CHAPTER SIX
A double-edged sword
Star crouched low behind a fallen tree trunk at the tree line and waited for Stone’s signal, he peeked from behind a tree and motioned for her to follow him, together they broke into a sprint across the short clearing between the trees and the first house on the southeast border of the pack.
They weaved through the houses, ducking below windows where families gathered around a television or pups were being put to bed. Star made a point to count the number of people in each household, scratching the number onto her forearm for reference.

Feeding passion fuels the fireStar’s body ached, her skin burned like fire danced along her back. The black cotton shirt she wore did nothing to ease the blows, instead, the shreds of material that lodged itself in the cuts that formed on her skin pained her more. She was free of the confines of the chair and ropes, but the friction from the nylon bruised her wrists leaving a lasting image in her mind.The sound of the metal door swinging open alerted her to the presence of another person, dragging her from her pain-induced haze. Her mind was on high alert even though her body was hard to move, if they planned on hurting her again, she would again put up a fight.Star watched Maximus tense carefully as he approached her and flinched when he reached out to her.

Avenging deathEveryone was imposition well before the sky turned dark, there was no mention of the time of the attack and Star found herself growing worried, her only form of communication with Maximus was over the phone and she didn’t want to speak aloud in front of his pack members and worry them unnecessarily, so instead she sent him a text message.Star: I have a bad feeling about this, something tells me they’re planning theattack for the early morning. “The wolves are more vigilant at night,”those are Stone’s exact words.Maximus: If we keep everyone up all night, they will be fighting fatigue as well.
