, I’m calling the police!”“Stop. It’s actually okay.”“What? Why?” she inquired with an almost annoyed voice.I smiled despite the tightness I felt in my chest.“The men are there because Riven sent them.”There was a cold silence from the phone. Then Nora spoke.“What?”I explained everything to her quickly. My earlier attack, how Riven had arrived just in time to the rescue… not getting into the details though… and the security he has ordered for our protection.I also told her h
Sam’s POVThe kiss left me breathless. For a few precious moments, everything else had disappeared, all of it fading behind the warmth of Riven’s touch. When we finally pulled apart, his forehead rested against mine. I could feel his breath against my skin, his heartbeat too. I could feel the strange connection between us stronger than ever.Yet despite everything, one terrifying thought popped back into my mind. I broke the kiss instantly, then pulled away.“Riven?”His eyes immediately found mine.“Hm?”My fingers tightened around his shirt I was still holding.“Am I going to die?”The words came out quieter than I’d intended, and I noticed the effect they had on him was immediate. His entire expression changed quickly, the softness disappearing… not out of anger, but because he looked genuinely disturbed by my question.“Samantha...”But I cut him off.“I’m sorry I can’t help but think that. I mean, I was attacked today.”The memory sent a shiver through me.“Those wolves wanted me
Sam’s POVAs I tried to lean closer to know what was really going on in the room, the study door suddenly swung open. I nearly jumped out of my skin.My heart immediately started pounding as all three men turned toward me. Great… so much for sneaking around unnoticed. For a brief second, nobody said anything, and I just stood frozen there in the doorway. Caught. My gaze then instinctively found Riven’s.I noticed how a frown sat on his face from whatever argument had been happening before I interrupted them. For one terrifying moment, I thought he might actually be angry with me.Then he smiled at me and just like that, the tension disappeared. The hard look in his eyes softened almost immediately. The change wasn’t so obvious that only I seemed to notice it.Unfortunately, not everyone in the room looked nearly as happy to see me. The man standing closest to the door was looking at me. Not just looking at me, but really staring. And the look in his eyes made me uncomfortable. There w
Riven’s POVThe images of wolves chasing Samantha through that narrow street haunted me, along with the thought that if I had arrived a minute later…I took a deep breath in the attempt to wave the thoughts away. Every time I thought about it, my wolf stirred with rage within. My hands clenched into fists as I listened to the two men there in the study with me talked. One of them said something I didn’t catch, and then there was silence.I looked up and both Ivan and Karl were staring at me, clearly waiting for my response. But I ignored whatever it was they had been saying and lifted myself from the desk.“I’m going to make Simon regret ever coming after her.” I said, my jaws tightening.Simon Hunter had spent years trying to catch up to my influence in the basketball game. And also being the Alpha of Crimson pack, he has always looked to disrupt Valora’s dominance of Oceandale city.Mostly failing in both intentions, the man had grown bitter and vengeful over the years. And since he
Sam’s POVI didn’t let go of Riven immediately. Even after the danger was gone… after the street had fallen silent… after the unexpected kiss.My hands remained clutching his shirt as my body struggled to recover from the terror of what he had just saved me from. Those men… No. Those animals. They had wanted me dead. That realization made my stomach turn with fear.Riven’s arms remained around me, strong and protective.Eventually, I pulled back enough to look at him. His eyes were now completely back to normal, not the other part of him that had just torn the men apart.“Come on. We’re leaving.” He said firmly.“What?” I asked, confused at the urgency in his voice.“You’re coming with me.”I blinked.“Why? Are more of those things coming after me?”“I’m guessing so. You’re not safe on the streets.”I thought about that for a second and my panic instantly returned as I thought of Clara alone in the hospital. What if the men were sent when I was with her. What if… what if she’s also in
Sam’s POVA werewolf. The word sounded ridiculous even inside my own head. Every time I thought about it, my logical mind immediately rejected it.Then I would remember his eyes, the way it glowed brightly. Slowly, as I thought of everything, it didn’t seem ridiculous anymore. It turned terrifying.Part of me had wanted to tell Nora when I got back home and she couldn’t stop talking about her day. Scratch that actually… I desperately wanted to tell her.I could already imagine her reaction. She would either think I had completely lost my mind or demand to meet Riven immediately and ask him a thousand questions. The thought almost made me laugh. But every time I opened my mouth, I didn’t know how to begin.I mean, how exactly was I supposed to explain this?“Hey Nora, remember the billionaire athlete I’ve fallen in love with? Turns out he’s actually a werewolf.”Yeah. That would go over well.I didn’t get much sleep that night. Again. But unlike the previous night, it wasn’t because I
Sam’s POV I pushed my cleaning cart down the long hallway of Royale Lodge. It was the same routine for me every day, although my mind was never truly here. It was always somewhere else.Somewhere emotional and sad.Two weeks ago, Amelia had stood in the doorway with her arms crossed, her lips twist
Sam’s POV Hours after that beautiful, but much dreaded night I had spent with a total stranger, I tried so much to return to my usual life. The idea of forgetting about my current life conditions and pretending I was someone else hadn’t worked out so well after all. It felt like I had just briefly

Sam’s POV The air outside was cold when we stepped out of the bar, but his hand around mine warmed me a bit.His grip was strong and firm. And I didn’t even question him about where we were going, I just let him lead me on.My head spun from the alcohol, but there was something else… something dee
