Elara

I walked down the long white hallway with my arms wrapped around my notebook.

Something about me felt wrong.

Every person I passed gave me the same look… and it wasn't the usual quick nod or tired smile I was used to.

This was different. Their eyes would remain on me for too long. And when I threw them a pointed look, they'd avert their gaze like they'd been caught.

Caught doing what exactly?

One of the lab techs, Anthony, actually stopped in the middle of the corridor with his coffee cup

FENRIRMy eyes widened. The tarmac… was so beautiful. But roads meant vehicles and vehicles meant noise and speed.Shit.I put my nose down one more time and found where she'd stood… right at the edge of the tarmac. What happened here? Her scent was mixed with a familiar scent. People of her… kind? Like Janet, and the rest of them on two legs. I scratched the back of my head with a claw. This was all so confusing. She definitely fainted here because her scent was a bit surface level with a corpse.Conscious, yet unconscious. She'd gone down here.Dark trails of something had stopped. Someone had gotten out, then the trail ended because she'd been picked up and taken somewhere in a vehicle.I raised my eyes to the sky. She was fucking taken! “Elara!” I opened my mouth to call, but something that wasn't a growl left my lips in a high pitched tone.I had no way to follow a vehicle and no way to know which direction it had gone. Unfortunately, the road was stretched away in both dire

ELARAI watched the streets go past the window, trying to organize my thoughts into something useful."How long was I in there?" I asked."Four days," he said, keeping eyes on the road.I turned to look at him. "Four days?" "You were brought in unconscious and they kept you sedated for the first two because of the compound in your blood." He glanced at me briefly. "Whatever you inhaled at the facility, it wasn't standard. The hospital couldn't identify it.""You said you knew about the facility's project. You gave me the fucking flash," I snapped."Some of it.""What part of it?"He exhaled slowly. "Well enough to know that what they were doing in there wasn't what they told any of us it was." He stopped at a light and looked at me properly for the first time since the alley. "I lost my job, Elara."I looked back at him."Three days ago," he said. "They called me in, told me my contract was being terminated effective immediately, and security walked me out of the building." He turned

ELARAI took the IV out slowly this time, pressing my thumb over the entry point the way I'd seen the nurse do it, and swung my legs off the bed. I stood up and waited to see if the room was going to tilt again. It didn't.I unplugged the monitor before the alarm could trigger. Without further ado, I found a pair of scrub bottoms folded on the chair by the window and pulled them on.Thankfully, there was a sock on the floor which was not ideal but was better than nothing.I yanked the door open. The corridor was empty in both directions.Perfect. I went left because left was away from the nurses' station and toward the stairwell I'd clocked earlier when they were bringing me in. My ten toes were on the floor, moving as fast as they coild before any of the orderlies would come in. I knew what they were thinking… … that I was fucking crazy. Before I knew it, the stairwell door was there and I pushed through it.The ground floor corridor was brighter than I expected so I slowed and c

FENRIRJanet's helicopter didn't arrive in thirty-eight minutes. I overheard that the board wanted to punish her for negligence. So I allowed them to take me into the make-shift facility tent. And boy, they were fucking prepared for me. The first thing I was aware of when they brought me back inside was the smell of the tent closing around me again… it was no different from the facility.Antiseptic and recycled air filled my nostrils. They left me alone for the rest of that day and through the night. I used the time to sleep and eat whatever they pushed through the slot in the door and sleep again. By morning the heaviness in my muscles had reduced to something manageable and I started thinking seriously about the security. The window in the room was reinforced, same as the observation glass. Fuck. The door was a magnetic lock with no interior mechanism, and the ventilation shaft above the far corner was a different story because whoever had designed this tent had prioritised t

ELARAThank goodness. I ran into the road, and put both arms up. “Hey!” The vehicle slowed with its windows coming down and a man looked out at me with the specific expression, taking in my wet clothes, missing shoes and whatever my face was doing."Please," I said. My voice came out smaller than I intended. "I need help."He said something I didn't fully catch because the edges of my vision were doing something strange like darkening and narrowing… No, no… not now! I recognised it distantly as a warning that I'd been ignoring for the last fifteen minutes because I hadn't had the option to pay attention to it.I grabbed the door handle."Hey—" he said. And then the road came up and I didn't feel it when I hit it because I was already gone before I got there. The last thing I was aware of was the sound of his door opening and his footsteps fast on the tarmac…Until we meet again… I hope the goddess shines her favour upon us.“Are you okay? Madam?!” ****************“Fenrir!” My e

  • The Last Alpha’s Mate   CHAPTER 26

FENRIRI was not asleep.I had been conscious for the better part of an hour, lying face down in the dirt with my arms under me and my cheek against the ground… but every single one of my senses was running at full capacity.Though my body gave a convincing impression of something that had been tranquilised into unconsciousness, which wasn't particularly difficult because I had in fact been tranquilised into unconsciousness only to simply come out of it faster than Janet had accounted for. That was their first mistake.Their second mistake was making noise."I cannot believe," Janet said, from somewhere to my left. Her voice had completely abandoned whatever professional composure she'd been wearing earlier, "that I am standing in a forest. At dawn. With mosquitoes." The sharp sound of her slapping her own arm filled my ears. "Absolutely not. Philip, I want you to understand that I am furious.""Yes, Dr. Janet," Philip said, from further away… probably near the equipment they were s
