MasukSimone was almost in tears. She couldn’t believe how lucky she was to have landed a job so last minute, and at William’s company no less.
But it still didn’t solve her rent issue.
She thought hard before giving her landlady a call.
The elderly woman picked up soon, and greeted her amicably, “Hello Simone, how have you been?”
“I have been better to be honest,” she retorted without missing a beat, preparing to tell her she needed to have the deadline extended. She was hopeful for she usually never missed.
“Yes… that, I believe. I am sorry I couldn’t attend the funeral, sweetheart. My deepest condolences,” old Mrs Atkins’ response made tears fill her eyes for they had the knack to open back her wound.
Simone wouldn’t dare to cry though, not right then.
She got her sh*it together within a few seconds before saying, without so much as a sniffle, “Thank you. I called to tell you I will be late in paying the rent this month. I am truly sorry, but I will do my best to pay you in about 2 weeks.”
“Rent?” The woman echoed after her, her tone quite incredulous. “Your brother took care of that last week. He paid for 3 months upfront.”
Simone let out a stunned “oh” for she didn’t know. She was moved to tears a second time, but for a good reason this time around.
As always, William never failed to be there for her, even without her needing to ask.
It was endearingly sweet, and yet maddening at the same time, seeing as he didn’t view her as a woman, but as the young teen he met so many years ago.
Get your mind out of the gutter, woman, she told herself after a moment.
“Simone? Are you there?”
“Yes, sorry, I was just trying to recall if my step brother told me about that,” she lied through her teeth, for she couldn’t possibly tell the elderly woman all the naughty thoughts going through her head.
“Tall, unmistakably handsome, and with the most expressive eyes I have ever seen. I even jotted down his name – William Stone,” the woman insisted.
“That’s him alright,” Simone giggled nervously. “Well, thank you for letting me know. I won’t keep you much longer.”
“I am glad he’s kind to you, for you only have each other.”
“Thank you, Mrs Atkins.”
“Anytime,” the elderly woman replied, and then soon hung up.
Simone still had a hard time believing that William had paid upfront for 3 months for a moment after the call. That had to be hands down the most valuable gift ever!
He cared for her in a way only a brother knew how. But Mrs Atkins had it all wrong. If one were to view them legally, they could be mistaken for strangers. And yet, he was her emergency contact. He was the person she looked up to the most, and possibly the most unattainable man she knew.
Nevertheless, this chance to work as his PA was golden, and she would be an idiot to mess it up. Simone needed to have an emergency fund for rainy days. Besides, she reasoned that maybe seeing his renowned ruthless business ways would make her infatuation go away.
Oh, how wrong she was… She just didn’t know it yet.

Waking up at 6:30 am as per usual wasn’t an issue for Simone. But her breakfast routine was disrupted a little. She used to take her time. Today, she had to rush it.
Needless to say that she put on her best formal outfit, styled her hair in an updo, so that it wouldn’t be a bother to her during work, and was soon leaving her apartment.
She had only had time for pale pink lipstick, and that was fine by her, for that had been the most important make-up step to her for years.
Today, rushed as she had been, she felt alive. She felt like she could breathe again, no doubt because her problematic rent had been taken care of, but also because she wouldn’t have to worry about her other expenses.
She wouldn’t admit it openly, but she ws giddy with excitement as she arrived at the building where she would have to work as the CEO’s PA.
She knew the job came with a lot of responsibilities, and she knew she ought to be capable of handling them, if only her mind decided to cooperate – and not be down in the gutter as always.
The receptionist soon welcomed her with a smile as she stepped into the company for the first time in years. The last time she was here, she had insisted on taking him out for a meal for his birthday… only for him to foot the bill at the end, with a glare towards her as she handed her card to the waiter.
“If you won’t let me pamper you, I will feel old,” he had told her.
The receptionist was speaking, and she wasn’t paying much attention. But she could naturally guess her question.
“I am here as the new CEO’s PA. My name is Simone Preston,” she told her in a soft tone of voice.
The woman nodded at her in earnest, the smile never leaving her face, “Please give me a moment.”
A phone call was all it took before Simone was ushered towards the elevator, where she was told to head to the 23rd floor.
Simone gave herself the pep talk of a lifetime before the elevator opened again. She was stepping into unfamiliar territory, and she felt like it might be a dangerous one too.
Pinching her cheeks so she wouldn’t look sick, which she no longer was, she was soon leaving the elevator, and getting greeted by the man who haunted her daydreams himself.
It was but a mild surprise to her though. She knew he and his PA were the only ones to use the floor after all… She just hadn’t expected him to wait for her by the elevator.
“Right on time,” was his cool greeting.
“I wouldn’t want to disappoint,” she told him cheekily.
His answer was a bewitching smirk, and already she could imagine the issues that would follow.
Simone’s anxiety made it hard for her to enjoy the massage, even though she could hear Colette sigh and hum contently every minute or so. The massage was no doubt delightful, but her thoughts, which seemed to spiral out of control, didn’t allow her to feel peaceful.Indeed, the mere thought that she might be pregnant ruined her mood. Before long, as they were ushered to the salon for their blow-dry, she could no longer remain still or calm. She needed to know, the sooner, the better.“I’m going to hit the drugstore,” she declared as she rose to her feet, and Colette looked at her with puzzlement in her eyes.“What for?” Her best friend asked, a little bit of a frown marring her face.“I’ll be right back,” Simone told her with a reassuring smile, although she herself was panicking beyond words, and then made a beeline to
The following weeks went by, like a blur, uneventful and yet packed. Work was busy after all.Simone and Colette had decided to get a spa treatment for their monthly get-together. They made the booking at a popular, albeit affordable, place for the whole package; meaning they were not only getting a hammam and a full-body massage, but also their hair done.Simone was pumped about it, and agreed to meet her best friend there, at 10 am sharp. And because she was as unlucky as they came, she stumbled upon the Summers sisters. They had just emerged from a nearby shop, of which the mere brand name suggested they were there to spend a fortune. How typical! She did her best to ignore them, act as if she hadn’t seen them, and was just about ready to go inside the spa, when Carla let out in a mocking tone of voice, “Well, if it isn’t the gold digger herself.”Simon
“I honestly cannot understand those women,” Simone let out in a tone of mild dejection as she leaned against William’s frame, on their ride back to the penthouse that evening.Indeed, she didn’t understand the purpose of their scheming. Sure, they fancied William, but did they really think that was the way to a man’s heart?Admittedly, Simone didn’t really know what William saw in her to begin with, but that was not the point.“And why would you want to understand them, Angel?” He chuckled, his gaze as tender as ever, settling over her face lovingly, when she knew all too well how it could act like a sensual caress at times. “If you must know, Carla Summers had a thing for me.”“Has a thing for you,” she corrected without missing a beat.“When her father and I were on a business trip, many year
Carla Summers belonged to the elite, la crème de la crème, as some would put it. And if her mannerisms were any indication, the woman was rarely ever told no. She was an entitled trust fund baby, with more power among her circle than she should probably have — thanks to her late grandfather’s influence.“Well, if it isn’t the gold digger herself,” the woman let out, her tone biting and full of unmistakable venom.“Well, if it isn’t the haughty trust fund baby,” Simone rolled her eyes, not quite in the mood to deal with her.“Why, you little…!” The woman all but exploded, having no doubt expected Simone to be meek and all smiles, even as she took insults. “Know your place.”That one stung, if Simone was honest, but she didn’t let it show on her face, and had a ready response for that.“I do
Stepping out of the luxurious sedan, William soon reached out a hand to help Simone out of the vehicle. She plastered a commercial and frigid smile on her face, and soon followed him.Cameras flashed, but she paid them absolutely no mind, attentive as she was to the man she loved, smiling up at him. He had told her on the car ride to only focus on him. Doing so, it seemed like she managed to dismiss the cameras and the unwanted attention as if it were nonexistent. Many questions were fired at him, which Simone didn’t quite hear — as if it were simply noise — for she was completely focused on her beloved’s eyes, no matter what the onlookers might think. Sure, she was head over heels with him, but she was also desperate not to make any faux-pas.“Nothing to say,” he iced out, and there was a collective sigh, from the reporters, as he began to walk, with his security detail helping.
Simone was at a beauty salon that had quite the reputation – La Fashionista. They usually tended to the elite, and always made sure their clients left people in awe.She didn’t think she had what it took to be stunning. The salon didn’t have any mirrors hung on its walls, and it was difficult to guess what they were going for. She wasn’t one to do heavy make-up usually, but William told her to trust them.Hell, he even seemed to know the main make-up artist, who chatted him up sweetly, “This is your first time bringing someone here… Dare I hope you’re finally settling down?”“She has me wrapped around her little finger,” he admitted easily.Simone was sure that he knew what he was doing. After all, making such a confession in a beauty salon — no matter how discreet they claimed to be — was a sure way to have this spread among the elite. It seemed like he truly wanted the whole world to know he was happily taken.“And he doesn’t seem annoyed by that, people,” she let out in a tone of t
It was Sunday morning when William received a call from his uncle. He naturally expected a good berating, and maybe some lamenting too… And he knew his uncle would deliver, given the chance.“How could you ruin everything your father worked for?” He bellowe
Chinese food was good, but it was even better when there was someone to share it with. Sharing truly was caring after all.Simone and William mostly ate in silence, save for the occasional, “Oh, this is so good!” or “You should try this.”William’s mind was elsewhere, however, as he thought of his
William was conflicted. He didn’t know whether hiding the truth from his sweet angel was a good idea, but he knew he didn’t want to lose her over a deal made a decade ago. They were about to call it a day when Simone popped in, as bubbly as ever. Her radiant smile, as always, had the knack to bring
The storm indeed came. And it had a name too. Liam Stone was William’s uncle, and if the latter had nerves of steel, the former was a man who had infuriating retorts. His eyes, the same shade of brown as William, lacked warmth. Moreso, it felt like he knew more than he let on.Simone knew him from
