‘I opened my eyes and was shocked. ‘I was sitting under a tree, on top of a hill. It was a quiet and peaceful environment. The birds sang and the wind blew ever so gently. There was nothing but grass, stretching as far as the eyes could see. Tall trees stood everywhere. Silhouettes of mountains could be seen from far away. ‘But, why was I here? What was I doing here? ‘Suddenly, faint, muffled voices came from afar and it was headed to where I was. I quickly stood up and climbed up the tree, going higher as I possibly could. And when there were no branches left to climb, I sat down and kept quiet. ‘A deep man’s voice asked, “Are you enjoying yourself, son?” ‘A child’s voice squealed happily, “Yes, Father. This is the best day I have ever had!” ‘The laughter of children continued as footsteps came closer to the tree. The father and his son were then joined by two more people. An adult woman, who seemed to be his wife. There was also a little girl, who was, perhaps, their daughter
“Is it a custom in your kingdom to make your guests wait for an incredibly long time?” A disappointed voice came from the main hall as I rushed down to Queen Marta. “Your Majesty,” I spoke as I walked down the stairs with my hands behind my back. “Ugh! Finally!” she sighed, closing her fan as she walked towards me whilst our guards a death stare. “I supposed that time runs rather slower here than what’s in the norm,” she snarked. “I do apologise for the delay, Your Majesty. We’re currently in the middle of an emergency–” “Emergency or not, you and your people should value the worth of time! You and your mother should’ve greeted me by the door in the same manner that I did for you when you came to our kingdom,” she complained. She continued with, “I didn’t expect a grandiose welcome. But the least that you can do for me is a warm and friendly hello. But what happened? I endured such a long journey, just to be greeted by no one.” She added, “This meeting must be dealt with as soon
Arriving at the bakery, I peeked through the window to see if Laura was inside. However, the glass was too foggy and I couldn’t see through it. I then entered the bakery and looked around. But to my dismay, she was nowhere to be found. I then looked for Grandpa Ben but even he was nowhere in sight. And I wasn’t about to ask Ronald so I figured it was better to ask someone else. I walked over to another worker and asked, “Excuse me, madam?” She was quick to turn around and smiled. “Good day to you, sir. What can I help you with?” “I was wondering if Grandpa Ben or Laura arrived today,” I said. “My apologies, sir, but Grandpa Ben left an hour ago. He is yet to return. I’m not sure when he will be back but I presume he’ll be here later,” she replied. “What about Laura?” I asked. “Laura hasn't been here since this morning. We’re not sure why but it’s either she accompanied Grandpa Ben or she is ill,” she explained. “Is there anything else that I can help you with? Perhaps, you have
“Robert! Elizabeth!” James shouted as he stood from his chair. He walked over to us and continued, “What did I tell you about knocking before entering?” “What did we say about interfering with the designs of our rooms without our permission?!” I snapped back as I walked over to them. “I don’t think your children are entirely concerned about their mother’s well-being, James,” Bethilda entered the conversation, standing behind him. She continued, “These changes are vital for the recovery of the queen.” “I suggest that you close your mouth before I shove a shoe in it!” Elizabeth threatened, grabbing her shoe in the process. Gonzalo quickly held her back. Elizabeth wasn’t in her forgiving mode. “Don’t you dare disrespect your aunt in such a manner!” James yelled at Elizabeth. “And you have no right to shout at Elizabeth when we are the ones who are being aggravated!” I stood in front of Elizabeth. “This woman,” I pointed at Bethilda, “This lady that we have never seen before has the
“Should I become a horse, will you treat me just the same?” “Mallory, I’m not in the mood to have another argument with you,” I said as I kept my focus on Lady. I added, “I have too much in my mind right now. I have too much in my life right now. I can’t afford to waste time on another debate with you.” “Is it because of Laura?” she asked as her footsteps slowly approached me. I remained silent and proceeded with what I was doing. She was now aware of my feelings for Laura. But that didn’t mean that I owed her any explanation. “It’s Laura, isn’t it?” she repeated as she stood beside me. “Why does it matter?” I asked, irritated. I faced her and continued, “What is it to you? If I admit that it’s because of her, what will you do?” “That day when I introduced you both to one another, I saw the stares you shared,” she started. I returned to Lady as she continued, “I saw the horror in your eyes and the pain in hers. I’m not that stupid to allow that to go unnoticed.” I walked towards
It was late in the afternoon. With everything that has happened, my mind struggled to sort everything. It was exhausting. I already walked around the garden numerous times. I was trying to avoid thinking about everything. I wanted to rest my mind, even just for a little while. I wanted to speak to Laura about this. But it seemed as if she didn’t want to be found. “Robert,” a faint voice came from my left, interrupting my moment of peace. As I turned around, James walked towards me. ‘Couldn’t anyone in this kingdom give me some time alone?’ I asked myself. Standing in front of me, he asked, “Can I have a word with you?” “Can’t you see that I want to be alone?” I responded, trying to be as polite as possible. “I can join you on your walk. I just need to speak with you,” James insisted. I let out a sigh and nodded, walking once more with James beside me. He started, “I didn’t appreciate the manner of how you and Elizabeth spoke to your aunt. That was very disrespectful of you.”
As soon as she saw us arrive, she immediately stood up and curtsied as low as possible. “Gonzalo, you may leave,” I said, my eyes never leaving Laura. “Are you sure, Your Highness?” he asked. “There’s no need to worry, Gonzalo,” I smiled at him. “She’s a friend of mine. Kindly take care of the letter.” Gonzalo bowed and left me with Laura. “Laura?” I called out gently as I approached her. “Come now, Laura. There’s no need for that,” I helped her up. Lifting her face, I smiled even more as I was very pleased that she was here. “You don’t have to do such formalities when it comes to me.” “Don’t be silly, Robert. You know that I have to do that,” Laura replied, fiddling with her fingers. “I am in your realm, your kingdom. I must pay you the respect given to you here.” “Laura, you’re no different from me. Therefore, you don’t have to be all ceremonial whenever you visit me,” I explained, unable to contain a growing grin. Looking at her frame, it came to my attention that she wasn’t
We turned our heads and saw Nana Olsa. She tried to stand firmly as her crooked staff assisted her weight. “I believe that exchange of words is enough for today,” she approached us. “Nana, this doesn’t concern you. It’s better that you return inside. You don’t even know what we’re talking about,” Mallory snarled at Nana. “Can’t you show Nana some respect?” I scolded Mallory. “Don’t vent all of your frustrations on her. She’s not involved in this.” “Why defend her? She’s not your family?” she answered. “Who are you to tell me how to treat her?” “Mallory, don’t make me break my promise to your mother,” Nana threatened as she stood near us. “I don’t need your stupid promises to my mother! I can take care of myself,” she replied to Nana, showing every single speck of arrogance in her body. “Well, if that’s the case, I would like for you to leave the castle grounds,” Nana remarked, holding her head up high. Mallory was silenced immediately. “You said you can take care of yourself, am
