Rion

I reach the cottage as the sun is barely up, the dirt path already warming where early light slants through the woods. I can hear the blue jays in the sycamore above the porch click and gossip, indifferent to my arrival. My ancient hands hesitate on the fresh-painted railing: this is not the home of a timid child anymore, but the dwelling of a woman and her mate, self-determined and fiercely so. I pause a half-breath, then knock.

  • The Hybrid Huntress   Chapter 44

JaxI can feel her fear quickly being replaced by relief, but not all of it. “Do you remember what this nightmare was about?” I ask her.“This nightmare? Is this not the first time this has happened?” My dad asks.“No. Last week she had a nightmare, but she wasn’t crying or screaming like this and after a few minutes she woke up.”I explain how last time was different and then I see Colleen’s face grow into a mask of worry.“What is it? How did you wake her up?” I demand. I wish I could sound nicer, but right now I’m desperate for an answer.“This wasn’t my doing. I’m honestly not sure that I would have a way to wake her if this happened again. She woke up on her own.”Raven is shaking in my arms. It’s gutting me to feel how scared she is. When she speaks, her voice is quiet and sounds very weak. “I feel warm.”“Shit. Her heat is starting again. We need to leave.” Alpha Avery says.My dad puts his hand on my shoulder, “Son, if she remembers anything about the dream, let us know. Oth

  • The Hybrid Huntress   Chapter 43

JaxAfter Raven was given congratulatory hugs and high fives from everyone who had come to watch her assessment, we left the training center to head back home. She seemed a little off when we passed by the few lingering groups of warriors at the training grounds, but when I asked her about it she said it was nothing. I know her better than anyone and I know it wasn’t nothing, but I also know that she’s not going to talk about it if she didn’t want to. So I decided to wait. I sat down at the kitchen table to finish studying for my last two exams. As a hunter, Raven was eligible to test out for early graduation. Since we’re still considered newly mated, Alpha Avery was able to get me set up to test out early as well. Especially since we both have good grades.I’m working on one of the practice sheets for my calculus test, when Raven calls out she’s going to shower. Normally I’d join her, but I went to her assessment today, so that really cut into the time I normally use to study.I ca

RavenThe next few days passed in a blur. As Jax and I walk to the training center, my stomach is in so many knots, it feels like there’s a vise grip around me. I know he can sense my nerves, he’s been singing praises to me all morning. “You’re going to kick so much ass today. I almost feel bad for whoever they’re going to have you fight against.”I try to laugh, but it stops, dying in my throat. “I don’t know Jax, I have a bad feeling.”“Like the feeling from your gift or is this from you being nervous?”I sigh, “It’s not from my gift. But what if I don’t pass? What if I freeze and I get taken out in the first minute? What if-“He stops, turning me to face him and kisses me, effectively silencing me from voicing my doubts. He continues until he feels my body relax and leaning into him. When he pulls back, I’m sure my eyes are glassy from the fog he just pit me in.“You, my bad ass little mate, are a force to be reckoned with. I wasn’t going to tell you, but I think I need to. Dad

  • The Hybrid Huntress   Chapter 41

JaxWhen Raven and I get to the hunter training center, my parents are outside waiting for us. I know Raven explained why I need to be here, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. What male wolf, hell any wolf, would want someone touching their mate?I greet them and walk over to hug my mom, “You did this with dad?”“Yes sweetheart. Colleen is a very nice woman and her partner is a respectful gentlemen. I’m sure they’ve raised their son to be the same.”I nod, then look down at Raven. “I know you don’t need me to protect you, that you won’t let this dude be inappropriate, but don’t get mad if you hear me growling. Ansel doesn’t like this any more than I do.”She giggles and the reaches up to pull me down and kiss me. “Don’t worry, you’re the only wolf for me.”I smile at her. It doesn’t help much, and I’m sure she can feel it through our bond, but I try to make it look like it does. When we walk inside, I realize just how fractured my mind felt so many months ago. I don’t remember hal

My ancient hands hesitate on the fresh-painted railing: this is not the home of a timid child anymore, but the dwelling of a woman and her mate, self-determined and fiercely so. I pause a half-breath, then knock.Raven answers with her hair in a haphazard braid, still damp from a shower. She’s wearing a faded t-shirt that once belonged to Jax, the old pack insignia almost indecipherable from repeated washes. She lifts one eyebrow, a quick, surgical appraisal. “Did you come to get me for training today?” she asks. No preamble, no hospitality, but I sense her awareness—she’s already clocked the intensity of my presence.“No,” I say, “but may I come in? There’s something I want to discuss.”She turns, leaving the door open behind her, trusting that if I were a threa

  • The Hybrid Huntress   Chapter 39

Raven The next morning, when I get to the training center, I can smell Edward, Rion and Dorian inside. The worries about my nightmare are gone and I’m excited to choose my hunt weapon. I quickly walk inside, setting my water bottle off to the side and start warming up like normal. After a few minutes the three of them come out from another room. I smile and greet them, “Good morning gentlemen.” They all give me their own version of a light smirk. They know why I’m excited. “Raven, we know you’re excited. But there’s just a little bit of hunter history you need to learn before we get started.” Edward tells me as he walks closer to where I am. I narrow my focus and don’t feel anything negative from them. Using this part of my gift is easier, plus I don’t glow when I only try to sense feelings so I’m trying to practice using it as much as I can. Edward puts his arm around my shoulder and leads me over to the door they all just exited from. When we walk inside, the room is a sho
