I turned my head and looked at Sebastian. His eyes were closed, his breathing slow and even. He's asleep. Which means... this is my chance. I forced myself upright and slid out from under the reach of his arm, inch by careful inch. The moment my feet touched the floor, my legs buckled, weak and sore, and I caught the bedpost to keep from falling. My nightgown was in shreds somewhere on the floor, so I frowned, picked up Sebastian's shirt, and pulled it on. It hung to my knees. I crept toward the door. "Don't go." I was almost at the handle when the low command came from behind me. My soul nearly left my body. My heart stopped, and I didn't dare breathe. I looked back, terrified. He hadn't moved. His eyes were still shut, his face half buried in the pillow. He was talking in his sleep. Thank God. I pressed a hand to my chest and let out a shaky breath. I had just lifted my foot again when a murmur drifted across the room, rough and hurt and still stubbornly commanding. "Evie... don't go. I won't let you go... I love you." My heart shuddered, and some nameless feeling rose in my chest. Then I shook it off. A man like that? If he really loved me, it would only be another way of hurting me. I had no idea what I'd done to deserve being tangled up with someone so frightening. I couldn't drive. I had no phone to call for help. All I could do was walk, as far as my legs would carry me. Outside, I realized the house stood alone at the top of a mountain. Dark forest lined both sides of the road, and it felt as if a hundred predators waited in the black, ready to leap out and tear me apart. I was scared. But then I thought of the man in that house, and even the worst wild animal seemed friendlier than he was. The night wind cut through me. I pulled the oversized shirt tighter and walked faster. I never looked behind me, I walked until my feet were bleeding and my head was spinning. The road tilted. The trees blurred. My knees gave out, and the ground rushed up to meet me. The last thing I felt was the heat of my own skin, and then a pair of arms that I somehow already knew. Then everything went black. When I finally opened my eyes, everything was white. The ceiling, the walls, the sheets. The air smelled of disinfectant. It took me a moment to understand: a hospital. Did someone find me and bring me here? I tried to sit up. The room went black and tilted sideways, and I pitched toward the floor. I never hit it. A pair of strong arms caught me, steady and fast, and held me close. Through the haze I caught the sound of a phone clattering onto a balcony table, and a voice that was not quite steady. "Evie." It was Sebastian. And his hands, I realized, were shaking. My lips had gone pale, and a high ringing filled my ears. It felt as if something heavy were sitting on my chest. I opened my mouth to breathe, but like a fish flung onto the shore, I got nothing. “Doctor!” Sebastian’s roar cracked across the room. “Where is the doctor?” Winston burst in with a physician at his heels, then stopped short. Through the blur, I saw the old man stare at his master as if he were seeing a stranger. Sebastian’s eyes were bloodshot, wild as a cornered animal’s. “Look at her. If anything happens to her, I’ll have your whole family buried with her.” There was nothing left of his usual calm. The doctor didn’t dare tremble. He hurried over and examined me. “Mr. Blackwood, your wife is fine. She stood up too fast, and it caused temporary dizziness. It will pass.” Sebastian didn’t seem to hear. His arms stayed locked around me, and they were shaking. “Out,” he said at last, rough and quiet. “Wait outside.” The doctor fled as if pardoned. Winston sighed softly and slipped out after him. Then Sebastian pressed his face into my hair, and he spoke so low I almost thought I’d imagined it. “Three years ago, I held you like this. I felt you go cold in my arms, a little at a time, until you stopped breathing. I couldn’t do anything. Nothing.” His voice scraped. “I still don’t know how you came back, or why you did it. I only know I can’t let go. Not now. Not ever.” His hand moved slowly down my back, as though he needed to confirm I was solid. “I hate it,” he muttered. “Having you close enough to touch and still feeling like you’ll vanish. I want you where I can see you. Crying, laughing, I don’t care. Even doing nothing. As long as you’re next to me, I feel...” He broke off. “Alive. I feel alive.” Three years ago? What is he talking about? The thought slid away, too heavy to hold. My head was swimming. “Julian,” I whispered, my voice a thread, like a kitten’s. “I don’t feel well.” His whole body tensed. But he didn’t snap or let go. “Where does it hurt?” he asked, steady and urgent, as if the name hadn’t touched him. “Everywhere.” I scrunched up my face. I was dizzy and nauseous, and my heart gave small, sharp twinges. “It’ll ease soon.” He patted my back in slow strokes, and his voice was so gentle that every word sounded dipped in honey. I curled against him like a cat as the pressure in my chest loosened. I opened my eyes. “Julian, I...” The face above me was not Julian’s. I nearly leapt out of his arms. Sebastian. I’d been caught again. His grip tightened. “You’re not well yet. Don’t be stubborn.” I could have kicked myself. I’d been so feverish that I’d mistaken this wolf for gentle, refined Julian. “What... what are you going to do?” I shook all over, and I couldn’t hide how afraid I was. I saw the hurt flash across his face, there and gone. His voice softened. “Get well, and I promise I won’t do anything.”Evelyn’s Point of View I frowned. My jaw hurt so badly it felt close to dislocating, and I forced the words out. "Why... do you hate Julian... so much?""He deserves to die." Sebastian's voice was low, shaking with anger he couldn't quite hold down.I could hear his rage seeping through my bones."How do I know Lydia wasn't ordered by you to slander Julian?" I tilted my head back to look at him, and my suspicion was plain on my face.He let go of my chin. His eyes narrowed, and something that looked like pain moved beneath the surface. "That's what you think of me?"I stepped back. "What should I think? If Julian, my own fiancé, could hurt me, why should I trust a man I've known for a few days?"He frowned. From where I stood, it was the most natural thought in the world.I braced myself, sure he was about to explode. Instead, he laughed."Good. That's my woman. Sharp." His thumb traced my lips, and he looked thoroughly pleased. "I'll give you the chance to learn for yourself who you
Evelyn's Point of View I could picture it perfectly. If not for Sebastian, that swollen, rotting body out there in the surf would be me."What is going on?" My eyes were wide, my voice tight with panic. His expression was mild, his dark eyes blinking lazily, a wicked little smile on that handsome face. "Let me tell you a secret. I put the body there.""You did?" I nearly leapt out of my seat. "Why?""A decoy." He didn't hide it at all. "Someone decided you were in the way. They wanted you to quietly 'die of illness.' So I gave them an Evelyn Hart whose body washes up from the sea."My mind began to race. The newspaper said I'd died of an illness. Now Sebastian had planted a body to muddy the water, which meant whoever was behind it would have to move, and in moving, show themselves. Then a more important question struck me. "Who is she? The woman in the water?"He shrugged, entirely unbothered. "Bought. Who knows.""..."I stared at him. Wasn't buying corpses illegal? Surely that was
Evelyn's Point of View "Julian... stop it, I'm answering your phone." Chesca's voice was low and breathless, sweet enough to drip. "If you don't say something, I'm hanging up.""Ah... again? I'm so tired..." The sounds on the line broke apart, and then the call went dead.I gripped the phone so hard my knuckles hurt. My eyes burned, and I bit my lip until I tasted blood, refusing to let the tears fall.Sebastian's mouth brushed my earlobe. "Bad timing, it seems."I fell apart. The phone hit the floor, and I screamed at him through sobs. "You knew! You knew the whole time, didn't you?"He had known Julian was in bed with Chesca. He'd given me that chance only so I could watch myself be humiliated."I warned you. You didn't believe me." His voice was low, and it was cruel in its calm."It was you. You set this up!" I shook my head and hit his chest again and again, with everything I had."I set it up?" Sebastian laughed coldly, and his anger rose. "Did I put Julian in her bed? Did I ma
Evelyn's Point of View Of course I remembered.Half a month ago, Lydia had thrown her birthday party in a private suite at the Champs Hotel, and half the city's socialites and heirs had come. As her best friend, I had helped Chesca plan the whole thing."You drank something that night," Lydia pressed. "Do you remember?"I frowned, and the memory came back piece by piece. "The cocktail."If I remembered right, Julian was the one who had poured it for me.Chesca, Lydia, and I had each had one. Soon afterward my limbs went heavy and weak, and Chesca had teased me about being a lightweight. Then Lydia had volunteered to take me upstairs to rest.So I wasn't a lightweight. I had already been drugged."I was terrified, and I'd had too much to drink myself," Lydia said. "I got confused about the floor and took you to Mr. Blackwood's room by mistake." She started kowtowing again. "Evie, please believe me. I never meant to hurt you."I stared at her. "Then tell me. If you hadn't made that mis
Evelyn’s Point of View In the villa's great hall, Winston stood to one side with his hands folded. The kindly old butler was gone, and his lined face looked cold and hard.A woman lay in a heap at his feet. Her ash-brown hair was matted and filthy and hid her face. Her clothes had been torn to ribbons, and blood seeped through the shreds.I clutched Sebastian's shirt without thinking and shrank against him in fear."Don't be afraid." Sebastian stroked my shoulder, soothing the trembling rabbit in his arms.He carried me to the sofa and settled me across his lap, the motion so natural and intimate that I couldn't find a way to object.I looked at the woman on the floor. It took me a long time to recognize her. "Lydia?!"I was so shocked my eyes went round.Half a month ago, this woman had been a dazzling beauty, the most sought-after socialite in the city. How was she here? Had Sebastian taken her?Barely conscious, Lydia stirred. Her unfocused eyes sharpened a little when they landed
Evelyn's Point of View I couldn't stop crying. The questions had stopped coming, but they were still echoing in my head, and my breath kept hitching until I thought I might black out. Then the door slammed open. The bang made me flinch hard. I curled tighter into the chair."Out." Sebastian's voice was low and savage, and when I peeked up, his eyes were red as blood. The single word seemed to press the air flat. The doctors scrambled for the door, practically tripping over each other.Through the gap, I caught Winston's voice, pleading and breathless. "Sir, she's too frail, she can't take any more." Then the door shut, and it was just the two of us.Sebastian crossed the room in three strides. "Evie," he said, softly now.I shook harder and tried to make myself smaller. Curling up was pure instinct, the kind no one ever outgrows."Don't be afraid." He pulled me into his arms and patted my back in slow, steady strokes. He sounded hurt, and a little helpless. "I watched all of it on th
