Jackie has never seen Luke more concerned, but she didn’t have the mental capacity to think about it more. All she could think about was the hole in her stomach and the revenge she would have on Adrik. Laura rushed over with a heart, and Luke stopped her as she approached, “No! She has never had a fresh heart; it’s against the law, and we don’t know how she will react to it.”

“I don’t care, Luke! She is losing too much blood, and she is not healing fast enough. She needs to eat this, or she could die!”

He turned to look at Jackie, her face quickly draining of color, and looked at her with affection. Hardening his resolve, he spoke to her with no bravado or teasing. “This is going to be different than anything you have felt so far. I need you to trust me and eat this.”

Jackie was slightly disgusted by eating a raw heart, but was quickly swayed by the excruciating pain and the way they were looking at her. So trusting him, she took the heart and bit into it. There was an explosion of sensations that burst through her. She almost convulsed, but the tensing of her muscles and the animalistic reaction to the heart held it back. She devoured the heart before her own actions could repulse her. She felt like the air was made of static electricity, the fur on her body stood up, and she almost purred.

Then, suddenly, a shock went through her, and her vision went white. She saw flashes of red eyes and faces she didn’t recognize and felt anger and pain, and fear, so much fear she felt like she was choking on it. Then another flash, and she saw a face, then another flash, and she saw her own feral face, then nothing. Another white flash, and she was standing up, feeling like everything was in slow motion. She felt no more pain; the skin on her abdomen was completely healed and smooth. She felt high, alive, and alert. Because of her heightened senses, she easily noticed how tense Luke and Laura were as they watched her. Their comforting ocean scent was changed slightly; there was a hint of a storm, and her instincts told her they were scared. Her heart was beating slow and steady as she took a breath and licked her lips.

“Um, why are you guys looking at me like that?”

Luke was the first to speak, “Jackie, I have seen people eat a fresh heart before to survive, or for a quick burst of power. But what you just did was something else. You’re completely healed, and I think you glowed a little.”

Laura kept staring at Jackie’s healed stomach and said, “Maybe this is the power of one of her bloodlines. What do you feel?”

Jackie, looking down and feeling her new skin, said, “I think I just saw his memories. I saw my own face from his perspective. And I feel amazing, honestly. Does that make me a freak?”

Luke’s eyes softened and turned teasing, “Yes, Petit Chaton, it does.” Jackie glared at him and was about to say something snarky, but was cut off when Luke moved to touch where there should have been a hole in her stomach as he said, “But at least you are alive. A living freak.” The words were rude and teasing, but the way he was touching and looking at her was saying something else entirely. With her heightened senses from the heart still lingering, her skin sparked to life everywhere he touched, overwhelming her. His hands were still lingering and moving to examine her stomach when a quiet moan escaped her. Mortified, her eyes shot up to him, and she gripped his wrist to stop his hand from roaming any further. “I think that’s enough for now. I’m clearly okay. Can we just get out of here?” Laura cleared her throat, catching their attention and pulling them out of their trance. Luke stepped back, flexing his hand as Laura said, “Yes, go call this into our cleaners, Luke. I’ll look after her for now. We need to figure out how they found Jackie.”

Jackie came to a screeching halt, her heart pounding as she frantically looked around. There was no way she had outrun Laura. Laura wouldn’t just disappear. Struggling to steady her breathing, she reached for her phone. Before she could unlock it, the screen lit up with an incoming call from Luke.“Luke! Something—”“SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH LAURA! WHERE ARE YOU?!”Jackie’s blood ran cold. “How did you know? I’ll drop a pin with my location.”“Okay, I’m on my way!”“WAIT,” But he hung up before she could ask anything else. She quickly shared her location, and just as she hit send, a sharp, brutal force struck the back of her head. The impact made her vision explode with stars, her body nearly giving out beneath her. She stumbled to her knees, hissing in pain. Before she could rise, another blow sent her sprawling, and a black sack was yanked over her head, cinched tightly at her neck. It was dark, and disorientating, and all Jackie could feel was the rough jostling of a moving vehicle

Jackie stopped in the doorway, frozen. She hadn’t seen her dad since he dropped Andrea off at her place before Uni started. Since the attack, she had been avoiding long conversations with him, unwilling to face what she knew was coming. She could only imagine how the situation looked to him. Andrea was healing, wounded and fragile, while Jackie looked better than she ever had. It was cruel in a way, the way fate had drawn its lines. Unable to breathe, she just stared at him.‘He’s not my father. Does he know? He’s never mistreated me. I know he loves me. But I don’t want to deal with this. I just wanted to see Andrea…’“Jackie. You’re really okay!” Her father’s voice broke through her thoughts, thick with emotion. Before she could react, he was rushing toward her, pulling her into a tight embrace. She stood stiffly in his arms, caught off guard. She had expected anger, maybe coldness, but not this relief.Despite herself, she hugged him back, her throat tightening as the weight of it

Jackie was getting really tired of waking up in this blue room. The walls, a muted shade of dusk, seemed to press in on her more with each passing day. It had been a week since she last saw her sister, and there had been no change in her condition. The waiting gnawed at her, a restless ache beneath her ribs. Thankfully, her new boss at Katze Group had been understanding of her situation and pushed back her start date without hesitation. Luke and Laura were still wary of letting her out of their sight again after she had escaped them before. But after what she could only describe as an intensive education, they’d finally eased up, allowing her a sliver of freedom. That didn’t mean her life had gotten any easier. Between finishing her last online class for school and cramming an entire history lesson about a world she hadn’t even known existed, she was drowning in information. And as if that wasn’t enough, she had to learn how to control her new power. Much to her frustration, control

Jackie waits motionless by the locked door, holding her breath, straining her ears, listening until she is sure they are gone. Only then does she allow herself to move, rummaging through the room until she finds her phone. A wave of relief washes over her; there is half a charge left. A dozen missed calls and unread messages flash across the screen, but she shoved the phone into her pocket without reading them. Not yet, not until she can read them without interruption. Every sound felt like a gunshot in the silence as she stepped toward the window, her breath shallow, her limbs trembling with anticipation.Holding her breath, she eased the window open. The night air rushed in, cool and crisp. A floorboard groaned outside her door. Her pulse spikes, and her body responds to her anxiety and her desire to escape. She dropped below the window frame and lowered herself into a low crouch. She had a moment to notice the graceful change she felt in her body. Before she could contemplate her b

‘Drowning. I am drowning again, but now it's all blood. Where is Andrea?! I have to get back to her! But I can’t breathe. Where is the surface?!’Jackie gasped awake, trembling and exhausted. Her body felt like it had been hit by a train. Her breath came in ragged gulps, her chest tightening with panic. She didn’t recognize where she was. The last thing she remembered was lying in a pool of blood, dirt clinging to her skin as she reached for her sister. But now, she was in a bed that was soft, warm, and unfamiliar. The room around her was cozy, painted a pale, serene blue. It wasn’t a hospital, and it wasn’t a jail cell. Swallowing against the dryness in her throat, she tried out her voice, remembering how it sounded so foreign the night before.“Where the hell am I?”A voice answered, making her nearly jump out of her skin.“You are currently in my guest room.”Jackie turned, eyes locking onto one of the most striking women she had ever seen. She was graceful, almost ethereal, with l
