The Choice to Live

Clara sipped from the cup and grimaced, feeling the scorching heat burning her tongue.

“Sorry, I did warn you it was quite hot,” Dr. Ellen said with concern.

“Really hot! But it tastes great,” Clara said, trying to hide the discomfort in her voice. She blew on the cup with more intensity before taking another sip.

“So, do you mind telling me what is going on with you? Is it that you hate this place or you are missing your old friends and classmates so much that you have started having these...what should I call them?” Dr. Ellen asked, trying to understand her daughter's emotional state.

“Mom, there is already a word for it. It's called nightmares,” Clara said, trying to make light of the situation.

“Do you think this is a joke? I mean, just a few minutes ago, you were screaming and crying because of what you dreamt about, and now you want to be making jokes,” Dr. Ellen said, her frustration evident in her tone.
