Margot POV

“Got it. Your call.”

Rhett Vanderbilt tipped his chin once, satisfied. “Eaten yet?”

“Not yet.”

“Stay. Eat first. Tell Henry what you want.”

“Thanks, Alpha Vanderbilt.”

He stood. The air shifted.

A thin, dry thread of scent slid past me, black ebony, steady and a little sharp underneath the heavy wood. It settled in my lungs like something that had always belonged there.

The wolf under my skin lifted its head, restless, ears pricked.

Three years of locked doors, and that single note just turned the key.

My fingers twitched on my thigh; I forced them flat.

Three years ago, someone competing for the same talent slot slipped me something in the lab.

The heat hit like a truck. My skin burned. My thoughts scattered.

I would’ve taken any Alpha within reach just to make it stop.

My scent is night-blooming cereus, quiet most of the year, almost nothing. Most Omegas cycle four times, seven days each. Mine shows up once or twice, three or four days max. When it does, the concentration spikes hard enough to drop people. That day it flooded the floor.

I thought I was done. Public lab. My workplace. My entire life, including my body, career, and reputation, was on the verge of being ruined.

The flower scent poured through half of the research wing.

A couple of Alphas nearly lost it. Colleagues had to hold them back.

Then Rhett walked in. Fresh off some top school overseas, just starting at the company.

Only an alpha raised on brutal scent-control training could’ve stood there without cracking.

I was shaking and reaching for him at the same time.

Fear and need twisted so tight I couldn’t tell them apart.

I latched on and wouldn’t let go, hunting for anything that might ease the burn.

He locked my body still, careful, controlled, and spoke low against my ear.

I was too far gone to catch the words, but the sound cut through the noise like cold water.

 Then the ebony hit.

Strong. Wide. Steady enough to hold everything.

It washed through the chaos and gave me something solid to follow.

I pushed my scent toward it.

Night-blooming cereus and black wood tangled in the air, soft and hard, rising and falling.

I felt the light in him flicker once, just for a second, before it locked down again and pressed mine under.

A sharp sting at the back of my neck.

Temporary mark.

The edge dulled enough for the emergency team to get the sedative into me.

You don’t understand that kind of attachment until you’ve been that far under.

He only gave me a temporary mark, but it stayed carved deeper than skin.

After that day, I figured our paths were finished.

I was past fairy tales. I buried the feeling and told myself it was one strange night: look once, feel the spark, walk away.

Fate didn’t care.

It dragged us into the same room and handed me a marriage that feels soft on my side and pure transaction on his.

I would rather not get closer. I can’t afford to.

Looking up from a safe distance is one thing. Standing this near and keeping my head quiet is another.

I’m scared I’ll start wanting things I have no right to want.

Lisa isn't concerned about rights. It just wants.

Rhett did not know any of that was moving under my skin.

He just said, “Someone will take you for fittings tonight. A few formal pieces. My father’s birthday dinner is coming up. I need you with me.”

Then he turned and went upstairs without looking back. The ebony lingered in the air long after the door closed. My throat stayed tight the whole way out.

Margot POVShe was right. I didn’t have the nerve.Maybe that was a good thing. I spent the entire subway ride home telling myself I wasn't concerned with the gossip. Then I opened X. Apparently, I cared.I searched for the video. The biggest posts were already gone. Some accounts had deleted their screenshots. Others had removed the original clip. The conversation was still there, but the footage itself was disappearing fast.Vanderbilt Dominion’s PR team had been very busy.By the time I got home, it was already dinnertime. Rhett was home early. That seldom happened. I walked into the dining room and found him already changed into his lounge clothes, sitting at the table. He looked up.His expression was completely normal. “You’re back.” “Yeah.” “Come and eat.”

  • The Hybrid’s Forced Bond   Chapter 36

Margot POVNora suddenly leaned across the table.“This is Rhett Vanderbilt we’re talking about.”Her eyes practically sparkled.“The Vanderbilt heir.” I already knew where this was going.“Don’t.” She ignored me.“What does it feel like to get carried by the most powerful Alpha in the city?” I gave her a flat look. She grinned. I had no doubt the leaked footage was connected to Hunter somehow. The problem was that the gossip wasn’t nearly as interesting as people wanted it to be.Hunter Vale’s wife, Grace Baker, was one of the biggest rising stars in the country. She was also a Beta. People had been talking about their marriage from the beginning. A top-tier Alpha marrying a Beta made people uncomfortable.Grace didn’t have a scent. She couldn’t be marked. To people who believed an alpha's partner should be chosen by biology, their marriage made no sense. That was precisely why the paparazzi kept watching them. They wanted cracks: a fight, a cheating rumor, anything they

Margot POVThe house was officially mine. I signed the purchase agreement that morning, finished the mortgage paperwork, and sat through closing with the real estate agent until every document was done. Then they handed me the keys.I curled my fingers around them and stood there for a moment. I had a place of my own. I hadn’t bought the biggest house I could afford.I chose the lowest monthly payment that still made sense. My job was stable, and with my credentials, I knew I could find another position if the worst ever happened. But I’d learned not to bet my entire life on things going well.I’d already seen how quickly everything could disappear. So I wanted room to breathe: a manageable mortgage, money left over for groceries, utilities, medical bills, and the unexpected expenses that always seemed to show up at the worst possible time. And enough left in savings that one bad month wouldn’t destroy me.That mattered more than having a bigger house. I wanted to get everyth

  • The Hybrid’s Forced Bond   Chapter 34

Margot POVThat selfish woman had taken everything. She’d drained our savings, emptied the accounts, and offered the rest of the family’s assets as collateral for her boyfriend’s debts before vanishing without a word.Almost overnight we went from comfortable to drowning.Grandpa took it the hardest. Already older, already carrying years of quiet strain, he watched the life he’d spent decades building disappear, and something inside him simply gave way.He grew sick. Less than six months later, he was gone.Ellen had spent most of her life living without fear of the next bill. Now she was moving into a cheap apartment, counting every dollar: rent, groceries, medical bills, and utilities, while everything settled onto my shoulders.I was barely old enough to grasp how quickly money vanished each month, yet one truth burned clear: there was never enough.Without my professor’s quiet help, I don’t know how we would have survived those years. I hated remembering that time, not because po

  • The Hybrid’s Forced Bond   Chapter 33

Margot POVI had always considered myself a reasonably well-mannered person.Which was probably the only thing stopping me from telling Arian exactly what I thought of him.I swallowed the curse that was already on the tip of my tongue.“I already told you. Go find someone in your weight class. Why lower yourself just to entertain yourself at my expense?”Arian gave a small shrug.“We're not at the point where we can go at each other head-on yet. All's fair in war, right? Besides, what do you expect? He was born eight months before me.”“Just eight months. And somehow, when he was born, the family stars aligned. By the time I came along, apparently it was more like a blessing in disguise.”“Your family drama has nothing to do with me. Aren't you worried I'll tell Rhett Vanderbilt you're talking to me about this?”Arian smiled. &ldquo

  • The Hybrid’s Forced Bond   Chapter 32

Margot POVBy morning, I was exhausted.I yawned so hard on my way into the lab that one intern gave me a concerned look.“Long night?”I nearly walked into the equipment cabinet.I had almost been late to work.Rhett had only come to my room once.Apparently, that was more than enough to destroy my ability to function before nine in the morning.I sat down with a stack of data and forced my brain back into work mode.I was halfway through checking a set of results when I heard voices outside the lab.I glanced toward the glass wall. A group was moving down the hall. People from the research institute.Several executives from the Vanderbilt Group. And then I saw him. Arian.I knew exactly why he was here. The group was touring one of the chemical research labs connected to the corporation's business operations. He had no reason to come into mine. And I would rather not see him. Twice was already too many. The first time, he had challenged me in front of everyone. The second time, he'd
