Chapter 27: Scars That Never Heal

Ellis woke up, crying. She dreamt of her parents at her funeral. The conversation with Arkan was to blame. It had been the one to drag that matter into her mind. 

"What's wrong?" Logan asked, his voice soft and sleepy. 

"I had a bad dream," she replied. "Don't worry. Go back to sleep."

He scrubbed his eyes as he became more awake. "When children in Zothea get bad dreams, we speak about it. Legend says that if you say your dreams out into the universe, they will not return." Ellis thought about those words for a second and chuckled. Their cultures were not that different, it seems. 

"I dreamt about my parents." In the dark, lying in the arms of the man she loved, the words spilled out of her mouth without pain. She had never told him much about her parents, so she suspected he had forgotten that she came from somewhere unknown. How fascinating.
