Mag-log inClover Gilmore has spent her life being invisible. As the female heir to the Beta position, she's endured years of sabotage, mockery, and cruelty, especially from Alpha Heir Milton Kirkwood and her stepbrother Peter, who both hid their true feelings behind hostility. But the Goddess has other plans. When Clover's wolf finally emerges, Milton's fated bond snaps into place with a single kiss. Yet he isn't her only potential mate. Peter has loved her secretly for years, and a second bond simmers beneath the surface—one that can only form if all three hearts are willing. Before they can navigate this impossible situation, rogues attack with military precision. Clover discovers she's been their target for a decade, connected to a conspiracy that murdered her mother and her baby brother, her father never knew about. A shadowy figure called the Rogue Prince has been waiting, watching, planning. Now buried secrets are surfacing. A traitor hides within the pack. And Clover must embrace the strength she's always possessed while three hearts learn whether they can beat as one. She was dismissed as worthless. She might be the key to everything and to them.
view moreA knock on the Beta’s office door made him look up. “Enter.” Beta Theodore Gilmore called.
“You wanted to see me step-father?” His stepson, Peter Sherwood, stated rather than asked.
“Ah, yes, sit, we have much to discuss.”
“About sir?” Peter asked.
“My daughter,” Theodore stated flatly.
“What about my step-sister Clover?” Peter asked again, shock written all over his face. It was well known to members of the pack that he had been nothing but an asshole to his step-sister, and now he knew something was going on.
“Step-sister? From tonight, I want you to take her as your mate. At her coming of age.”
Peter froze at his stepfather’s words, “What stepfather? Sorry, I think I misunderstood.” He thought to himself, ‘This has to be some kind of trap. Did his stepfather know about his hidden feelings for his step-sister Clover?’
“No, you didn’t mishear me at all. My daughter is the only one of my bloodline that can take the Beta position, and as my step-son, that place would be yours if you take her as your mate.”
“Ah, sir, one problem with that is she can’t even be in the same room as me. I don’t know if you got the memo, but I haven’t been the nicest to her, and besides, the pack is unlikely to allow such a match. The Alpha wouldn’t allow it, I’m sure of it. However, what if her fated mate is here? I can’t compete with a fated bond.” Peter’s heart raced at the idea. He had been in love with her in secret, but thinking that she was off limits, he had pushed her away through cruelty, but the idea of being mated to her both thrilled and terrified him.
“You know as well as I do that it is unlikely fated mates are rare, besides no one has ever taken any interest in my daughter, and she has no interest in any male, for that matter. I’m starting to think she doesn’t even want a mate.” Beta Theodore stated matter-of-factly.
“We don’t know that we should at least see what happens tonight before we try this. I’m not liking this. Besides, no one is going to believe I’ve changed my mind and my heart all of a sudden. Besides, I can’t even magically claim it’s a mate bond thing as she hasn’t shifted yet.”
"My daughter will have a coming-of-age ceremony tonight, and as per tradition, she will shift for the first time," Theodore said, leaning back in his chair. His eyes narrowed as he studied Peter's expressions. He could see the conflict in his stepson's eyes, the way his hands gripped the armrests a little too tightly. "After that, I expect you to make your move."
Peter felt his throat tighten. He had spent years pushing Clover away since he was 16 and she was 13, tormenting her, all to hide the feelings that threatened to consume him. How could he suddenly approach her as a potential mate? She would laugh in his face, or worse, fear him.
"Sir, with all due respect, Clover hates me," Peter said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Theodore smiled, a cold, calculating expression that didn't reach his eyes. "Hate is a strong emotion, boy. Strong emotions can be redirected."
Meanwhile, in the Alpha Heir Milton Kirkwood’s office, his wolf was pacing restlessly in his mind as if something was off.
“For the love of the Goddess, will you stop pacing in my mind? I have to finish these reports before I have to fulfil my duty as Alpha Heir.”
-Can’t you feel that something is about to change?-
“Nothing is going to change except I’ll have a proper Beta, not a female one. Peter, her stepbrother and our friend, would be a better option.”
-Suit yourself. But don’t get all weird, and do anything stupid if you get a surprise.-
“Like anything could get any weirder than that, I got condemned with a female Beta. The Goddess must have been taking the piss out of our pack.”
-Why did I get condemned with an asshole for a human? Who can’t see someone’s true worth due to being such an ass?-
Milton rakes his hands through his hair, frustration etching lines across his forehead. His wolf's persistence grates on his already frayed nerves, especially with the Beta Heir's coming-of-age ceremony looming tonight. The thought of Clover Gilmore standing before the pack, being acknowledged as the future Beta, makes his teeth clench involuntarily.
"I don't need this today," he mutters, shuffling the papers on his desk with unnecessary force.
Across the pack house, Clover stands in her bedroom, staring at the ceremonial dress laid out on her bed. The silver-threaded fabric catches the afternoon light, making the traditional Beta symbols shimmer along the hem. Her fingers trace the intricate patterns, a weight settling in her chest that has nothing to do with the impending shift.
"Just breathe," she whispers to herself. "Tonight changes nothing. You've been preparing for this your entire life."
But even as she says the words, she doesn't believe them. Something in the air feels different today, charged with potential and danger in equal measure. Her wolf, dormant until now, stirs faintly at the edges of her consciousness, not quite awake, but no longer fully asleep either.
In his office, Theodore smiles to himself as Peter leaves, the door clicking shut behind him. The plan is set in motion. His daughter will take her rightful place, with Peter by her side to satisfy the more traditional elements of the pack. The fact that they despise each other is merely an inconvenient detail, easily overcome with time and proper incentives.
"Sir?" Reginald, his advisor, steps into the room without knocking. "The Alpha requests your presence."
Theodore's smile falters. "What does he want now?"
"He didn't say, sir. But he mentioned it concerns tonight's ceremony."
A flicker of unease passes through Theodore. Alpha Kirkwood rarely involves himself directly in pack matters these days, preferring to delegate to his son. For him to request a meeting about Clover's ceremony suggests complications.
Milton nods, understanding the gravity of her warning. "I deserve that," he admits. "But it won't be necessary, because this isn't a trick. My wolf has always known you were mine, Clover. I was just too stubborn, too proud to listen."The forest around them seems to hold its breath, ancient trees bearing witness to this moment of truth between them. Somewhere in the distance, a wolf howls, perhaps one of the pack, perhaps something older and wilder, blessing what was always meant to be.‘I have to try something, stepfather will expect her home.’ Peter thought, knowing it was wrong, but his heart wanted her for himself, and this bond was stopping him from having her.Peter stepped out of the shadows, “Clover's father and mother are looking for you to come home. You’ve made a fool of yourself tonight; the whole pack is talking.”Milton's head whips around, rage flaring in his eyes as they lock on Peter. The intrusion shatters the fragile moment of connection he'd been building with Clov
“Please, Clover, give me a chance to court you properly, show you the man I really am. I know I’ve been an ass, and I’ve given you no reason to believe me, but please give us a chance.”Silence hangs heavy between them, broken only by the soft rustling of leaves in the night breeze. Clover presses her palm against the gnarled interior of the willow, her mind a battleground between hope and fear. Sage continues to push against her consciousness, urging her to trust what her human heart cannot.-He means it,- Sage insists. -His wolf is in agony. Feel it.-And she can feel it, a strange, resonating ache that seems to vibrate through the very air between them. The mating bond, new and fragile but undeniably present, transmits Milton's genuine distress across the space that separates them.Outside, Milton takes a tentative step closer to the ancient willow, his wolf guiding him with unusual gentleness. Gone is the dominant, aggressive animal that has driven him for years; in its place stan
His wolf whines in anguish, the animal understanding what the man is only beginning to comprehend, that they have wounded their mate in ways that may be irreparable. The bond between them, revealed tonight by the Goddess herself, has been poisoned by years of deliberate cruelty.Peter pauses at the edge of a small clearing, the scent of Milton strong on the night air. He crouches behind a fallen log, watching as his friend stands motionless, face contorted with self-loathing. Despite his own complicated feelings for Clover, Peter can't help but feel sympathy for Milton in this moment. The weight of recognition, of understanding what you've done to someone you were meant to cherish, is crushing."You really didn't know, did you?" Peter murmurs, too low for Milton to hear. "All these years, you had no idea she was yours."Inside the hollow willow, Clover presses her palm against the rough interior, drawing comfort from its familiar texture. This tree has been her sanctuary since she was
His wolf whines inside him, sensing the turmoil ahead. Peter hesitates at a fork in the path, sniffing the air. Clover's scent leads toward the eastern boundary, toward her secret place. He'd discovered her hideaway years ago but had kept that knowledge to himself, never invading her sanctuary even when tempted to torment her there.Milton, meanwhile, has lost Clover's trail at the Claiming Pools. He circles the steaming waters in frustration, his wolf growing increasingly frantic."Clover!" he calls, voice echoing through the trees. "Please! We need to talk!"Only the night creatures answer him, the forest seeming to close ranks around Clover's escape route. Milton rakes his hands through his hair, self-loathing washing over him in waves."How could I have been so blind?" he whispers, the magnitude of his years-long denial crashing down upon him. His wolf had recognised her from the beginning, had pushed and prodded and howled for him to acknowledge what was right before his eyes. Bu
Without a word, he was on the move; his friends were right, he might have felt like he had been rejected in that moment, but he had been doing that to her for years, and the shame burned like acid.Milton races through the forest, his heart hammering against his ribs. The ceremonial circle fades be
"Milton?" Peter calls, moving toward his friend with concern etched across his features. "Are you alright?"But Milton doesn't respond. Can't respond. His wolf has taken the reins completely, pushing his human half into the background as ancient instincts override years of denial. His body moves of
"You look beautiful," Eliza says softly, adjusting the drape of fabric over Clover's shoulders.Clover meets her own eyes in the mirror, searching for courage in their amber depths. "Beauty won't matter if I fail to shift."Eliza's hands were still on her shoulders. "You won't fail. Your wolf is st
As they face each other in the sacred clearing, neither notices the shimmer in the air around Lettie Gilmore's memorial stone, a subtle disturbance that makes the wildflowers tremble despite the absence of wind. The Goddess watches, unseen but present, as fate begins to tighten around them all.Pet
