I reach the cottage as the sun is barely up, the dirt path already warming where early light slants through the woods. I can hear the blue jays in the sycamore above the porch click and gossip, indifferent to my arrival. My ancient hands hesitate on the fresh-painted railing: this is not the home of a timid child anymore, but the dwelling of a woman and her mate, self-determined and fiercely so. I pause a half-breath, then knock.

    JaxAfter Raven was given congratulatory hugs and high fives from everyone who had come to watch her assessment, we left the training center to head back home. She seemed a little off when we passed by the few lingering groups of warriors at the training grounds, but when I asked her about it she said it was nothing. I know her better than anyone and I know it wasn’t nothing, but I also know that she’s not going to talk about it if she didn’t want to. So I decided to wait.     Raven The next morning, when I get to the training center, I can smell Edward, Rion and Dorian inside. The worries about my nightmare are gone and I’m excited to choose my hunt weapon. I quickly walk inside, setting my water bottle off to the side and start warming up like normal. After a few minutes the three of them come out from another room. I smile and greet them, “Good morning gentlemen.” They all give me their own version of a light smirk. They know why I’m excited. “Raven, we know you’re excited. But there’s just a little bit of hunter history you need to learn before we get started.” Edward tells me as he walks closer to where I am. I narrow my focus and don’t feel anything negative from them.
