Chapter 4

Author: Ungrieving Wooden Man
Sabrina, who was always swamped with work, sat quietly at Aiden's bedside holding a bowl of soup.

"Sabrina, it hurts so bad. Are you sure my leg isn't actually broken?" Aiden put on a face of pure agony.

Sabrina gave a resigned smile, blew on the soup to cool it, and carefully fed him a spoonful.

"Relax. I'm a doctor. I looked at your scans myself. It's just a sprained ankle and some scraped skin. You'll be back on your feet in no time."

Noelle was curled up against him too. "Uncle Aiden, you have to get better soon. You promised to take me to the aquarium, and you can't break a promise!"

My parents looked on at the two of them with real warmth in their eyes.

Watching the five of them together, so happy and at ease, felt like a knife twisting deeper into my chest all over again. Twenty years of a happiness that had never really been mine to keep.

A wave of numbness washed over me, and I pressed a hand to my own chest. The affection I'd worked myself to the bone trying to earn, it turned out, couldn't be traded for or won. Maybe I really was fated to end up alone. Everything happening now was just punishment for being greedy enough to want a little warmth of my own.

Aiden spotted our parents coming over and quickly plastered on an earnest, guileless smile, waving them down.

"Mom, Dad, what are you doing here? Did you come because you were worried about Alex?

"Ugh, honestly, it's my fault too. I ran into him on the street, and I don't know why, but he looked so angry at me. I was just trying to explain myself when the car hit us both..."

Aiden put on his most innocent face.

I clenched my jaw, wishing more than anything I could storm over and put my fist straight through it. But I was nothing more than a soul now.

The truth was, right as I'd stepped into the crosswalk, he'd come charging at me from behind, trying to shove me into the path of the car. I'd grabbed onto him on instinct, but he'd wrenched free, and the car had hit me square on while he walked away without a scratch.

Suddenly, a cold, mechanical voice cut through my thoughts. My heart lurched violently in my chest.

It was the System. It had been silent for so many years.

Ever since I'd spent every last Point I had helping Sabrina, the System had never once reached out to me again. And now, with me on the verge of death, it had finally decided to speak.

"Host, you regretting it now?"

I let out a bitter laugh. "I do."

"Considering your attitude, if you can fill your family's Regret Meter, there's a chance you can go back to your original world. Host, you up for this new mission?"

I listened to the System's flat, mechanical voice, hardly able to believe it. Maybe it was just my imagination, but I thought I caught the faintest trace of pity in that emotionless tone.

Did I really have a choice? I agreed without hesitation.

"Fine."

But I knew I was only fooling myself. People like them—when would they ever shed a single tear over me?

"Family of Alex Hale! Where's Alex Hale's family?"

A female doctor burst through the door in a hurry, cutting off my grief and shattering the warm, happy little tableau the five of them made.

"What is it? Can't you see we have a patient resting here?" my mother muttered, frowning in irritation.

The doctor's expression went cold in an instant.

"Are you all Alex Hale's family? He was the one in the ICU, and you're all out here laughing it up? Alex died five minutes ago. My condolences."

Sabrina strode over and hauled the disheveled, panicking Aiden up by the collar like she was picking up a stray cat. Murder burned in her eyes, like she meant to tear him apart right where he stood. "You two were working together. You paid her to run Alex down! God, I'm such an idiot—to think I actually believed you'd really been hurt..."Sabrina's voice broke, and fat tears spilled from her red, swollen eyes. I let out a silent sigh. But nothing about it stirred me anymore. If she'd only been willing to look into things properly, sooner, she wouldn't have misjudged me for so many years. "...No, no... what are you talking about, I don't know anything— "It hurts so bad! Mom, Dad, Sabrina's lost her mind, help me!" Aiden, his collar twisted tight enough to choke him, gasped and begged our parents for help. My father was already clutching his chest, practically choking on his rage."After everything—after all the trust we put in you—this is what you did?" My mother had c

Sabrina grabbed the woman by her collar with a vicious grip. "Who do you think you are, causing a scene at Alex's funeral? I know my own husband. There's no way I'm going to believe a word out of your mouth." The woman had clearly come prepared. She pulled a stack of photos out of her jacket and flung them into the air. "Look! These are photos of me and your husband, all cozied up! I even got pregnant with his kid once—don't believe me? Take a good look, everyone! See what kind of filthy scumbag your husband really is behind closed doors!" I glanced at the photos scattered across the floor. Every single one was an explicit, intimate shot. But the man in them wasn't me—someone had swapped my face onto them with AI. The guests forgot all about the memorial service and swarmed to pick up the photos, eager for a look. "My god, everyone always said Dr. Callahan's husband adored her—how could he be doing something like this behind her back?" "Walter has always been such a respe

Nobody wanted anything to do with Aiden. Eventually—no one could say how much time had passed—the crematorium staff came to take my body away. All four of them fell into an unspoken agreement: not one of them offered to stay behind and look after Aiden. They all left with the staff. My spirit lingered quietly, watching Aiden slumped on the floor. He sat still for a moment, then abruptly got up and tossed aside the cane beside him. Watching him walk, there wasn't a trace of a limp left in him. So it really had all been an act. If it hadn't been for him... I probably wouldn't have missed that first window to be saved at all. "Good riddance, Alex. You're dead now—so don't even think about stealing their love from me." He glared savagely at the space where they'd carried my body away. My funeral was set for three days later. Aiden changed tactics. For those three days, he stopped fanning the flames and badmouthing me—instead, he stayed glued to the other four, grieving ri

I was once again, stunned speechless. So this was the lie Aiden had fed Sabrina: that I'd cursed her with bad luck myself, that I was the reason death had shadowed her since childhood, and that I'd only played the hero and swept in to save her so I could marry her. No wonder she'd hated me all this time, always sniping that I'd tricked her into marriage with some elaborate near-death act. But when it came down to it, they had never really trusted me. If even one of them had been willing to come to me and ask honestly, none of this would have happened. Not one of them ever did. Watching Sabrina fall apart like that seemed to shake Margaret. She shuffled over on trembling legs and reached out to touch my hand—then let out a startled cry at how cold my fingers were. "...Alex! Alex, don't scare me like this. Why are your hands so cold..." Her voice broke, and she couldn't hold back the tears anymore. Seeing her like that, Walter hurried over to check on me too. He worked up the

Noelle was young, but she wasn't stupid. The state Sabrina and I were both in had frightened her badly. She stared blankly for a few seconds, then burst into tears and ran over to grab my hand and hold on tight. "...Dad! Dad! Wake up! I want to eat your beef stew again!" I watched it all in silence. My heart had already been broken so many times that nothing left in it could stir anymore. The mechanical voice in my head chimed in right on cue. "Congratulations, Host. They've started crying for you. The Regret Meter has climbed to twenty percent. It looks like the goal is within reach." I shook my head, not holding out much hope. This was just a scared kid reacting to a shock. Give it a little while—Aiden would come comfort her, and my daughter would forget all about me. I probably wasn't getting a second chance to go home. "Sabrina, honey, what's taking you so long? What's Alex playing at this time?" Walter and Margaret came hurrying in right behind her. Sabrina paid th

The moment the doctor's words landed, the whole room went dead silent. "What did you just say? Alex is dead?" It was a long moment before Sabrina finally spoke, breaking the eerie quiet. "Dr. Callahan, I'm swamped, but I came to tell you myself out of respect for your husband. You'd better go see for yourself." The doctor dropped that on her and hurried off to get back to work. "Sabrina, this is definitely another one of Alex's little stunts. He's still sore that Mom and Dad have been so good to me. He's always been into this kind of pointless drama—who knows what he's playing at this time..." Aiden couldn't quite hide the smug glint in his eyes, even as he put on his most earnest, soothing tone for Sabrina. But Sabrina had gone pale as a sheet. She rose to her feet without a word, dropped the half-peeled apple she'd been holding, and strode out of the room, ignoring him completely. "Liar. This has to be one of your games again. You've been acting so secretive. I'm goin
