The two stepped onto the dance floor and Edward gently wrapped his arm around Alicia's waist, her hand on his shoulder. In time with the music, they began to spin gracefully.
"Remember when we were little and learnt to dance in your back garden?" Edward asked softly, a nostalgic glint in his eyes.
Alicia laughed, "How could I forget? You were always stepping on my feet back then, and we were both as clumsy as two little bears."
Edward smiled back, "It seems we've both improved a lot."
They danced on the dance floor as if they were back in those carefree childhood days. Alicia felt a long-lost sense of camaraderie and warmth, and she found herself enjoying this wonderful moment of reunion.
However, this beautiful moment was soon interrupted. A brightly dressed young woman suddenly appeared beside them and said in a shrill voice, "Edward, so there you are! I've been looking for you for ages."
Alicia recognised the woman as Edward's cousin, Sophia Hart. Sophia had always had a soft spot for Edward and had looked at Alethea with disdain since she was a child.
Edward frowned, "Sophia, I'm dancing with Alicia."
Sophia bristled in disbelief, "Oh really? I thought you were just fulfilling a little social obligation. After all, Alicia's status right now ......" She deliberately trailed off, a glint of malice in her eyes.
Alicia felt a tingle, knowing that Sophia was alluding to the decline of her family's status.
Edward's expression became serious, "Sophia, please watch your words. Alicia is my best friend."
Sophia said reluctantly, "But Edward, you should be with someone more suited to your status. Someone like Alicia is now unworthy..."
Before she could finish her words, she was coldly interrupted by Edward, "Enough, Sophia. Your behaviour is unbecoming. Please leave immediately, or I will call security to handle this matter."
Sophia paled, unable to believe that Edward would speak to her like this for Alicia. She gave Alicia a vicious glare before turning and leaving the dance floor.
Edward turned to Alethea with an apologetic look in his eyes, "I'm sorry, Alethea. Sophia she..."
Alicia shook her head and forced a smile, "It's okay, I understand. Thank you for speaking up for me, Edward. You've been a great friend."
A flicker of loss flashed in Edward's eyes, but it was quickly masked. He smiled and said, "That's the way it should be. Let's keep dancing."
And with that, they settled into the melody of the dance floor once again. Alicia felt the warmth of a long-lost friendship, and she was grateful to have a good friend like Edward. Edward, on the other hand, sighed in his heart; he knew that his feelings for Alicia were much more than friendship, but he also understood that now was probably not the best time to reveal his heart.
The music faded to a halt and Edward gently let go of Alicia, but still held her hand. He looked deeply into her eyes and whispered, "Alicia, I'm so happy to see you again."
Alicia smiled sincerely, "Me too, Edward. I am so happy to be reunited with you."
After the dance ended, Edward gently let go of Alicia's hand and said gently, "It's a little stuffy on the dance floor, shall we go out on the balcony to get some air?"
Alicia nodded and smiled, "Sure, just what I need to take a break."
The two made their way through the bustling crowd to the balcony of the ballroom. Alicia felt a rush of refreshment as the cool night air brushed against her cheeks. She took a deep breath and let the fresh air fill her lungs, as if to sweep away the dry heat of the party on the dance floor.
The balcony was adorned with elegant flowers and vines that looked stunning in the soft light. In the distance, the city was lit up, the stars shining like diamonds scattered across the velvety night sky.
Edward leaned against the railing of the balcony and looked at Alicia with soft eyes. The moonlight splashed on her face, adding a layer of hazy beauty to her. He couldn't help but say, "Alicia, you really look beautiful tonight."
Alicia smiled and turned to him, "Thank you, Edward. You're also very handsome tonight." She paused, then continued, "Honestly, I'm glad I met you tonight. Over the years, I've often thought about our days as children."
Edward's eyes flashed with joy, "Me too. Those days are some of my most cherished memories." He paused for a moment, as if organising his words, "Alicia, I've been meaning to ask you, how have you been doing all these years? I heard that after your father's death, the family has encountered some difficulties ......"
Alysia's expression was slightly bleak, but she quickly regained her composure. She said softly, "It is true that we have encountered some problems. After father's death, there were disputes over some of our family's assets, coupled with some unsuspecting people taking advantage of the opportunity to drop stones, the situation was once very bad."
Edward asked with concern, "What about now? Has the situation improved?"
Alicia smiled faintly, "Fortunately, my mother and I have been working hard all these years. It's not as good as it used to be, but we've made it through the toughest times. I've just recently inherited shares in the company and will be attending company meetings in a few days as the ceo of the Stewart Group."
Edward admired her, "Alicia, you are so strong. I've always believed in your ability to get through this. If you need any help, please do let me know."
Alicia looked at him gratefully, "Thank you, Edward. You've been a great friend."
At the word 'friend', a hint of loss flashed in Edward's eyes, but he quickly hid it. He changed the topic and said, "By the way, do you remember the tree we planted in the back garden of your house when we were kids?"
Alicia's eyes lit up, "Of course I remember! That cherry tree! We promised to taste our first cherry together when it bore fruit."
Edward smiled, "I didn't think you remembered. I actually went back a while ago to see it, and that tree is now very tall and full of beautiful cherry blossoms every spring."
Alicia said in surprise, "Really? I wish I could see it again."
Edward hesitated for a moment, then plucked up the courage to say, "If you have the time, maybe we could go see it together? Think of it as reliving some childhood memories."
Alicia smiled and nodded, "Yeah, we'll definitely go see it when we have the chance."
The two were lost in their memories, and neither spoke for a while. A gentle breeze brought the faint scent of flowers from the garden.
After a while, Edward said softly, "Alicia, I'm so happy to have met you tonight. All these years, I have been..."
Just then, a waiter came out onto the balcony and respectfully said to Alicia, "Miss Stewart, your mother is looking for you."
Alicia looked at Edward somewhat apologetically, "I'm sorry Edward, I have to go see what my mother wants."
Edward nodded, "That's okay, go ahead. Call me anytime if you need me."
Alicia smiled gratefully before following the attendant off the balcony. Edward looked at her departing back, his eyes filled with complex emotions. He sighed deeply and turned to look at the distant night scene, his mind filled with thoughts.
Alicia followed the waiter back to the banquet hall and quickly found her mother, Eleanor. However, the scene she saw caused her heart to tighten. Her mother, Eleanor, was talking to several noblewomen, but with a hard look on her face.As Alicia approached, she heard the unpleasant dialogue."Oh, Eleanor dear," said a lady in a fancy gown in a hypocritically sweet tone, "you are trying so hard. And trying to find some social opportunities for Alicia, how... lovely."Another lady picked up, "Yes, Eleanor. But you have to realise that things are... It's not the same as it used to be. After all, with Aaron gone, your positions... You understand."Alicia saw a flash of pain on her mother's face, but Eleanor quickly hid it, still maintaining her elegant smile."Our family's position remains strong," Eleanor said calmly, "and Alicia has inherited her father's talent and charm. I am sure she will have a bright future.""Oh Eleanor, you're always so naive," the third lady sighed falsely, "Do
"Look at that, what a touching scene," Maria said conspiratorially, "Our little Alethea has finally found someone to lean on."Elizabeth sneered, "Yeah, didn't think she had it in her. Edward Hart is a rare golden master, I wonder what tricks she used to hook up."Alicia felt a surge of anger rise up, but she forced herself to remain calm. She gracefully straightened Edward's jacket, then looked directly at the two elders, her tone calm and firm:"Dear Aunt Maria, Aunt Elizabeth, I understand your curiosity about my friendship with Edward. However, I must correct your misconceptions. Edward and I grew up together, and our relationship is pure and genuine, and in no way is it the kind of relationship you have IMAGINARY."Maria grunted dismissively, "Don't pretend, Alicia. After your father's death, your family's status was in tatters. Now that you're suddenly so close to the Hart family's second son, aren't you just trying to climb up the power ladder?"Alicia smiled faintly, a hint of
When the ambulance arrived, both Alicia and Eleanor were in a coma. Paramedics carefully extracted them from the warped car and quickly transported them to the nearest hospital. In the hospital, Eleanor woke up earlier. Despite the pain all over her body, she insisted on visiting her daughter. With the doctor's persuasion, she reluctantly agreed to undergo the necessary tests and treatment first."Mrs Stewart, your injuries are not serious, but you need to rest," the attending doctor said seriously, "Your daughter's situation is more complicated and she is still in the intensive care unit. We are doing our best to save her."Eleanor's heart was like a knife, and she couldn't stop the tears from flowing down, "Please, you must save my daughter!"Meanwhile, in a luxurious villa on the other side of the city, William and Richard were raising their glasses in celebration."The plan went well," William said smugly, "That ungrateful girl should have shut up for good."Richard nodded, a sini
Over the next few days, Alicia's hospital room became a small parlour. Family, friends and business associates came to visit. Everyone acted concerned and friendly, but Alicia always felt a little uncomfortable. She began to scrutinise the expressions, words and actions of each visitor, trying to pick up clues.William and Richard were among the first relatives to visit. They brought expensive gifts and hypocritical care."Dear niece," William said with a beaming smile, "we are so happy to see you safe and sound."Richard nodded in agreement, "Yes, we were all terrified. I heard you lost some of your memories?"Alicia was keenly aware of the looks exchanged by her uncles. She decided to act like she knew nothing about the details of the crash." The doctor said it was normal and that it might take a while for your memory to fully return."William and Richard looked relieved. They exchanged a few more pleasantries and excused themselves, leaving Alicia alone with her thoughts. She was b
Eleanor was silent for a moment, then held her daughter's hand, "Alicia, this is truly an amazing change. But no matter what happens, you are my daughter. We will face this new challenge together."Alicia looked at her mother gratefully and a warmth welled up in her heart. With her mother's support, she felt more confident to face the uncertainty of the future. However, Alicia soon realised that this ability could be the key to uncovering the truth about the crash. She begins to carefully recall every detail of the night of the incident, trying to identify any clues that may have been overlooked. At the same time, she begins to use this ability to prepare herself for the future. She read a great deal of business and legal literature, committing complex concepts and terms to memory. She knew that knowledge was power in the coming struggle. One day, when Edward came to visit, Alicia decided to reveal the secret to him as well. She believed in Edward's loyalty and needed an ally she coul
Early morning sunlight poured in through the soaring glass walls of the Stewart Building, casting a soft golden glow over the boardroom. The spacious oval conference table was surrounded by executives in suits, who talked in low voices and glanced at the door from time to time, waiting for the main character of the day to arrive. The door was suddenly pushed open, and all eyes focused on the figure that walked slowly in. Alicia Stewart, the young heiress, stood there, her gaze firmly scanning the room. She wore a well-tailored dark blue suit that framed her slender figure. The trademark long blonde hair was neatly coiled behind her head, accentuating her angular yet soft face.Despite her long hospitalisation, Alicia looked refreshed, with a faint smile on her face and a glint of wisdom in her eyes. She walked gracefully over to the main seat, nodding her head gently in greeting before taking her seat."Good morning, everyone." Alicia's voice was clear and confident, "It is a pleasure
Alice was lost in thought when she suddenly heard the sound of soft footsteps behind her. She turned around and saw Robert Hudson, a senior figure in the company and a close friend of her father who had passed away."Excellent performance, Alice," Robert smiled, his eyes shining with approval and a hint of concern. "Your father would be proud of you."Alice smiled back, "Thank you, Robert uncle. I was just doing my best."Robert walked over to her and whispered, "Be careful, child. Your performance today was excellent, but it will also make some people uneasy. William and Richard won't give up their control of the company easily."Alice nodded, her expression becoming serious. "I know. But I have to do it for my father and the company."Robert patted her shoulder, "I'll do whatever I can to support you. But you'll need more allies. Remember, in the business world, information is power."Just then, Alice's assistant rushed in. "Sorry to interrupt, Miss Alice. The finance department jus
Alice sat in her father's study, surrounded by files and ledgers. The sunlight streaming through the half-open blinds on the window cast shadows on the floor, creating a pattern of light and darkness. The room was filled with a faint smell of leather and old books, reminding her of the days when her father taught her to read. The room had always been a sacred place for her father, and even after his death, Alice rarely entered it. But now, in search of the truth, she had to break this taboo. Her fingers gently caressed a thick ledger, which she had found in her father's safe. The safe was hidden in a secret compartment behind the bookshelf, and Alice might never have discovered it if she had not accidentally bumped into the mechanism. Her heart raced as she opened the safe, not knowing what secrets it would reveal.Opening the yellowed pages, she saw a string of numbers and company names. Alice frowned, the transfer records were complex and suspicious, involving several companies name
