Chapter One Hundred and Thirty Nine

Liana POV**

The room is quiet when I wake.

Not silent.

Just still.

The kind of stillness that comes after something has changed.

The bed is warm. The sheets are tangled around my legs. My body feels loose, heavy, like I have been unwound from the inside. The candle burned itself out hours ago. The faint light coming through the curtains tells me it is morning.

Kael is beside me.

His arm is resting over my waist, his hand relaxed against my stomach. His breathing is slow and even. He looks different like this. Not soft. Just real. Like the version of him that no one else gets to see.

I don’t move right away.

I just stay there and feel him.

His warmth. His weight. His presence.

My mind feels quiet too.

Not empty.

Just… sure.

I turn my head a little and look at him. His hair is messy against the pillow. His jaw is relaxed. The scar near his temple is just a faint line. I reach out and touch it without thinking.

His eyes open slowly.

He doesn’t startle

Chapter One Hundred Forty-Eight Liana POV I stay close to the wall as I move through the corridor. My steps feel too loud. My pulse is noisy too. I keep my hand near the stone so I do not drift. I do not want to be seen yet. I do not want to meet anyone’s eyes. I need answers. I need something solid to hold. The archives sit lower in the castle. Beneath the council rooms. Beneath the guest halls. The air grows cooler the farther I go. A kind of quiet that feels heavy. Like the walls remember too much. I stop at the heavy door. The wood is dark. Old. My hand pauses on the handle. I breathe once. Then I push. The room is wide. Tall shelves rise past my head. Old scrolls. Bound books. Stacks of parchment tied in rows. No servants are working here now. No scholars. Only the sound of my footsteps and the faint scratch of my breath. My chest feels tight. I step inside anyway. I look for what I came for. There is a table to the right. Carved deep with rings and scratches left by

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    The Door Below Contd

The cold of the chamber settles into my skin. Not painful. Just steady. Like the stone walls are breathing with us. Kael hasn’t moved his hand from my face yet. His fingers are warm. My skin feels too aware of them. I don’t look away. Not from him. Not from the weight in his eyes. Not from what I know we both just understood. Someone raised me for this. Not for love. Not for loyalty. For control. My throat feels tight, but I keep my voice even. “She was never just a tutor.” Kael nods once. Slow. Like he already knew, or suspected, or didn’t want to believe it. His hand drops, but he doesn’t step back. “We are not leaving this place until I understand every piece of it,” he says. His voice is quiet. Not the tone he uses when commanding. This one is for me. Only me. I look around the chamber again. The shackles. The stone floor. The iron rings are set deep into the walls. It doesn’t feel like a prison anymore. It feels prepar

Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Seven Liana POV We move farther in. The air changes again. It gets colder fast, like we stepped deeper into the ground. My fingers go numb even though I keep them close to my sides. The torch flame wavers, stretching shadows across the stone. Kael walks ahead of me now, but close enough that I can still feel him there. The guards stay behind us, their footsteps slower than ours. The tunnel begins to curve. The walls narrow, then widen again. The ground turns rough under my shoes. Dust rises around my ankles. My chest tightens. This part of the castle was never meant to be found. Not by me. Not by anyone. But someone has been here. Recently. There are scuff marks on the floor. Faint, but clear once I see them. Boot prints. One set. Not running. Not stumbling. Walking like they knew exactly where they were going. My pulse hits harder. Kael sees it too. He slows. Looks back at me. His voice is steady. “Stay close.” I already am. We

Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Six Liana POVWe move quickly, and the castle changes around us.The walls feel narrower. The air turns colder. The sound of footsteps and orders begins to rise from below, layered into something sharp and tense. I match Kael’s pace, though every muscle in my body is pushing harder to keep up.My heartbeat is too loud. It fills my ears. It makes everything feel closer. We take the stone steps downward, and the atmosphere shifts again. The corridors here are not polished like the upper halls. The torches burn lower. The stone is darker. The air smells like metal and earth. This is where soldiers move. This is where reality stays.Kael doesn’t slow. His cloak moves behind him like it’s part of him, like the castle air itself makes room for him to pass. Three guards fall in step behind us. No one speaks. No one needs to.My breathing is steady, but my stomach is tight.I keep thinking of the voices in the hall.Of the way they looked at me.Of how quickly t

The air feels warmer here, like the stone walls hold every word that’s ever been spoken inside them. I try to breathe normally, but my chest is tight. My body is tired, but my mind won’t sit still.Kael doesn’t speak. He doesn’t need to. His presence is enough. Solid. Heavy. Close.A guard opens a door before we reach it. Kael keeps walking. I match his pace without thinking.Something feels different. Not between us.Around us.Like the castle itself is shifting, turning its head, finally noticing me.We move past two servants near the archway, and I hear it.Not words.Just the sound people make when they stop talking too fast.Like they had been speaking about us.About me.I don’t look. Chapter One Hundred and Forty-FourLiana POVI stay lying there longer than I should. His hand is still on my waist. My breathing is steady now, but my chest feels full in a way that scares me. I don’t know what I am supposed to do with this. With him. With the way he looks at me like he already knows I will come back even if I try to walk away. His eyes are on me.He is watching. Not with hunger this time. Something quieter. Something that feels more dangerous.I look away first.I slowly move his hand off my waist and sit up. The shift is careful, slow, like my body is unsure if it is allowed to leave. My legs feel weak when they touch the floor. My fingers curl against the sheets. He sits up behind me. I feel the warmth of him at my back. He does not reach for me.He is waiting.I stand.I don’t look back. The air feels thick against my skin. I pull on my dress with shaking hands. The fabric slides over my shoulders, my hips. It feels different now. Like my body isn’t the same body
