Chapter 3

The house was bigger than I expected, older too, the kind of house that has a personality, where the floors creak in specific spots and the windows don't sit quite flush in their frames. It felt lived in the way only old houses do. Priya pulled into the driveway, and before we were even fully there, the front door opened.

Her mother came out first. Small woman, Priya's same eyes, hair pulled back. She looked at Priya with this wide open relief, and then she looked at me, and the relief didn't disappear exactly, but it changed. Tightened. She pulled it back behind a smile that she placed carefully on her face.

"Zara," she said. "We've heard so much about you."

"Thank you for having me," I said.

Her hands when she took mine were cold. She held on a second too long.

Priya's brother was in the doorway. Maybe nineteen or twenty, tall, and he looked at me the same way the people in town had, that alert confused look, and then he looked at Priya, and something passed between them that was not a sibling look, it was something older than that.

"Come in, come in," Priya's mother said.

The inside of the house smelled like food and wood and something I couldn't place. They fed me. They were warm, genuinely warm in most of the ways that counted. Priya's mother asked about my job; her brother asked about the city. They laughed at the right moments. But every now and then I would catch one of them looking at me when they thought I wasn't looking, and the expression on their faces in those unguarded moments was the thing I kept snagging on.

It wasn't hostility. But something else. It was more like concern. Like I was something fragile that had been brought inside during a storm.

They showed me to the guest room after dinner, and Priya hugged me goodnight, and I brushed my teeth and got into the bed and stared at the ceiling. The house was quiet in the way city apartments never are, no traffic, no neighbors, just nothing.

I don't know what time it was when I woke up.

The house was dark. I was thirsty, I remember that; I was going to get up and find the kitchen. And then I heard the voices.

Low. From down the hall. I could not make out words at first, just the shape of conversation, and then I could, because one of the voices went up and they stopped being careful.

It was Priya's mother. "You should not have brought her here. Not a human, Priya. Here, of all places. And you didn't tell me you were bringing someone."

Human.

The word landed weirdly. I stayed completely still.

"I had no choice; she had nowhere to go, and she was heartbroken, and I wasn't going to leave her like that." Priya's voice was lower, controlled.

"You had every choice. You could have helped her without bringing her to Wrenfield. You should have taken her somewhere else, just not here."

"She would have been fine in the city." Her brother said.

"Would she?" Priya said. "You don't know that."

"She had her heartbroken; it's not like someone died, and this is not something you get to decide on your own." Her mother again. "There are rules here. The elders are already going to know; they probably already do. Mara said she could smell her from across the street…. Your father is not going to like this."

"I know."

"Then why...."

"Because she needed me." Priya's voice cracked at the end. Just slightly. "And I am not going to apologize for that."

I was sitting up in bed now. Fully awake. The word human was still sitting in the center of my chest like a stone.

A human.

She had said it the way you'd say not a child or not a civilian. Like it was a category. Like it was my category specifically, and it was a problem.

I sat in the dark guest room of a house I had never been to before in a town where strangers had stared at me and said I smelled wrong, and I thought about Priya's face when she invited me here, how certain she had been, how she had already known we were coming before I even said yes. If they called me a human like I was a different kind of species, then what are they? Oh my God, what have I done? Who is Priya now? I am in a strange land and it seems they are not humans. I need to get out of here now. What if they brought me here to kill me? But Priya wouldn't do something like that to me.

The voices went quiet again down the hall.

I looked out the window trying to get my thoughts together and plan what I was going to do next. The house was surrounded by forest; the cold air calmed me down a bit. About closing the window, something caught my eye. Someone was there, and the person was looking at me. Are those eyes shining? Oh my God, what is going on here? How can someone be out there at night in a forest and their eyes are shiny, and those colors, how rare, dark blue. I quickly closed the window. I need to get out of here; this place gives me the creeps.

I could not go back to sleep; my mind was on overdrive, and only thoughts of getting out of here were in it.

The first thing I saw after opening my eyes was Priya sitting by my bedside, her hands folded in her lap, watching me with an expression that was trying very hard to look calm."You are awake?" she said, coming closer to me. "I am sorry, you made me do it.""I made you..." I was suddenly hit by a wave of headache, my head felt like it was spinning. I pressed my palm flat against my forehead. "What did you do to me?""You were becoming erratic and wanted to leave so I needed to calm you down," she said, reaching over and placing her hands on my head."Don't touch me," I said, pulling her hands away and rolling to face the other side of the bed. "I want to be alone.""It's alright as long as you promise not to leave.""I won't, now can you please leave me alone," I said into the pillow, my voice coming out more tired than angry.I felt the bed shift as she stood up and a few seconds later the door opened and closed. The ceiling was the same ceiling it had been yesterday and the day befo

"I don't know Zara I am as confused as you," Priya said, and she looked it, her brows pulled together, eyes moving to the door her mom had just closed."Fine." I exhaled through my nose. I cannot believe the one person I have been hiding from just walked herself to my location."let's go find out what she wants," Priya said moving to the door.I followed her out and down the stairs, one hand trailing the banister, my jaw already tight before I even saw her.Bella was on the couch with her legs crossed and her arm stretched across the backrest like she had been living there for years. Typical. She looked up when we came down and that smile spread across her face, the one that never reached her eyes."My, my, my." She stood up slowly, looking me over from bottom to top. "I was sure my mind was not playing tricks on me during the ceremony.""what do you want Bella and why are you here asking for me." I kept my voice even and my feet at the bottom of the stairs."wow." She tilted her head

Five days.Five days since the mating ceremony and that conversation in the forest and I was still turning over those last four words like a coin I could not stop flipping. *I was waiting for you*. And then he just vanished into the dark like he had not just dropped something like that on me with zero explanation.I have not left this room since.I am not even going to pretend the reasons are simple. There are werewolves outside who could snap my neck without really trying, Bella is somewhere in this town which is already enough reason to stay indoors, and then there is Caius who has appeared out of nowhere twice now and whose dark blue eyes I keep seeing every time I look at the window at night with his *I was waiting for you*. So no. I am staying in this bed."Can I come in," Priya said from behind the door."Yessss," I said, pulling the duvet tighter around my neck. She pushed the door open with a book tucked under her arm and dropped it on the drawer without asking. That is how th

Dark blue eyes, looking straight at me and not even pretending otherwise."Are you stalking me?" I said, and it was only when I was already saying it that I noticed up close how structured his face was, everything sitting exactly where it should, especially those eyes."Are you done admiring my face?""No," I said, and my hands flew to my mouth immediately. I cannot believe those words just came out of me.He chuckled. Low and quiet.I dropped my hands and crossed my arms. "what I meant was no, that is not what I asked you and I was not admiring your face.""I wasn't stalking you," he said simply."Then explain how I have bumped into you twice in less than three hours." I held up two fingers. "And don't think I didn't notice the staring contest you tried to start at the ceremony, you were watching me the whole time.""I wasn't staring at you, your face just happened to be in my line of sight," he said, his expression completely straight."do you take me for a fool." I let out a short

A blonde girl came through the passage into the clearing wearing a sundress and a mask, and the crowd lost their minds. The cheering hit so loud I actually flinched. Girls around me were standing on their toes trying to get a better look, some of them had their hands pressed to their chests like they were watching something sacred."hmmph, bitch," Priya said under her breath, her lips barely moving, her eyes fixed on the stage with an expression that could strip paint off a wall.I turned to look at her. "you don't seem to like his choice of Luna, or are you jealous," I said nudging her shoulder with mine, genuinely entertained by the look on her face."Ewwww never, that guy is so disgusting and she is worse, they are a match made in heaven," she said, her nose wrinkling like the thought alone had a smell."I thought you were his fan girl, you were excited to see him when we got here, what happened your mood just nose dived," I said watching her face curiously, trying to figure out wh

He said it like I was nobody, and he wasn’t just watching me from the clearing like a creep earlier. The ceremony is that way, miss. Not even a full sentence worth of attention and then he was gone, back to that chair, back to looking like the room owed him something. I could still feel my skin getting goosebumps as he left his presence sent cold shivers to my body.I found Priya in the crowd and got back to her before she could come looking for me.“You okay?” she said.“Fine, just went to clear my head.”She did not push it. “I understand all this is quite new to you but trust me you will enjoy it,” She said holding my hands. We turned back to the raised area and I crossed my arms and tried to look like someone who was supposed to be here, and tried not to look at a certain dark blue-eyed individual.Darius stepped forward and the crowd got into an uproar. Everyone of them was excited to see himband some girls were sending him kisses from were they sat. “we love you Darius,”
