Chapter 3

作者: Floral Shirt
Just as Yara and I reached a standstill, her childhood friend, Liam Jackson, showed up.

"Wendy, Yara, your place is really lively today," Liam said.

Wendy's attitude flipped instantly. She beamed at him and said, "Yara was kind enough to bring one of her classmates over to see how people like us live."

Liam said in a clear, cheerful voice, "And he's a male classmate, too."

Wendy responded, "It's only because his mom works as our housekeeper. Yara just happened to bring him along. Don't read too much into it."

He clearly knew I was Yara's boyfriend, but he pretended otherwise.

"I see." Liam straightened his cuff and said quietly, "Good. As long as he's not her boyfriend."

As he moved, a red braided bracelet slipped into view. The exact same one was on Yara's wrist.

I had asked about it before, and Yara had brushed it off. She said it was a lucky charm her mother gave her. She had gotten used to wearing it and never took it off.

But now I knew that wasn't the truth.

"Oh, come on. You know who Yara likes," Wendy said. "If you two don't end up together, those matching bracelets I got you will have been for nothing."

Liam blushed. "Wendy, you're teasing me."

Yara frowned and said unhappily, "Mom!"

Wendy shot her an annoyed look. "Fine, fine. You're all grown up now. I can't control who you like anymore."

After that, she acted like a kind and caring elder. She warmly patted Liam's hand and made small talk with him, completely ignoring Mom and me.

"Wendy, I picked out this bracelet from House of M when I was in Perly. Try it on," Liam said.

Wendy scolded him for spending so much, but happily held out her wrist.

The diamonds sparkled under the lights. The more she looked at it, the happier Wendy was.

As for the gift I had brought, it was still sitting by the front door, unopened.

Coincidentally, it was a scarf from the same brand. It was the only luxury item I could afford, and it had cost me two months of tutoring pay.

Wendy hadn't even bothered to look at it.

"If you ask me, you're the perfect son-in-law, Liam," Wendy said. "It's a shame Yara doesn't see it. Instead, she likes those lowlifes who only want to climb the social ladder.

"Well, as long as I'm around, some people will never be part of this family!"

Wendy was making it very clear that I wasn't good enough.

Mom was shaking with anger when she yanked off her apron.

She had always kept her head down, but she wouldn't let anyone insult me like that.

"Mrs. Quinn, your family is out of our league. Ian isn't lucky enough to be part of your family," Mom said. "Even if he wanted to, I would never let him lower himself like that.

"As of today, I quit. You'll have to find someone else."

Mom grabbed my hand, and we walked out.

Three minutes later, I came back.

Wendy looked surprised, then smirked. "So much for your pride. I knew you couldn't stay away."

Yara's eyes lit up. She thought I couldn't bear to leave her.

With everyone watching, I picked up the gift I had brought and took it from the entryway.

After all, I had spent nearly 2,000 dollars on it. There was no reason to give it to someone who didn't deserve it.

As I sank into the bed, my thoughts drifted again."Clara, go get some sleep. You don't have to take care of me," I mumbled. No one answered. After a while, I thought she had left.Suddenly, the mattress dipped beside me, and I felt a hot breath against my neck.Next, someone pulled my jacket open. The cold air made me shiver, and my head cleared a little. My eyes flew open. Before me was Yara, staring at me with her bloodshot eyes. There was an almost deranged obsession in her eyes."Ian, please don't leave," she muttered. "Stay back for me, okay?"She began to touch me all over my body."Yara, let me go!" I panicked and struggled with everything I had. But it felt like I had been drained of all my energy.I couldn't push her away.Yara acted like she didn't hear me. She lowered her head and planted her lips on mine. The kiss was forceful and relentless."I want you. I'm going to make you stay." Her tone was crazed. The buttons on my shirt popped off one by one and scat

Wendy looked embarrassed. She awkwardly pulled back the serving spoon and mumbled, "I was just trying to be nice…"Yara, who had been silent since I arrived, suddenly spoke up.There was fury in her eyes."Mom, can you use some common sense? Stop embarrassing us!" she yelled.Wendy froze at Yara's outburst, then her face flushed. "Yara, what's gotten into you? Don't talk to me like that!"She threw the serving spoon onto the table, then she turned away and started crying. The room fell awkwardly silent.Seeing that the meal was clearly over, Yara's father politely walked us to the door. He even tried to give each of us a gift as an apology.Just as we politely declined and were about to leave, Yara hurried after us and blocked my path."I never got married," she said.Afraid I wouldn't believe her, she rushed to explain. "Right before I said my vows, I realized I had always loved you. All these years, I've been waiting for you to give me another chance."She stepped forward

In the end, things didn't turn out as satisfying as they do in novels.I didn't have the power to go against the Quinns, so I chose to leave the country, almost like I was running away.Over the next eight years, I only returned to the country twice. The first time was to get my diploma. I had already completed all my credits before leaving the country, so all I had to do was finish the paperwork to receive it.That day, I was suddenly handed a huge bouquet of roses. The class president forced a stiff smile and dragged me to a gathering. But I still found an excuse to leave. After all, my flight was that night. There was no reason to see people who weren't worth my time. The second time I returned to the country was five years later.I got my permanent residency abroad and was preparing to bring Mom over.On the day we moved, Yara's engagement convoy roared past us. All I saw was her icy glance in the rearview mirror.I thought that was the end of it all. Before I knew it, s

I sat by the railing on the lab's rooftop.Suddenly, footsteps came from behind me. Yara, the other person at the center of the scandal, had finally shown up."You know I didn't steal anything," I said. The security footage Wendy posted was clearly from when I took back the gift I had brought. But she twisted it into "proof" that I had stolen from her."Ian, I know. But if you look at it another way, maybe this isn't such a bad thing after all," Yara said. I gestured for her to continue."If you don't go abroad, we won't have to lose each other because of the distance," she continued. "Once things die down, I'll explain everything to my mom. I'll also make it clear that you never stole anything."I laughed until tears filled my eyes. "Yara, have you ever thought about my future? If I lose this opportunity, everything I've worked for will be for nothing!"Yara looked annoyed. "Ian, why are you so stubborn? Just swallow your pride and get on my mom's good side. Then you can marr

I thought I would never cross paths with Yara again. But that night, my roommate told me Yara was drunk and shouting my name outside the dorm.A crowd had already gathered to watch. My first reaction was annoyance.I had already submitted all my paperwork, and Prof. Walker said everything looked solid.I didn't want any trouble at the last minute.Still, I went to see her.Yara sat slumped on the steps, her eyes full of mixed emotions."I give up. I admit I can't live without you," Yara murmured. "Ian, please give us one more chance. Can you really say you don't love me anymore?""Yara," I said quietly, "I didn't break up with you because you didn't love me."She froze."It's because I finally realized we're not the same kind of people. Neither you nor your mother has ever treated me as an equal," I continued. Then, I smiled bitterly. "We might not be rich, and my mom worked for your family for ten years. But that doesn't mean we have to give up all our dignity just to be ac

The exchange program at a top university overseas was invitation-only. It came with full funding and a generous scholarship. The total was more than enough to cover my student loans. But an opportunity like that came with a price.Prof. Walker saw the potential in my research, and she wanted me to stay on for my master's under her. That meant spending three years abroad.I kept putting it off because I couldn't leave Mom or Yara behind. But now, I understood one thing. The only way to earn respect was to become strong enough to stand on my own."That's wonderful, Ian! Prof. Walker will be thrilled." Roger could barely hide his excitement. That same night, Prof. Walker called me. "Ian, you made a good decision!"Before hanging up, she reminded me to get all my paperwork ready.Once the university approved it, everything else would fall into place. As time was tight, I went straight to the lab as soon as I was back on campus. After a week of late nights, I finally had everyth
