Chapter 1 The Deal Is Off

Author: Luna Lynx
"What?" Eugene Carter froze, staring at me in disbelief.

I looked at my half-brother and tore the contract to shreds. The torn pieces came raining down over Eugene, scattering across his face and clothes.

I leaned back in my chair, watching the smug look on his face instantly turn to rage.

My voice was cold. "Evercore Technology will never get a single license from Starcrest Group."

Eugene stood there for a full three seconds before he finally snapped out of it.

"Daniel, are you fucking insane? Do you have any idea what happens when you piss off my dad? My dad can wipe out the company you spent ten years building overnight!"

He kicked the chair aside and stormed out, slamming the door so hard that the glass on my desk rattled.

The shareholders waiting outside erupted instantly. They swarmed into my office and crowded around my desk, every face more livid than the last.

"Daniel, have you lost your mind? That's $300 million! You tear up a deal like that without blinking? Are you allergic to money?"

"Eugene's father is Professor Morgan at Ashford University! Cross him, and every university partnership we have is finished! Can you take responsibility for that?"

"You owe us an explanation today. Otherwise, we're starting the process to remove you!"

The shouting filled the room, but my voice remained perfectly steady. "In one week, I'll give every one of you an answer."

They tried to keep arguing, but I stood up and walked straight into the adjoining lounge, locking the door behind me.

I opened a drawer and pulled out a manila envelope.

Inside was every piece of evidence proving that my father’s identity and achievement had been stolen—his original college-choice records, a statement from his high school homeroom teacher, and recordings from people who had known what happened back then.

I looked at the old examination document from 1996. Its edges were frayed with age, but the embossed seal was still clearly visible.

The boy in the photograph was the real Dylan Morgan.

I ran my fingers over the document for a long time.

The boy in the photograph slowly gave way to the man I remembered—the man who had hauled bags of cement under the blazing sun at construction sites, made deliveries through the bitter winter cold, and rarely spoke, with a jagged scar across his forehead.

My throat tightened. I carefully put everything away.

"Dad, we're almost there."

The next morning, I walked through the company's doors.

The administrative director was waiting outside my office, her face ghostly pale. "Mr. Morgan, we have a problem."

Her voice trembled so badly that it was nearly breaking.

"The industry-academia partnerships we signed with 17 universities across the country were all suspended overnight. And the regulatory approval for our AI education products has been put on indefinite hold.

"Professor Morgan at Ashford University personally put in a word with the Department of Education."

Just as I expected.

My phone kept vibrating in my pocket. When I pulled it out, I saw more than 400 messages in the shareholders' group chat, all of them were criticizing me for being foolish—passing up $300 million and picking a fight with one of the biggest names in the industry instead.

Evan Mitchell, one of our investors, called right after that.

"Daniel, I don't care what personal grudge you have against Professor Morgan. If you can't resolve the certification issue within three days, we'll start the process of withdrawing our investment immediately. You'll pay back the full $200 million, plus interest, and you'll owe us another $30 million as a penalty for breach of contract."

I hung up and looked at the administrative director.

My voice was calm. "Don't worry. Someone else will come knocking."

Sure enough, half an hour later, the front desk called. "Mr. Morgan, a woman named Lauren Bennett is here to see you. She claims to be Professor Morgan's wife."

"Ms. Winter, I got accepted to Ashford University. I didn't let you down. You can rest easy."Rosamund's son was sitting in the audience. He waved at my father.Later, I took the stage as an outstanding alumnus. Standing before the crowd, I pulled out the 37 pages of handwritten notes my father had written all those years ago and held them up."The original blueprint for Starcrest Group's core large language model was written by my father 30 years ago, on a piece of cigarette-pack paper. I made his dream a reality."From now on, Starcrest Group will establish a charitable foundation dedicated to helping victims of identity fraud and academic impersonation fight for their rights. We'll also provide financial assistance to students who cannot afford college, so that more talented people like my father won't be overlooked, and won't have to endure what he went through."Applause erupted again. Many people in the audience had tears in their eyes. After the anniversary celebration,

My dad took the ID card and stared at it dozens of times. The name Dylan Morgan was printed neatly across it, and in the photo, he was grinning so broadly that his face was creased with wrinkles, his eyes bright as stars. That night, he even clutched the ID card in his hand while he slept, afraid he might lose it. He woke several times in the middle of the night, pulled it out to look at it, and only then could he settle back to sleep. The next morning at breakfast, he suddenly said to me, "Danny, I want to go back home and visit your grandparents' graves. I want to tell them the good news. And I want to visit Ms. Winter's grave, too, and thank her for remembering me all these years."Rosamund had passed away the month before. Before she died, she'd specifically asked her son to give my dad his old schoolwork, award certificates, and the teaching notes she'd kept for years. She'd said that her student had finally been admitted to Ashford University, and she could rest easy now.

Leo still tried to argue that he'd put up $500,000 in startup capital back in the early days and was one of the people who'd been with Starcrest Group from the beginning.I had Finance pull out the original investment agreement and transferred $2 million into his account, including principal and interest. When the money came through, I looked him straight in the eye."From now on, we're even. Don't come bothering me again. Otherwise, I'll have you charged with disorderly conduct."Leo's face went pale with embarrassment, and he stood there for a long moment without saying a word. The people around him started whispering and pointing, calling him a fair-weather opportunist who'd switched sides the moment things went bad. With no way to defend himself, he could only slink away. That same day, I issued a public announcement stating that Starcrest Group would buy back all shares held by former shareholders, at the original purchase price. We would also never do business with them aga

"I wasn't disgraced. I got my identity back! I'm Dylan Morgan. I had the top score in the state in 1996!"After shouting it out, he crouched on the floor, wrapped his arms around his knees, and sobbed like a child.I stood beside him and cried with him. Wind swept across the balcony, making the clothes hanging out to dry sway back and forth. It looked so much like the way we'd spent all those years, my father and I, drifting through one hardship after another. At last, it was over.…Three days later, the evening news aired a joint statement from the Department of Education and federal investigators. "Danny, I'm still your mother. Blood is thicker than water. You can't leave me with nowhere to turn."If Connor and I go to prison, it'll hurt you, too. People will point fingers and call you a heartless son. You don't want that, do you?"I looked up at her, my voice cold as ice, every word cutting into her."When I was eight, I had a fever of 103.6 degrees. Dad carried me three miles through the snow, begging you for five dollars to buy medicine. You told him that if I died, I died."Over the years, you paid people off three times to keep Dad from getting legal identification. Twice, you had people beat him up. The last time, they nearly beat him to death."And now you're talking to me about blood being thicker than water? She'd use our blood relationship to guilt-trip me, plain and simple. All I had to do was wait for her to come to me.Sure enough, the next morning, I got a text from her.Every word carried a threat. She wanted to meet me at Hilltop Lounge downtown, claiming she had something to discuss with me. Then, she added, "If you don't come, I'll go straight to your company's front door and tell every employee and reporter there that you refuse to acknowledge your own mother. I'll make sure everyone sees what an ungrateful son you are. Let's see how long you last in this business after that."I read the message and smiled.I replied with a simple, "Fine."I wanted to see what kind of show she thought she could put on.…Hilltop Lounge occupied the top floor of th
