The Payoff

~Tara's POV~

The bell above the café door rings for the fifth time in ten minutes.

My head snaps up, my heart doing a painful little stutter against my ribs. A woman with a stroller walks in. I breathe out a shaky breath and sink back into the cracked vinyl booth.

Not him.

I glance at the wall clock. 11:15 AM.

Lea's yoga class ends at noon, and she usually grabs a green juice afterward, which gives me exactly forty-five minutes to get back to the mansion, slip through the service ga

The Slipping Mask~Alexander's POV~"Why do you keep running away from me?"The words leave my mouth before I can stop them. I step into the dim hallway, letting the heavy dining room doors swing shut behind me.Tara is pressed against the wall, her hands squeezing the fabric of her black-and-white uniform. She looks like a cornered animal, but the fire in her hazel eyes is pure, deadly defiance."Because you are married to the monster who holds my leash, sir," she whispers, her voice shaking with a mixture of rage and unshed tears. "And every time you get close, you just hand her the whip."The words gut me. They slide between my ribs like a crooked blade.I take a step toward her, my hand raising instinctively. I want to tell her everything. I want to press her against the wall, bury my face in her neck, and tell her that every cruel word I speak is a preplanned move to keep Victor's sniper rifle off her chest. But a shadow shifts at the end of the hall. Colt. One of Victor's spie

The Bare Minimum~Tara's POV~"Nora, are you absolutely sure?"Lea sounded really worried, her voice way too high.. She stands in the doorway of the guest suite, gripping the plate of lemons like a weapon. "I could assign someone far more proper. Tara is still learning. She's... slow. She makes mistakes."Lea shoots me a deadly glare over Nora's shoulder. Her eyes are screaming a silent command: 'Refuse the offer. Now.'I look right back at her, keeping my face perfectly blank.I know exactly what is happening. Nora Jackson is offering me a shield. For as long as the Queen Mother is in this house, Lea cannot touch me without insulting her mother-in-law. I am not going to stupidly throw away the only protection I have."If that is what the Madam wants,"I say, in a quiet and obedient way, "I don't see any reason to say no. I am usually less busy than the other maids, if that is okay with you, Madam Lea."Nora's posture relaxes. She turns to her daughter-in-law, raising one perfectly a

The Queen Mother~Tara's POV~The internet cafe has a strong smell of old coffee and cleaning stuff. It's perfect.I sit at a corner computer, using the last of the cash I took from Alexander to pay for thirty minutes of screen time. I pull up the fake email account I created. There's one message from Daniel. Attached is a scanned document.I click on it. It's the official maintenance log for the private jet, dated three days before the crash. But there are red circles drawn over the mechanic's signatures. The altimeter wiring had been flagged for replacement, then mysteriously signed off as "repaired" by a mechanic who...according to Daniel's notes....quit the very next day and moved out of the country. It isn't a smoking gun yet. But it's a thread. And if I pull it hard enough, Lea's whole sweater is going to crack.I scroll down to Daniel's message.File attached: 'Are you eating enough? Are you safe? If you need me to pull you out of there, just say the word.' — Danny.I stare a

The Bitter Pill~Tara's POV~Click. The safe door creaked open a little. The brass handle of the study door turns. My heart stops. In one quick, smooth move, I pull the heavy safe door open, snatch the small stack of plastic cards sitting on the top shelf, and shove the safe closed.I dive behind the huge bookshelf just as the study door swings open."Tara?" Alice's voice slices through the dark room.I press my back flat against the wall, holding my breath so hard my lungs burn. Through the small gap between the leather-bound books, I watch her.Alice steps into the room, her arms crossed. She scans the shadows, her eyes staying on Alexander's desk. She walks closer, running a finger along the shiny wood, checking for dust. She turns toward the bookshelf. She is ten feet away. Five feet.If she finds me, I think, my nails digging into my palms, she will drag me to Lea. And Victor will finish the job."Alice!"A scared whisper came from down the hall. Jamie appears in the doorway, lo

The Combination~Tara's POV~"You didn't drink your tea this morning, did you?"Alice's quiet voice sounds loud in the empty kitchen.I turn slowly, pretending I am super confused. Alice is standing in the doorway, holding a fresh cup, her eyes boring holes into my skull.I look at the cup, then back to her. I force my shoulders to sag, playing the tired, injured maid."I poured it into the fern," I say, letting a wince cross my face as I touch my bruised ribs.Alice's eyes narrow to microscopic slits. "Why?""Because if I drank it, I was going to throw it up all over the marble floors," I say flatly. "The doctor prescribed me Vicodin for my rib. Taking it on an empty stomach makes me violently nauseous. Hot liquids make it worse. I didn't think Madam Lea would appreciate me vomiting in the hallway."I hold my breath. It's a gamble, but it's a useful, medical excuse.Alice stares at me for five agonizing seconds. She is searching my eyes for a lie, looking for that sharp, clear aware

The Antidote~Tara's POV~So. The cat is out of the bag.My cheek burns like someone took a blowtorch to the skin, stinging with every pulse of my heartbeat. I wanted to humiliate Lea in the worst possible way tonight, but getting slapped across the face in front of half of Los Angeles's elite wasn't exactly part of the plan. How did we get here?Ten minutes ago, the living room was a picture-perfect spread of fake wealth and real vipers. I was forced to weave through the crowd with a silver tray of champagne, playing the obedient servant.Lea was holding court by the fireplace, dripping in Alexander's money."Speaking of jewelry, that necklace is stunning, Lea," Tiffany, a famous stylist, said, leaning in to inspect the stones. "Is that the new Harry Winston archival piece?"I was standing right behind Lea, holding the tray. It was too perfect. I didn't even have to think."Excuse me, Madam," I said, pitching my voice just loud enough for the circle of guests to hear. "You asked m
