Chapter 2 The Cost of Refusal

Author: Luna Lynx
I raised an eyebrow and motioned for her to come in.

The door opened, and Lauren walked in. Each pearl on the necklace around her neck was perfectly round, and her tailored skirt suit accentuated her refined, gentle demeanor.

The moment she entered, she handed me a business card, her smile polished, with just a hint of the condescension of someone accustomed to being above others.

"Mr. Morgan, it's a pleasure. My name is Lauren Bennett, a shareholder of Evercore Technology."

She smiled again, the expression perfectly practiced but devoid of warmth.

"Eugene was out of line yesterday. He's young, and he doesn't always know better. I wanted to apologize on his behalf."

She paused, watching for my reaction.

When she saw that my expression remained impassive, even that perfunctory smile faded, and her tone turned cold.

"Of course, we at Evercore Technology aren't unreasonable. We do value Starcrest Group's technology. The terms can be renegotiated. But Mr. Morgan, in business, it's unwise to be too aggressive. It can come back to hurt you. If you insist on refusing to work with us…"

She leaned forward slightly, lowering her voice, each word perfectly clear. "I guarantee that you and your company won't have a place in this industry anymore."

The threat was naked and icy.

But the next second, her tone softened strangely, taking on the effortless pride and indulgence of a mother showing off her beloved son.

"Eugene was spoiled by us, but he's a good kid at heart. He's smart and ambitious. You're young and accomplished, Mr. Morgan. Don't hold it against him. We only have one son, so naturally, we're going to be a little protective of him."

Her words felt like barbed hooks digging into my ears.

I suddenly remembered that bitter winter when I was eight. A draft came through the window. My fever had climbed to 103.6 degrees, my face burning red. I was so delirious I barely had the strength to cry.

My father clutched the only few dollars he had in his pocket and took me to a local clinic, only to find that we couldn't afford the medicine.

With no other choice, he called my biological mother, Lauren. But the voice on the other end simply said, "A child who never should have existed? If he dies, he dies."

By then, she'd already settled down with Connor Carter in Westbridge, enjoying the enviable life of a professor's wife.

I burned with fever all night, nearly suffering permanent damage. In the end, the elderly woman next door gave me half a fever reducer, saving me from the brink.

And now she stood before me, doting on the son of the man who had taken everything from my father.

She didn't even recognize me.

I shoved the emotions aside and let nothing show.

I looked up and met her gaze. "Are you done?"

Lauren visibly froze, clearly not expecting that reaction from me. Then, the corner of her mouth curved into an expression laced with mockery and pity.

"Success seems to have gone to your head, Mr. Morgan. You've forgotten how to show your elders some respect, and you've lost sight of what's important. I'm not here to beg you for anything. I'm giving you and Starcrest Group one last chance to make the right choice."

I pressed the intercom. "Security, please escort this woman out."

Two security guards quickly entered.

Lauren's expression finally changed. She shot me a furious look and snatched up her purse. She still tried to maintain her graceful composure, but she could no longer conceal the chill in her voice.

"Fine. Very well. Daniel, remember the choice you made today. Three days. That's all it will take for you to understand exactly what it costs to refuse the Carter family."

The moment Lauren left, my assistant rushed in, panic written all over his face.

"Mr. Morgan, we have a problem! We just got calls from 12 of our project contacts. They said every smart-campus project we previously won has been suspended. The contractual penalties alone are going to cost us more than $86 million!"

I nodded, letting him know I understood.

I was jolted awake in the early hours of the next morning by a call from the head of PR, her voice thick with tears. "Mr. Morgan, you need to look at social media!"

The hashtags #DanielMorganIsAPlagiarist, #StarcrestGroupStoleAITechnology and #TraitorDanielMorgan were already dominating the trends.

The most popular post was a lengthy article packed with text and images, claiming that Starcrest Group's core large language model architecture had been plagiarized from research by a leading laboratory in Astoria.

It accused me of accepting funding from foreign interests, attempting to monopolize the country's foundational AI infrastructure, and deliberately suppressing Evercore Technology, a patriotic company with fully independent intellectual property.

"Ms. Winter, I got accepted to Ashford University. I didn't let you down. You can rest easy."Rosamund's son was sitting in the audience. He waved at my father.Later, I took the stage as an outstanding alumnus. Standing before the crowd, I pulled out the 37 pages of handwritten notes my father had written all those years ago and held them up."The original blueprint for Starcrest Group's core large language model was written by my father 30 years ago, on a piece of cigarette-pack paper. I made his dream a reality."From now on, Starcrest Group will establish a charitable foundation dedicated to helping victims of identity fraud and academic impersonation fight for their rights. We'll also provide financial assistance to students who cannot afford college, so that more talented people like my father won't be overlooked, and won't have to endure what he went through."Applause erupted again. Many people in the audience had tears in their eyes. After the anniversary celebration,

My dad took the ID card and stared at it dozens of times. The name Dylan Morgan was printed neatly across it, and in the photo, he was grinning so broadly that his face was creased with wrinkles, his eyes bright as stars. That night, he even clutched the ID card in his hand while he slept, afraid he might lose it. He woke several times in the middle of the night, pulled it out to look at it, and only then could he settle back to sleep. The next morning at breakfast, he suddenly said to me, "Danny, I want to go back home and visit your grandparents' graves. I want to tell them the good news. And I want to visit Ms. Winter's grave, too, and thank her for remembering me all these years."Rosamund had passed away the month before. Before she died, she'd specifically asked her son to give my dad his old schoolwork, award certificates, and the teaching notes she'd kept for years. She'd said that her student had finally been admitted to Ashford University, and she could rest easy now.

Leo still tried to argue that he'd put up $500,000 in startup capital back in the early days and was one of the people who'd been with Starcrest Group from the beginning.I had Finance pull out the original investment agreement and transferred $2 million into his account, including principal and interest. When the money came through, I looked him straight in the eye."From now on, we're even. Don't come bothering me again. Otherwise, I'll have you charged with disorderly conduct."Leo's face went pale with embarrassment, and he stood there for a long moment without saying a word. The people around him started whispering and pointing, calling him a fair-weather opportunist who'd switched sides the moment things went bad. With no way to defend himself, he could only slink away. That same day, I issued a public announcement stating that Starcrest Group would buy back all shares held by former shareholders, at the original purchase price. We would also never do business with them aga

I had the top score in the state in 1996!"After shouting it out, he crouched on the floor, wrapped his arms around his knees, and sobbed like a child.I stood beside him and cried with him. Wind swept across the balcony, making the clothes hanging out to dry sway back and forth. "Danny, I'm still your mother. Blood is thicker than water. You can't leave me with nowhere to turn."If Connor and I go to prison, it'll hurt you, too. People will point fingers and call you a heartless son. You don't want that, do you?"I looked up at her, my voice cold as ice, every word cutting into her."When I was eight, I had a fever of 103.6 degrees. Dad carried me three miles through the snow, begging you for five dollars to buy medicine. You told him that if I died, I died."Over the years, you paid people off three times to keep Dad from getting legal identification. Twice, you had people beat him up. The last time, they nearly beat him to death."And now you're talking to me about blood being thicker than water? "They're all just throwing each other under the bus.""This family is unbelievable. Thieves turning on thieves."I shut off the video and didn't give it another thought.I had known exactly what Lauren's trump card would be. She'd use our blood relationship to guilt-trip me, plain and simple. All I had to do was wait for her to come to me.Sure enough, the next morning, I got a text from her.Every word carried a threat. She wanted to meet me at Hilltop Lounge downtown, claiming she had something to discuss with me. Then, she added, "If you don't come, I'll go straight to your company's front door and tell every employee and reporter there that you refuse to acknowledge your own mother. I'll make sure everyone sees what an ungrateful son you are. Let's see how long you last in this business after that."I read the message and smiled.I replied with a simple, "Fine."I wanted to see what kind of show she thought she could put on.…Hilltop Lounge occupied the top floor of th
