LOGINLEONA'S POV
A few hours after I spoke to Mr. Adams, I was cleared to see Maddy.
I walked into her ward and my heart dropped to my stomach. She was covered in bandages and sewn cuts, with an oxygen tube to her nose and one of her legs in a cast.
I took a seat by her side, fighting back my tears.
I stared at her for a minute, unable to say anything. What in the hell had I done? “Maddy…” I said slowly.
“I know you can hear me. I know you’re somewhere in there.” I said, tears already forming at the corner of my eyes.
“Please…I beg you please, don’t die on me.” I held her hand, resting my head on it and letting the tears roll down my face. “Please Maddison please. I don’t want to imagine life without you.”
“We haven’t come this far, just for you to give upon me now.” I continued. “I love you Maddison, and I don’t want to bear the pain of losing you.”
“So…Please, please I beg of you.” I broke into a stream of tears.
God please, please don't let her die on me. Please. Regardless of all the things I’ve done in my life, don’t take it out on her, please. I pleaded inwardly.
“Remember when you helped me with quitting drugs. How everyone around me saw me as nothing less than a drug addict, yet you thought differently. “ I sniffled. “You were the only one who saw the good in me. So please, stay. Stay alive for me Maddison.”
“Or the time that you helped me leave my sorry excuse of a father. I would still be going home to bruises and stomach punches if it weren’t for you Maddison. Remember that?”
I held her hand tightly. “I stopped sleeping in police cells because of you Maddison. I only started living when you came into my life, I became a real person when I met you.” I paused. “I just can’t lose you.’
I stayed seated by her side for some minutes, bawling my eyes out and praying constantly that she would live. After an hour I fell asleep by her side.
By the time I opened my eyes, it was already getting late. The sky had started going dark and some nurses stood at the door with trays of what seemed like medications and drips.
I sat up slowly, wiping my face to remove the residue of tears left. I turned to look at her again.
Then I leaned in and kissed her forehead. I held that position for at least a minute long. Before moving back a bit.
"I'm sorry Maddy." I whispered, still close to her head. "I know you'd not approve of what I'm about to do. But it needs to be done."
I pulled back and looked at her face for another minute before finally leaving.
I walked down to my place, since I didn't come with my car. On the way home my phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out and stared at the screen.
Dad.
I shoved my phone back in my pocket because I had nothing to say to him.
Once I got to my apartment, I went straight to my room, dropped to my knees by my bedside and pulled up the loose floorboard in the corner.
It was a spot I kept hidden for extreme situations. And this was one of them.
I pulled a gun out from underneath the floorboards, cocked the bullets in and tucked it into the waist band of my trousers.
I stood up and grabbed a bat from the back of my cupboard.
I looked at it for a second, then I grabbed my keys and went down.
Reynold lived 30 minutes away from here, but I made it in 20.
After parking, I sat in the car for a few minutes before stepping out.
I slammed the front door open, so much that it echoed across his entire house and stood at the entrance.
"Reynolds!" I called out to him.
No response.
"Reynolds!"
This time footsteps sounded from the staircase above. He walked down shirtless, with a glass of whiskey in his hand and a smug grin on his face.
"Well, well, well." He began. "Look who we have here."
"Did you do it?" I said. "Don't fuck around with me, I already know. I just need to hear it from you directly. Did you hit her with that truck."
He swirled his glass slowly in nonchalance. "You know what's actually sad?". He tilted his head. "You couldn't even protect her. Your oh so fragile little best friend and you just stood there."
"Answer the question Reynolds."
"You brought a bat." He laughed. "A bet Leona. What were you going to do with it, threaten me into confessing to your besties issue."
"Don't." I said quietly.
"Maddison was always too good for you anyway." He said, taking a sip of his drink. "Wasting her time on some washed up druggie with daddy issues. Honestly? She's better off in that coma than standing next to someone like—"
I swung the bat at his face without giving it a second thought, it connected with his chin and he stumbled sideways.
His glass shattered on the floor and he turned to look at me with a shocked expression.
"Why you little piece of shit!" He said, launching himself at me.
His fist reached my cheeks before I could dodge it, and for a minute my entire line of sight became blurry.
I quickly gained my stance back and grabbed him by the arm, throwing him into the wall.
Once he was down I went down town on him.
His face, body, chest. No body part was spared from getting a shit treatment.
By the time I stepped back, Reynolds was on the floor struggling to breathe with a busted face bleeding from all sides.
I reached behind me and pulled out the gun, cocked it and pressed it to his forehead.
He went very, very still.
"Listen to me very carefully." I said quietly, crouching down to his level so he could see my eyes.
“If you go anywhere near Maddison. If you so much as think about her. If I even hear your name in the same sentence as hers." I pressed the barrel a little harder. "You'll be begging me to pull this trigger. And I won't."
I held it there for one more second.
Then I stood up, tucked the gun back and walked out without looking at him again.
LEONA’S POVI let a week pass before I confronted her, a week of restless nights, of turning that overheard conversation over and over until I couldn’t stand carrying it alone anymore.Octavia was in the same room I first met her in, standing at the same window, like she never left.“I heard you,” I said, before she could turn around. “You and Mara. A week ago and I have been trying to decide since then whether I actually wanted to know, or whether it was easier to keep pretending I didn’t actually know shit.”Her shoulders went stiff upright before they relaxed a bit.“I assumed you might.”“Then stop making me wait for it.” My voice shook. “Tell me exactly what you did.”She turned slowly, and she looked older than the version of herself she’d been presenting, “Sit down.”“I don’t want to sit down. I want the truth.”“Sit down, Leona,” she uttered.“You’ll want to be sitting for this.”Octavia lowered herself into the chair across from me, hands folded in her lap, she said nothing at
LEONA’S POVI didn’t sleep again that night either, I laid in that soft bed staring at a ceiling I couldn’t see in the dark, turning Octavia’s words over and over till the words started to hurt my eyes. A reason she would rather raise you in poverty with a man who beat you than risk you ever setting foot in this house. What kind of house does that? What kind of family makes a mother choose violence over her own blood.Even as I turned it over, my mind kept sliding sideways and I wondered if she was sleeping right now, wherever she was or if the headaches Mara mentioned were keeping her up too, both of us were awake in the dark for entirely different reasons.I pressed the heel of my hand against my sternum. I haven't touched her in weeks nor have I heard her voice but here I was, lying in a stranger’s house discovering I had a grandmother and none of it meant anything to me at all except for the fact that Maddison Alaine might wake up tomorrow and never think of me at all.*****Mara
LEONA’S POV“She gets paid more money than she’s ever seen in her life to come,” Mara said, already pulling me toward the car. “Then, I suggest you ask better questions later but right no? We move.”I didn’t argue, I climbed into the car, and the second the door shut behind me, I felt relief, disbelief and grief all tangled together so tightly I couldn’t tell where one ended and the next began.“Where are we going?” I asked, staring out the window as the institution shrank behind us, finally leaving this shit hole.“Somewhere safe… for now.” Mara didn’t look at me, eyes fixed forward, scanning the road like she expected trouble at every turn. “Tomorrow you’ll meet her.”“Say what now?.”“Octavia.” Mara’s mouth curved. “Your grandmother.”I let that settle over me slowly, the weight of a word I had never had reason to use in my entire life. Grandmother, like I was someone with family and like I was someone worth crossing this many lines to save.“Why does she want me?” I asked quietly.
LEONA’S POV‘Soon’ turned out to mean four days. Gosh, I don’t know why I kept my hopes so high for nothing, though nobody told me that until it was already happening. Do I feel fucking stupid? Hell yes. Will I give up still? Hell no.I didn’t see Mara again after that conversation, no note or message slipped under my door, nothing to tell me whether she had meant what she said or whether I had imagined the entire thing out of my utmost desperation to believe someone was still fighting for me. Low-key, I felt really angry but another part of me just gave up on the idea that she’d stay true to her words, whatever happened, I would still prevail regardless. ******The silence ate at me worse than Ingrid’s drawings ever had but at least Ingrid gave me something to brace against and I clearly couldn’t say I missed it, that girl was hella crazy. It was just that the more the silence was, the more it gave me time to spiral.I kept my head down, ate what they gave me, even when it turned
LEONA’S POV“You don’t want to do this,” I said, low, gripping the tray tighter.“I’ve wanted this for days now.” Ingrid’s voice sounded so lustful. “Ever since they brought you in… oh gosh, I have always wanted you mama. I want to make you scream on top of your voice and call my name proudly.” She stepped forward. “Finally, you’re mine tonight.” A dark smile crept on her face. “I remember how you usually scream at the doctors or fight five of them at once. I watched through the window and I thought, finally… finally someone real.”“I’m not what you think I am.”“You’re exactly who I think you are.” She took another step, and the light caught the object in her hand again, a piece of plastic, filed down to something with intent. “Everyone else in here is broken and empty. You’re not empty baby girl, you’re still fighting and I can feel it coming off you.” My back was flat against the wall now with nowhere left to go and for one terrifying second I was seven years old again in my mind
LEONA’S POVShe left before I could ask another question and I sat there in that little room with a freaking stranger’s note against my wrist.Honestly, I felt conflicted between two truths I didn’t know how to hold them both at the same time.Maddy was gone, at least the version of her that I remembered loving me back and now, someone, somewhere outside these walls was still fighting to bring me back and hopefully get me out of this shit hole of a prison. That night, alone in my cell, I finally unfolded the paper with my hands and I could barely keep it steady. I guess, I was too anxious to look at it.Finally, I saw what was written and it read: Your grandmother is coming for you.I read it so many times yet still none of it made sense, I didn’t have a grandmother and my mother never spoke about family, not once, not even when she was dying and even after everything, they left me with debts and a father who fought like an untamed beast.I hid the note in the same place I had hidden
LEONA'S POVReynolds Miller. He was the driver!I felt my head take a 360 spin as I tried to ground myself in the realization that my best friend could be dead and it would be because of her shitty ex boyfriend.I soon snapped out my realization and rushed forward to help Maddy, who was actively be
LEONA'S POVI smirked and continued sucking on her nipple, while fingering her very wet pussy, going deeper and deeper. She moaned my name even louder, I switched to the other nipple and sucked it with the same intensity I did with the first one.She ran her hands through my hair. “Loe, I’m gonna…”
LEONA'S POVI sat across from the pavement, looking into the distant forest over the fence. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts—ones I wanted to have and ones I didn’t.What had I done?! It was supposed to be a secret, something that should never come out, my feelings for Maddy should never be know
