Mag-log inEvelyn's Point of View
It was an absurd thing to be jealous of. But the logic of an obsessive man was beyond me. "Hold still. I'll bandage it." I pulled his hand toward me, too tired to argue. Wrapping it was really for my own peace of mind. When I finished and looked up, Sebastian was watching me, his gaze so intent that my face warmed. "What are you staring at?" He licked the corner of his lip. "I'm hungry." I was fairly sure we meant different things by that, so I played dumb. "Me too. Let's eat." After all my dawdling, the noodles had congealed into a single lump, and I couldn't make myself touch mine. Sebastian didn't seem to mind at all. He ate with such relish you'd think it was a five-star banquet, and both bowls vanished in minutes. Then his eyes settled on me again, darker than before. After the last two times, I knew that look. I yawned theatrically and stood. "I'm so sleepy." I could feel him watching the stiff line of my back, and I heard him laugh softly. I walked faster, wishing I had longer legs. I didn't. He caught up easily, hooked an arm around my waist, and dropped backward onto the couch, taking me with him. His body broke my fall, so it didn't hurt, but I yelped anyway. In the scramble, my hand landed on something hot and hard, and I yelped again and half crawled, half rolled out of his arms. I was nearly across the rug when I felt a tug on my nightgown. I glanced back. He had a fistful of the fabric and a look in his eyes that made my stomach flip. "I don't want to," I whispered, dropping to the floor. If it happened again, I really would die. Sebastian let out a long breath and gathered me back against his chest, murmuring like I was a frightened child. "Easy. Stop wriggling." I froze, spine straight as a board, afraid to move. He tilted my chin up and kissed me, and I felt the restlessness coil in him again. But something in my face must have reached him. His jaw tightened. His arms loosened. Whatever he had meant to do, he didn't. "Not tonight," he said quietly. "I'm letting you off." Tonight. The word hung there. Was it a promise or a warning? The tears came before I could stop them, one after another. I had never in my life been pushed around like this, never been so frightened and so powerless at the same time. I was still on the rug, tears running into my hair, when his thumb found my cheek and brushed them away. It was careful and slow, and it frightened me more than roughness would have. "Evie." His voice was low and rough. "Look at me." I didn't want to. I turned my face toward the room instead, away from him, and the shapes in the dark slid into focus. The sofa. The wool rug scratching at my shoulders. The hearth, with a few embers still glowing orange behind the grate. My breath caught. I had seen this before. The same rough weave under my back, the same low red light. I had dreamed a room exactly like this one, and a man whose face I could never quite bring into focus. I had woken up with my cheeks burning and told myself it was nothing. I turned my head slowly and looked at him. His jaw, his dark eyes, the steadiness of his gaze. Something in my memory clicked into place, and the blurred face in my dream settled over his like a lens sliding home. It was him. I could almost feel the calloused fingertips tracing my cheek, hear him saying my name in the dark. Evelyn Hart. "No," I whispered. He didn't ask what I meant. He just watched me, and I saw the moment he understood that I'd understood. "You remember now," he said quietly. "How you slept with me." My heart slammed against my ribs. That was why he'd said it on our wedding night. That was why there'd been no blood on the sheets. The dream had never been a dream. I shook my head. I didn't want it to be true. But the room kept the memory like a photograph, and I couldn't unsee it. The shock hit all at once, on top of the exhaustion and the fear, and the edges of the room went gray. The last thing I felt was his arms closing around me, and the last thing I heard was my own name. When I woke, it was still dark. I lay perfectly still, my eyes open, listening to the quiet. I was in the big bed again, the blanket tucked up around my shoulders. Sebastian's breathing, slow and even, came from beside me, though this time I didn't trust it for a second. The memories came back in order, one by one, and I made myself look at each of them. I had lost my virginity to this man before I ever walked down an aisle. Then, on the day of my wedding, I'd been carried off to be his bride. And Julian, who had promised me one life and one love, had stood in a white suit in a ballroom while I was declared dead. Chesca, my best friend since we were girls, had been at his side. Sebastian said they had planned it together. He said it might not have been the first time they'd tried to get rid of me. I wanted to believe it was a lie. But the newspaper was real, and so was the engagement announcement, and so was the silence from the man who had sworn he would always find me. A chill started in my chest and spread until my fingers went numb under the blanket. I had never been so cold, or so alone.Evelyn’s Point of View I frowned. My jaw hurt so badly it felt close to dislocating, and I forced the words out. "Why... do you hate Julian... so much?""He deserves to die." Sebastian's voice was low, shaking with anger he couldn't quite hold down.I could hear his rage seeping through my bones."How do I know Lydia wasn't ordered by you to slander Julian?" I tilted my head back to look at him, and my suspicion was plain on my face.He let go of my chin. His eyes narrowed, and something that looked like pain moved beneath the surface. "That's what you think of me?"I stepped back. "What should I think? If Julian, my own fiancé, could hurt me, why should I trust a man I've known for a few days?"He frowned. From where I stood, it was the most natural thought in the world.I braced myself, sure he was about to explode. Instead, he laughed."Good. That's my woman. Sharp." His thumb traced my lips, and he looked thoroughly pleased. "I'll give you the chance to learn for yourself who you
Evelyn's Point of View I could picture it perfectly. If not for Sebastian, that swollen, rotting body out there in the surf would be me."What is going on?" My eyes were wide, my voice tight with panic. His expression was mild, his dark eyes blinking lazily, a wicked little smile on that handsome face. "Let me tell you a secret. I put the body there.""You did?" I nearly leapt out of my seat. "Why?""A decoy." He didn't hide it at all. "Someone decided you were in the way. They wanted you to quietly 'die of illness.' So I gave them an Evelyn Hart whose body washes up from the sea."My mind began to race. The newspaper said I'd died of an illness. Now Sebastian had planted a body to muddy the water, which meant whoever was behind it would have to move, and in moving, show themselves. Then a more important question struck me. "Who is she? The woman in the water?"He shrugged, entirely unbothered. "Bought. Who knows.""..."I stared at him. Wasn't buying corpses illegal? Surely that was
Evelyn's Point of View "Julian... stop it, I'm answering your phone." Chesca's voice was low and breathless, sweet enough to drip. "If you don't say something, I'm hanging up.""Ah... again? I'm so tired..." The sounds on the line broke apart, and then the call went dead.I gripped the phone so hard my knuckles hurt. My eyes burned, and I bit my lip until I tasted blood, refusing to let the tears fall.Sebastian's mouth brushed my earlobe. "Bad timing, it seems."I fell apart. The phone hit the floor, and I screamed at him through sobs. "You knew! You knew the whole time, didn't you?"He had known Julian was in bed with Chesca. He'd given me that chance only so I could watch myself be humiliated."I warned you. You didn't believe me." His voice was low, and it was cruel in its calm."It was you. You set this up!" I shook my head and hit his chest again and again, with everything I had."I set it up?" Sebastian laughed coldly, and his anger rose. "Did I put Julian in her bed? Did I ma
Evelyn's Point of View Of course I remembered.Half a month ago, Lydia had thrown her birthday party in a private suite at the Champs Hotel, and half the city's socialites and heirs had come. As her best friend, I had helped Chesca plan the whole thing."You drank something that night," Lydia pressed. "Do you remember?"I frowned, and the memory came back piece by piece. "The cocktail."If I remembered right, Julian was the one who had poured it for me.Chesca, Lydia, and I had each had one. Soon afterward my limbs went heavy and weak, and Chesca had teased me about being a lightweight. Then Lydia had volunteered to take me upstairs to rest.So I wasn't a lightweight. I had already been drugged."I was terrified, and I'd had too much to drink myself," Lydia said. "I got confused about the floor and took you to Mr. Blackwood's room by mistake." She started kowtowing again. "Evie, please believe me. I never meant to hurt you."I stared at her. "Then tell me. If you hadn't made that mis
Evelyn’s Point of View In the villa's great hall, Winston stood to one side with his hands folded. The kindly old butler was gone, and his lined face looked cold and hard.A woman lay in a heap at his feet. Her ash-brown hair was matted and filthy and hid her face. Her clothes had been torn to ribbons, and blood seeped through the shreds.I clutched Sebastian's shirt without thinking and shrank against him in fear."Don't be afraid." Sebastian stroked my shoulder, soothing the trembling rabbit in his arms.He carried me to the sofa and settled me across his lap, the motion so natural and intimate that I couldn't find a way to object.I looked at the woman on the floor. It took me a long time to recognize her. "Lydia?!"I was so shocked my eyes went round.Half a month ago, this woman had been a dazzling beauty, the most sought-after socialite in the city. How was she here? Had Sebastian taken her?Barely conscious, Lydia stirred. Her unfocused eyes sharpened a little when they landed
Evelyn's Point of View I couldn't stop crying. The questions had stopped coming, but they were still echoing in my head, and my breath kept hitching until I thought I might black out. Then the door slammed open. The bang made me flinch hard. I curled tighter into the chair."Out." Sebastian's voice was low and savage, and when I peeked up, his eyes were red as blood. The single word seemed to press the air flat. The doctors scrambled for the door, practically tripping over each other.Through the gap, I caught Winston's voice, pleading and breathless. "Sir, she's too frail, she can't take any more." Then the door shut, and it was just the two of us.Sebastian crossed the room in three strides. "Evie," he said, softly now.I shook harder and tried to make myself smaller. Curling up was pure instinct, the kind no one ever outgrows."Don't be afraid." He pulled me into his arms and patted my back in slow, steady strokes. He sounded hurt, and a little helpless. "I watched all of it on th
