Chapter 3 Grandmas diary

The Last Alpha Chapter 3

“Sir Hardurlf here is your drink,” the Bartender told him before I titled my neck in his direction. I pull myself just to have a glimpse at his handsome face. When he looked back, I get my wallet as I paid for my drink.

“You’re somewhat rude, mate,” he caught my attention in the word ‘mate’ my goosebumps crawled again on the surface of my skin. It was itchy, nonetheless, I didn’t move a single muscle.

His name is fragrant as him. I don’t hear his name, but it gets tricky when my head seems familiar when I first hear it at the front bar.

I can only hear my heartbeat when Hardurlf is speaking.

“My apologies, I-I need to go mate,” my excuse is tedious as well as I deliver those words in his front. His mouth quirks when he can feel the tension between us.

Seems like they let me go this time. When I went outside, I can feel my chest tighten!

I gasp in desperation to run away from the pub. The word mate… Grandma mentioned it before to us. Calling someone mate here is odd unlike in the District of Columbia.

His words have weight as well as his stare and everything he possesses. I’ve watched so many lycanthropy movies and series before… but, why does this seem surreal?!

I look for a taxi, only to find out. I have missed my groceries inside the bar! I slap my forehead as my feet don’t want me to go. With all of my might to neglect that idea, and everything Grandma said was pure imagination.

While walking again to that place…. My body becomes immovable when Hardurlf holds my groceries in front of the pub.

My lips slightly parted as it turned parched in his existence.

I don’t expect to see him again in this hour. The dusk is scary as hell in a new place. I don’t have anyone here to call my new friend.

“You forget these, mate,” he calls my attention as I scratch my nape in desperation of swallowing my pride. I don’t have anyone in here… why shouldn’t I be magnanimous to him?

“I forget it inside. Sorry for causing you trouble—“

“You’re new here?” he asked cutting my moment in the silent and cold night. I divert my attention to the tiny snow falling right before my eyes.

“Yeah…. A new volunteer for the hospital.” I get the groceries in his hand. The weather is freezing, but his hand is so hot and warm. This is so unusual for a person unless she has a fever.

Based on my speculation and assessment, he is not under the influence of fever. He is healthy and a little bit attractive.

“Where do you live then?” I don’t respond, but I put my hand on his shoulder to check it one more time. I pat it slowly and the warm sensation is present even in the upper body.

As a nurse, working for years… I can conclude something is wrong with this person. He is unusual, yet friendly in my eyes. Luckily, a taxi stops in our front. I grab the opportunity to elude this awkward situation.

I look at Hardurlf before he waves goodbye at me. As I go inside the taxi; I don’t have the gut to look back at him. His presence sends cold shivers in my spine, and I feel my lungs lack oxygen.

After a few minutes of waiting. I go home with relief. When I go inside and put the groceries inside the fridge. However, thinking about him gives goosebumps all over my body.

TOMORROW comes and I go to the community hospital for my request for transfer. I walk past the silent aisle before I turn left at the midwifery office.

I knocked three times before someone called me to come inside. A woman in her forties greeted me with a warm smile on this cold morning.

“How may I help you?” she asked me while her eyes are at the paper works.

“Good morning, ma’am. I am Evan Smith the volunteer from Seattle.” Her hands halted halfway before she looked at it for one more time.

“Jesus, this is a piece of good news for me. One of my nurses here just got pregnant and need to have a rest before giving birth to her second baby. I’ve been waiting for a week now. Now, look at you handsome boy.”

I am flattered by her words and the end of my ears is reddish.

“This is a small hospital for a rural area, so I am confident you know the rules. However, I will tour you around the facilities available for your work. The hospital will give you allowance and salary for overtime.”

My soul becomes lively after hearing her comforting words. I don’t waste so much time because they’ll be busy after this conversation.

“My name is Camille Cabrero. I am the head nurse here and you will be working under my supervision. Don’t expect this community hospital will be that busy like in Seattle.”

She is fun in giving me essential instructions. I listen to her one hour lecture, and I am so grateful for her kind consideration of my situation.

“One thing, I forget. You will not be a volunteer. I will make you a regular midwife here if you will do a good job. I can also increase your salary. We lack nurses here in Forks. They choose to migrate to different cities.”

“Not a problem, Ma’am Camille. I humbly accept your benevolent offer to someone like me.” I walk with her and let me sign the contract after going to her office.

I went home with the new uniform in the small bag she provided. I don’t see Hardurlf in the town. What a relief! However, what is left today is a silent moment inside my home.

After cooking my lunch, my eyes are gazing at Grandma’s bedroom door. I am like an infantile type when I look at the key beside the window.

For sure, Uncle Travis cleaned her room for me not to worry about today. Nevertheless, in the last bite of my spaghetti lunch… I go to get the key with her name engraved on the keychain.

I breathe heavily before my feet saunter in its direction. My hands are shaking when looking at this wooden door. I remember when Grandma cannot take her disease anymore.

We didn’t have any choice back then, but to transport her to Seattle for a good hospital. She said to me to go back to this place. Now, I am here. I want to see it once more before I let this lock forever again.

The door echoes a squeaking sound that creeps my body. The bedroom stays the same as what we have left it years ago. Uncle Travis for sure loves Grandma, as he kept it all with white fabrics.

These clouds of dust make me sneeze and sniff repeatedly. In the corner, I let take off the white fabric and see my reflection in the mirror. A tear falls on my left cheek when I can see how I become after leaving this place for good.

I am not Evan that is small and always depends on someone else. This deserted life of mine becomes an inspiration for an optimistic life waiting for me.

I cut my drama as I kept on searching for the cabinet key. I open Grandma’s vanity drawer and see a key beside her old white napkin that she always wipe on my mouth when the food always ruins my face.

Finally, when I let the white fabric lay on the floor… I see the cabinet that I am always anticipate opening.

I don’t want to miss a chance and let myself open the cabinet. I witness some clothes of Grandma and other things that I don’t even comprehend.

I continue searching for the diary that she always read to us. It’s about the lycanthropy and specifically the last Alpha.

My curiosity always kicked in when Katy even know about this one. Her memory was keen enough to remember the exact line like what Grandma told.

There’s something peculiar when I touch the small diary. There are bumps on the last page when before these do not exist. I bite my lower lip and see Grandma’s picture with my parents.

I clench my jaw in the reality that I am now all alone. I miss Mom and Dad! My tears kept flowing on my cheeks because the pain is excruciating.

As I turn the cover page. I see the exact line that Katy mentions. My sweats are beading on my forehead like pearls. I feel like I’m cranky when thinking about something that I cannot apply in the reality.

However, my intuition is wrong! When I accidentally skip to the last page. There is something unusual and well-preserved fur of a wolf and its canine.

“Where did Grandma get these?” I asked myself confuse about everything! There’s a note underneath the canine and fur. My heart skips a beat when Grandma’s notes are giving a profound meaning.

“The prophecy will come, and the only way for his male mate to be impregnated is to defeat the souls of the last warriors a hundred years ago. Selene’s will is boundless.“
