The air inside the central control room was warm and thick with the hum of active mana circuitry. Copper wires glowed with soft blue light along the stone walls, feeding power into the massive master console at the center of the circular room.

Surrounding the main console was a glowing bank of visual monitors, crystal display screens projecting live, flickering CCTV feeds from every corner of the academy.

One large monitor in the center was playing a frozen, repeating recording clip on a loop.

  • The Last Howl   42. Spark in the Ashes

The gloom inside the study was absolute. It wasn't just the absence of sunlight through the narrow cottage windows; it was a heavy, suffocating despair that had settled over every breathing soul in the room. The radio sat silent on the desk, a small black square of metal that had effectively shattered whatever fragile peace we had managed to scrape together since escaping the Keep.Is this really how it ends? I thought, wrapping my arms around myself as a sudden chill ran down my spine. We survived the bloodbath at the academy. We ran through miles of monster-inf

  • The Last Howl   41. The Quiet After the Ruin

The silence following the radio's click was heavier than the stone walls of the Keep.No one moved. No one spoke. The automated voice had ceased, but its words remained suspended in the room like suffocating smoke. No safe zones. No evacuation points.I looked around at the small gathering in the dim light of the study. Vanya sat crumpled on the wooden stool, her hands pressed tightly over her face as silent, violent sobs rocked her shoulders. Beside her, Kenny stood completely still, his hands frozen near the dials of the black receiver. The color had drained so completely from his cheeks that he looked like one of the ghosts we had spent the night escaping.Even the recruits, the ones who had spent months boasting about their combat readiness in the academy courtyards, seem

"There is no help coming," Alexander repeated, his voice cutting through the small dining room like an icy blade. He set his hands flat on the wooden tabletop, his silver eyes sweeping over the pale, hopeful faces staring back at him. "The capital fell before the Keep did. If there were organized military units left to send, they would have secured the central roads forty-eight hours ago."Silence descended upon the room, heavy and suffocating.Vanya looked down at her hands, her lower lip trembling. "So... we just die out here?""No," Captain Julian spoke up from the armchair where Atlas had carefully propped him up. Though his face was still pale and his shoulder remained tightly bandaged, his voice had regained some of its old authority. "We don't die. We adapt."He gestured toward the small window facing the forest. "Look wh

I blinked at him, my mind spinning into a tangled mess of confusion and disbelief. His mate? The words echoed in my ears like a ridiculous fairytale. How could he possibly be so sure? How could a highborn Alpha like Alexander, the heir to the werewolf throne, feel a mate pull toward a girl who didn't even have a wolf? It made no sense. It violated every law of werewolf nature I had ever read about.Yet, despite the voice in my head telling me it was impossible, a sudden, traitorous fluttering erupted deep in my stomach. A flock of wild butterflies swarmed against my ribs, making my skin prickle with warmth. I suddenly became hyper-aware of how I looked: covered head-to-toe in dried, crusty mud, reeking of bitter herbs and swamp air, sitting beside a boy who looked like a carved god even when caked in dirt. A

  • The Last Howl   38. The Pull of the Unspoken

"Are you alright?"Alexander’s soft question hung in the warm, dimly lit air between us, competing only with the crackle of dry logs in the hearth.I stared into the dancing orange flames, my reflection flickering faintly against the dirty glass of a lantern nearby. I wanted to give him a simple answer. I wanted to nod, to smile, to offer a brave lie like I had done for Kenny and Lena back in the greenhouse. But the words died in my throat."I don't know," I whispered, my voice barely a thread.I don't know. Because how could I? Yes, my lungs were drawing air. Yes, my heart was beating beneath my mud-soaked tunic. Yes, I was physically alive. But inside? Inside, I felt like a hollow shell filled with ash.

  • The Last Howl   37. The Haven in the Pines

We didn't stop running.Even with the high stone wall behind us and the roars of the Keep fading into the distance, the sheer terror of the night propelled our legs forward through the black forest. The pine needles soft beneath our boots were a stark contrast to the unforgiving cobblestones of the academy, but the woods held their own horrors. Every twisting shadow looked like a lurking monster; every snap of a dry twig beneath a nocturnal animal sent a jolt of ice through my bloodstream.Atlas carried Captain Julian over his shoulder, his heavy, rhythmic strides matching Alexander’s pace at the front of our desperate pack. Kenny and Denzel flanked our sides like silent specters, their eyes constantly scanning the dense, moonlit trees.Just a few more miles, I kept repeating to myself, my lungs burnin
