LOGINELARA
I recognized those golden eyes instantly… They looked a whole lot like the one in my dream… And that fact frightened me… How could I have possibly been dreaming of a creature that I didn’t even know existed? With shaky hands, I reached for the switch, omitted the red light switch, and turned on the warm one to be able to get a closer look at the creature. The first thing I noticed when the lights came on was the chains binding him to the wall… thick, massive chains. I would need both hands and all the strength I can muster to be able to carry a small fragment of that chain. It could be used to anchor a ship. Slowly, my eyes followed the chain to the creature… It was tall…impossibly tall. Its claws were long and sharp enough to tear through human flesh without much effort, its body covered with hair, though it did nothing to hide the marks, covering its body. Several lines ran across its body where incisions seemed to have been made and sealed again imperfectly. IV lines fed into his arms, and monitoring wires traced along his body before disappearing into the humming machines stationed at a careful distance. I studied his face, wolfish, undeniably so. The snout, the claws, the tail curling slightly behind him. And yet I couldn’t bring myself to call him a wolf. He was far too large, far too big in the most fascinating way possible. And why, in God’s name, does it look like it’s smirking? “Dr. Elara?” I gasped, spinning to my left. Two other researchers stood in the room with me, both covered in full-body protective masks. I hadn’t even heard them come in, or perhaps I’d simply forgotten the rest of the world existed the moment those golden eyes found mine. One look at them told me everything. They were terrified. Their breath came in shallow, controlled bursts, and they had positioned themselves at a careful distance, hands hovering instinctively near the weapons strapped to their thighs. “Animals can sense hostility,” I said quietly, more warning than conversation, before turning back to the creature. He was watching me. Not them, me. With an attention so focused and unhurried that it almost felt personal. And yet, strangely those golden eyes made me relax. Maybe because I had seen them every night for weeks, in dreams I couldn’t explain and couldn’t escape. Whatever the reason, I felt myself relax, almost involuntarily. He seemed to notice. His head dipped slightly, and then he inhaled slowly, a deep growl rumbling through his chest. From the corner of my eye, one of the researchers shifted. The creature didn’t even flinch in that direction. Didn’t spare them so much as a glance. It was as if they didn’t exist to him, as if I was the only one in the room worth acknowledging. My fingers tightened unconsciously around the tray I was carrying. I should be afraid of this monster before me, everything about this situation demanded me to be, but what I felt instead was… Drawn. I was drawn to the creature. I took a step forward even before I could realize I was moving. A small sound followed, metal moving… The chains, which meant the creature moved too. “Hold position!” one of the guards said sharply and I froze. The creature stared at me curiously, then tilted its head. Could it be wondering why I stopped? I took another step forward and another and the chains moved again, its body leaning forward, just slightly as far as the restraints allowed. The distance between us closed and the air around me grew thicker. Setting the tray down on the floor, I reached out, my finger trembling slightly, probably speaking out for the side of me that thought I was crazy as I reached out to touch the creature. Due to its large size, I could only reach his legs, so I stroked one of it gently, watching his reaction to know if he hates it. He let out a small grunt, followed by a sigh. That’s a good sigh, I guess… My finger went over to the scar on his leg and I traced my finger over it, feeling my chest tighten… Why inflict such a wound on a living creature? This animal looks calm, so nothing justifies these scars all over his body. “This must have hurt right?” I whispered, craning my neck to look at the creature and I found those golden eyes already staring at me. “I’m so sorry…” He grunted, almost sounding offended. “What?” I asked with a slight smile, stepping back to pick up the tray and he whimpered at the loss of contact. “You don’t want me apologizing?” He grunted again. Still smiling, I lifted the tray to let him know I came bearing food, but something unexpected happened instead. For a brief moment, I felt a strange warm sensation sweep through my body, making my skin feel a bit itchy. I had to halt to take a deep breath and figure out what’s going on with me, but dark spots dotted my vision. I wobbled, the tray slipping off my finger and crashing to the floor. Suddenly, the alarm went off, barely audible at first. I blinked rapidly, my legs feeling weak as I crumbled to the floor. "What is going…on…wi” “System glitch,” I heard one of the researchers say. But the word felt wrong. It doesn’t feel like something was wrong with the system, it felt like something was wrong with me! The lights flickered once. Twice. The golden eyes never left me. My head grew heavy… too heavy… “Hey_” a voice said, but it sounded too far. The creature moved again, closing in on me, though not violently. Despite the restraint, despite the chains that should have held it immobile, it leaned forward, far too close to be considered possible or… Safe. My breath hitched, and the last thing I saw before darkness consumed me were those golden eyes staring at me directly in the face.FENRIRI opened the door and checked both ways. The corridor was quiet with linoleum floors and overhead strip lighting. It also had the particular smell of a cleaning product that every medical building in the world seemed to use. There was the reception desk I could see at the far end of the right-hand corridor.Shit, shit…I got halfway down before I saw two men in officer uniforms coming from the stairwell. I slowed my pace and looked at them properly because something was wrong and I needed a second to identify what. The uniforms were right. The boots were right. But their positioning was wrong. I mean, these scumbags were moving through a veterinary hospital with an alert body language of people on an active search.“Received an alert call on a big wolf.” One of them whispered into his talker.“Confirmed.” Another voice replied.“Proceed with extreme extortion?”“Confirmed.”I scoffed. These were Janet's people. And had them in officer uniforms.I knew this because I had watche
Fenrir Was I back to…?When I glanced down again, I saw what I had always seen in my dreams. Two trembling hands like Elara, two ridiculously thick legs like Elara. I raised those shaky hands towards my mouth. No fang. What the fuck? I withdrew them quickly, then turned both hands over and back again like I was checking that they were real. They were real.I swung my legs off the bed and stood. My reflection caught in the dark glass of the monitor beside the bed. You've got to be fucking kidding me.A man looked back at me. This was certainly not the image of the creature that had carried Elara through the forest and thrown her off a cliff. This man would never take six darts standing. But this man with broad shoulders, unshaven jaw and wild red rimmed eyes was in a hospital room. I blinked at him, and he fucking blinked back.I stood there and looked at him and he looked back and neither of us moved for a considerable amount of time. Then my eyes went wet and I couldn't stop it ev
ELARAThe woman handed a pair of jeans and a sweater from the lost property box while explaining that someone had left them six months ago and never collected them.I didn't even want to think about it.I changed in the back room, folded the scrubs and left them on the counter because they were the only thing I had to offer. The woman took them without comment."There's a women's shelter two streets over," she said, when I came back out."Thank you," I said. She didn't look convinced but she didn't push it and I left before she could decide to make any phone calls on my behalf. The lesser they knew, the better. The shelter gave me breakfast, a pair of second hand trainers that were half a size too big and a small amount of emergency cash from a fund they kept for exactly this kind of situation. My situation.I sat at the table in their kitchen, ate toast and answered the minimum number of questions required to receive the help.“Documents?” She asked.“Hell no.” I shook my head.“Oh.
ELARAHe paused. "She asked about the facility, and I told her what we agreed on."There was another pause, and his voice dropped slightly. I nearly fell over while listening."Janet, I'm handling it. I know what the timeline is, I've known what the timeline is from the beginning, just… give me until morning."The courtyard was quiet around him."She doesn't know about the secondary protocol," he said. "She just wants to go back for it.” He growled. “I am talking about him. She wants to go back for him."My lips curled. He was telling her everything. The bastard!“Yeah, she fucking puts her trust in me. I'll bring her in by morning, just have the room ready." He finished, dropping the phone back into his pocket.I let the fire door close silently. Then I moved through the back of the lobby. It would be really foolish of me to run through the front lobby. The front lobby gets more attention.I kept my head down, walking fast with my eyes on the door and my mind already three steps ahe
FENRIRMy eyes widened. The tarmac… was so beautiful. But roads meant vehicles and vehicles meant noise and speed.Shit.I put my nose down one more time and found where she'd stood… right at the edge of the tarmac. What happened here? Her scent was mixed with a familiar scent. People of her… kind? Like Janet, and the rest of them on two legs. I scratched the back of my head with a claw. This was all so confusing. She definitely fainted here because her scent was a bit surface level with a corpse.Conscious, yet unconscious. She'd gone down here.Dark trails of something had stopped. Someone had gotten out, then the trail ended because she'd been picked up and taken somewhere in a vehicle.I raised my eyes to the sky. She was fucking taken! “Elara!” I opened my mouth to call, but something that wasn't a growl left my lips in a high pitched tone.I had no way to follow a vehicle and no way to know which direction it had gone. Unfortunately, the road was stretched away in both dire
ELARAI watched the streets go past the window, trying to organize my thoughts into something useful."How long was I in there?" I asked."Four days," he said, keeping eyes on the road.I turned to look at him. "Four days?" "You were brought in unconscious and they kept you sedated for the first two because of the compound in your blood." He glanced at me briefly. "Whatever you inhaled at the facility, it wasn't standard. The hospital couldn't identify it.""You said you knew about the facility's project. You gave me the fucking flash," I snapped."Some of it.""What part of it?"He exhaled slowly. "Well enough to know that what they were doing in there wasn't what they told any of us it was." He stopped at a light and looked at me properly for the first time since the alley. "I lost my job, Elara."I looked back at him."Three days ago," he said. "They called me in, told me my contract was being terminated effective immediately, and security walked me out of the building." He turned
