Beneath The Surface

By morning, word of the throne hall had already outpaced me through the palace.

I could hear it in the way conversations stopped as I passed — servants lowering their voices mid-sentence, some dipping into a respectful bow, others stealing quick glances before returning to whatever task kept their hands busy. Nothing anyone said reached me directly, but I didn’t need to hear the words themselves to understand that *the King’s mysterious guest* had become a phrase circulating well ahead of my own footsteps.

A polished, composed woman found me before midday — the chief lady-in-waiting, someone explained to me, of considerable standing among the court’s older circles. She invited me to afternoon tea with a warmth that felt genuine on its surface and entirely deliberate underneath it.

The gathering looked informal enough — a handful of noblewomen, delicate cups, quiet conversation drifting between polite laughter. But every question, however gently phrased, seemed built to learn something specific.

“Where were you raised, dear?”

“Who taught you your manners? You carry yourself so composedly.”

“What do you believe makes a good ruler?”

I answered honestly, careful never to claim more certainty than I actually had. I told them the truth where I could give it, admitted ignorance where I couldn’t, and watched several of them exchange small, unreadable glances over the rims of their teacups. I couldn’t tell yet whether I’d passed whatever test this had been, or simply postponed it.

Elsewhere in the palace, Rowan met privately with the king.

“The houses are already choosing positions,” Rowan said. “Some are willing to give her a chance. Others oppose her outright. Most are simply waiting to see where the power settles before committing to anything.”

The king absorbed this without visible concern. “Then let them watch.”

“You won’t push for their support?”

“Respect forced is respect that breaks the moment it’s tested,” the king said. “If it’s going to mean anything at all, it has to grow on its own.”

I remembered the librarian’s kindness that afternoon and made my way to the archives, glad for a room that didn’t seem to be quietly evaluating me.

He welcomed me exactly as warmly as before, delighted to have company among his shelves. As we talked, drifting between old records and older stories, he mentioned, almost in passing, that certain royal documents had vanished from the archives many years back.

“Lost, I assume?” I asked.

He considered the question longer than it seemed to deserve.

“Sometimes history isn’t lost,” he said. “Sometimes it’s hidden.”

I opened my mouth to ask what he meant, but the archive door opened before I could, footsteps announcing someone else’s arrival, and the librarian’s expression smoothed back into pleasant ordinariness so quickly I might have imagined the weight behind his words entirely.

-----

Late that night, far from where I slept, Lord Aldren broke the seal on a letter delivered to his private chambers.

He read it in silence, his expression giving nothing away to the empty room around him.

*The pendant has been confirmed.*

He held the letter to the candle beside him and watched it curl into ash, dropping the last corner before the flame could reach his fingers.

He stood at his window afterward, looking out toward the part of the palace where guests were housed, and said quietly, to no one at all:

“So it has finally begun.”

  • The Luna My Alpha Regrets Losing   The First Opposition

The morning after I settled into the palace, an invitation arrived to observe a formal audience in the throne hall.“Nobles use these gatherings to advance their own interests,” Rowan warned as we walked toward it. “Watch closely. Listen twice as much as you speak.”I nodded, though I suspected I’d have done that anyway. Silence had served me better than words in every room I’d entered since the forest.-----The throne hall was already crowded by the time we arrived — nobles in fine layered robes, military officers standing at rigid attention, diplomats murmuring quietly among themselves. The king sat listening to petition after petition, and I watched him give each one his full, careful attention regardless of how small or large the matter seemed. He was fair. That much was obvious even to someone who’d known him only a few weeks. But fairness, I was learning, never satisfied everyone equally — every decision he made left someone in that hall a little more discontent than they’d wal

  • The Luna My Alpha Regrets Losing   A palace Of Secrets

A steward led me through the royal residence to a suite prepared, she said, for honored guests. It was beautiful in a way that had nothing to do with me. Tall windows looked out over the city, silver tapestries hung along the walls, shelves held books whose spines had gone soft with age, and fresh flowers sat arranged in a vase that someone must have filled that very morning, before they even knew what I looked like.I appreciated the care that had gone into it. I still felt, standing in the middle of it, like a guest wearing someone else’s life for the evening.-----Walking the corridors afterward, I started to understand what the High Priestess had meant.Servants moved constantly, messages passed hand to hand, guards changed posts in quiet, practiced rotations. Courtiers fell silent whenever I approached, conversations dying mid-sentence, only to pick back up the moment I’d passed far enough not to hear how they ended.*The palace remembers everything,* she’d said. I was beginning

  • The Luna My Alpha Regrets Losing   The Council Of Wolves

The doors opened onto a hall so grand it took a moment to remember to breathe.Marble floors stretched out beneath chandeliers that caught and scattered light in every direction, and portraits of kings and queens long dead lined the walls, watching us pass with painted eyes that felt almost too attentive. Servants dropped into bows as we entered, quick and practiced — though I caught more than one of them glancing up again just enough to study me, curiosity slipping through the cracks of their composure.-----The king moved through it all with the same quiet authority he’d carried since the moment I’d first seen him on the battlefield. Courtiers stepped aside without needing to be asked.“This palace has stood for centuries,” Rowan murmured beside me as we walked. “Every wing belongs to a different branch of the crown’s administration. And nothing said inside these walls stays secret for long — remember that, wherever you go.”I filed the warning away carefully. I was learning, slowl

  • The Luna My Alpha Regrets Losing   The Gates Of Silverfang

The city grew larger with every step down from the ridge, until *large* stopped being an adequate word for it at all.Walls of pale silver stone rose higher than anything I’d ever stood beneath, stretching in both directions until they vanished into the haze. The gates themselves were iron, massive and engraved with wolves mid-stride, flanked by guards whose armor caught the last of the daylight in polished flashes. A long line of merchants and travelers and loaded wagons waited before the entrance, patient in the particular way of people used to being inspected before they were allowed anywhere.I didn’t ask questions. I watched instead, the way I’d learned to in the trial — taking in details before deciding what any of them meant.-----The gate captain’s eyes found the king first, and his expression shifted in the span of a single breath — routine boredom collapsing into something closer to disbelief. He dropped to one knee immediately. The guards nearest him followed within second

  • The Luna My Alpha Regrets Losing   Shadows That Follow

The sky turned heavy that morning, clouds pressing low over the old royal road, and the air itself seemed to carry more weight than usual.“The sky seems determined to travel with us,” Rowan said, glancing up at it without much humor behind the words.I almost smiled. Then I noticed the broken branches just off the road’s edge — snapped recently, not weathered — and horse tracks pressed into the softer ground nearby that didn’t match the rhythm of our own mounts at all. I pointed them out to the king without saying anything aloud, just a tilt of my head toward the marks. He crouched to examine them, quiet and thorough, and didn’t offer a conclusion. That silence unsettled me more than an answer would have.-----We stopped at a stream not long after to refill our waterskins, and that was when I felt it — not a sound, not a sight, just an absence where sound should have been. The forest around us had gone quiet in a way that didn’t match the hour or the season, the kind of quiet that m
