Chapter 2

作者: Floral Shirt
When we went back out to the dining room, Wendy was all smiles. It looked like Yara had already calmed her down. She was nothing like the sharp-tongued woman she had been ten minutes ago.

Wendy put on a warm smile and said. "Ian, I heard you did well in school. You know, I even helped cover your tuition.

"The year you took the SAT, I even gave your mom an extra $50 every month."

I forced a smile.

That was also the year Yara took her SAT. Every night after she got home from her evening study sessions, Mom had to cook her a fresh late-night meal.

Because of that, Mom didn't get home before 11:00 pm once that whole year.

Wendy gave my mom just $50. But we were supposed to be endlessly grateful for it.

I looked at Yara. There wasn't even a hint of gratitude in her eyes. She looked just as condescending as her mother.

Mom had always been proud of me and couldn't help but speak up. "Ian worked hard and got a high SAT score. His tuition was completely waived."

Wendy ignored what Mom said, and she changed the subject.

"Even if his grades were good, he's still not as good as my daughter," she said. "Yara even won a college scholarship. There was only one first-place award, and she was the one who earned it.

"Ian still has a lot to work on."

What Wendy didn't know was this.

One of the key factors for the college scholarship was overall performance. Yara was the only student in the entire college to get a perfect score.

That was why my academic advisor, Roger Lane, sighed and told me that even with a perfect GPA, I still couldn't beat Yara.

Wendy didn't know that, but Yara did. Yet she never said a word.

Mom was a little unwilling to back down. She quietly argued, "Ian had the highest GPA in his entire year. That's already impressive."

Wendy suddenly hurled a cup of hot water at Mom and screamed, "You're just the housekeeper! Who gave you the right to speak here?"

Mom stood there frozen, and her eyes welled up with tears.

Her hand quickly swelled from the burn, and next to her feet were broken pieces of glass scattered all around.

I was so angry I almost lost control. I wanted to slap Wendy and take Mom away right then, but I knew better.

If the Quinns decided to press charges, I couldn't afford what they would make me pay. I might even end up behind bars.

I would only end up making Mom beg them for mercy because of me.

At that moment, I finally realized one thing. This relationship was built across a gap I could never cross.

All it would ever bring me was humiliation.

Seeing the hatred in my eyes, Wendy happily dropped her act.

"Top GPA? Who knows if he cheated?" she said. "It's like how he claims he's allergic to shrimp. Who knows if that's even true?

"His mother is greedy and classless. No wonder her son has no manners!"

Every word cut deeper than the last.

But before I could say anything back, Yara's expression hardened with impatience.

She said, "Apologize to my mom!"

I stared at her in disbelief. It felt like I was seeing her for the first time.

The girl I remembered used to stand up for me when other boys called me a poor kid and threw mud at me. She had stepped in front of me with her arms wide open without a second thought.

Whenever my father got drunk and beat me with his belt until I was crawling on the floor, she would secretly take medicine from home and treat my wounds.

The bold, spirited girl next door in my memories was the girl I had secretly loved for years.

Even after the Quinns became wealthy and moved away, my feelings for her never faded.

But now, seeing her force me to apologize, I couldn't help but think I was a complete joke.

As I sank into the bed, my thoughts drifted again."Clara, go get some sleep. You don't have to take care of me," I mumbled. No one answered. After a while, I thought she had left.Suddenly, the mattress dipped beside me, and I felt a hot breath against my neck.Next, someone pulled my jacket open. The cold air made me shiver, and my head cleared a little. My eyes flew open. Before me was Yara, staring at me with her bloodshot eyes. There was an almost deranged obsession in her eyes."Ian, please don't leave," she muttered. "Stay back for me, okay?"She began to touch me all over my body."Yara, let me go!" I panicked and struggled with everything I had. But it felt like I had been drained of all my energy.I couldn't push her away.Yara acted like she didn't hear me. She lowered her head and planted her lips on mine. The kiss was forceful and relentless."I want you. I'm going to make you stay." Her tone was crazed. The buttons on my shirt popped off one by one and scat

Wendy looked embarrassed. She awkwardly pulled back the serving spoon and mumbled, "I was just trying to be nice…"Yara, who had been silent since I arrived, suddenly spoke up.There was fury in her eyes."Mom, can you use some common sense? Stop embarrassing us!" she yelled.Wendy froze at Yara's outburst, then her face flushed. "Yara, what's gotten into you? Don't talk to me like that!"She threw the serving spoon onto the table, then she turned away and started crying. The room fell awkwardly silent.Seeing that the meal was clearly over, Yara's father politely walked us to the door. He even tried to give each of us a gift as an apology.Just as we politely declined and were about to leave, Yara hurried after us and blocked my path."I never got married," she said.Afraid I wouldn't believe her, she rushed to explain. "Right before I said my vows, I realized I had always loved you. All these years, I've been waiting for you to give me another chance."She stepped forward

In the end, things didn't turn out as satisfying as they do in novels.I didn't have the power to go against the Quinns, so I chose to leave the country, almost like I was running away.Over the next eight years, I only returned to the country twice. The first time was to get my diploma. I had already completed all my credits before leaving the country, so all I had to do was finish the paperwork to receive it.That day, I was suddenly handed a huge bouquet of roses. The class president forced a stiff smile and dragged me to a gathering. But I still found an excuse to leave. After all, my flight was that night. There was no reason to see people who weren't worth my time. The second time I returned to the country was five years later.I got my permanent residency abroad and was preparing to bring Mom over.On the day we moved, Yara's engagement convoy roared past us. All I saw was her icy glance in the rearview mirror.I thought that was the end of it all. Before I knew it, s

I sat by the railing on the lab's rooftop.Suddenly, footsteps came from behind me. Yara, the other person at the center of the scandal, had finally shown up."You know I didn't steal anything," I said. The security footage Wendy posted was clearly from when I took back the gift I had brought. But she twisted it into "proof" that I had stolen from her."Ian, I know. But if you look at it another way, maybe this isn't such a bad thing after all," Yara said. I gestured for her to continue."If you don't go abroad, we won't have to lose each other because of the distance," she continued. "Once things die down, I'll explain everything to my mom. I'll also make it clear that you never stole anything."I laughed until tears filled my eyes. "Yara, have you ever thought about my future? If I lose this opportunity, everything I've worked for will be for nothing!"Yara looked annoyed. "Ian, why are you so stubborn? Just swallow your pride and get on my mom's good side. Then you can marr

I thought I would never cross paths with Yara again. But that night, my roommate told me Yara was drunk and shouting my name outside the dorm.A crowd had already gathered to watch. My first reaction was annoyance.I had already submitted all my paperwork, and Prof. Walker said everything looked solid.I didn't want any trouble at the last minute.Still, I went to see her.Yara sat slumped on the steps, her eyes full of mixed emotions."I give up. I admit I can't live without you," Yara murmured. "Ian, please give us one more chance. Can you really say you don't love me anymore?""Yara," I said quietly, "I didn't break up with you because you didn't love me."She froze."It's because I finally realized we're not the same kind of people. Neither you nor your mother has ever treated me as an equal," I continued. Then, I smiled bitterly. "We might not be rich, and my mom worked for your family for ten years. But that doesn't mean we have to give up all our dignity just to be ac

The exchange program at a top university overseas was invitation-only. It came with full funding and a generous scholarship. The total was more than enough to cover my student loans. But an opportunity like that came with a price.Prof. Walker saw the potential in my research, and she wanted me to stay on for my master's under her. That meant spending three years abroad.I kept putting it off because I couldn't leave Mom or Yara behind. But now, I understood one thing. The only way to earn respect was to become strong enough to stand on my own."That's wonderful, Ian! Prof. Walker will be thrilled." Roger could barely hide his excitement. That same night, Prof. Walker called me. "Ian, you made a good decision!"Before hanging up, she reminded me to get all my paperwork ready.Once the university approved it, everything else would fall into place. As time was tight, I went straight to the lab as soon as I was back on campus. After a week of late nights, I finally had everyth
