But she had already driven off.

I dropped my bag in the backseat and started driving. I couldn’t think straight and almost ran into another car on the highway.

I held my head in my hands, regretting every move I had made towards Maddy. Why couldn’t I  just keep it a fucking secret.

And just as if the universe knew I was feeling like shit—Maddy called.

I rushed so hard to grab my phone that I almost dropped it. I picked up immediately and went silent. What was I going to say?

“Loe…” She started. “I’m sorry I just walked away like that. That was…a lot for me to handle.” She said, while I found back the urge to cry out and tell her I just wanted to hug her.

“Let’s meet at our usual cafe spot. One thing at a time okay.” She said, and I could tell she subconsciously nodded.

I nodded in response like she could see me, and after the call got cut I immediately rushed to my car, slammed the door and started driving to her location.

I was so grateful she didn’t hate me yet or never wanted to see me at all. I immediately pulled into the driveway, got down and looked around for her.

I was nearly breathless when I spotted her resting on her car, with her eyes fixed on her phone. God she was so beautiful.

I walked towards her with a smile on my face, but before I could call out her name, a heavy duty truck took a wrong turn and was headed straight for where she stood.

“Maddy, look out!” I called out to her, taking to my heels so I could get her out of the way.

Crash.

The truck slammed into her vehicle, which in turn slammed into her and then—she was covered in blood with shards of glass poking through her body.

I stopped dead in my tracks, horrified by the scene before me.

Maddy. My Madison…is dead?

I slowly looked up at the truck and locked eyes with the driver, who was also looking straight at me.
