Pain.

Stabbing, throbbing and skin ripping pain that made her feel like there was a riot going on in her body..

It was all Sara knew now.

The punches had stopped a while ago, but the ache in her ribs still throbbed with every breath she took. Her left eye was swollen shut, her lips cracked, and the metallic taste of blood coated her tongue.

Sara lay on the cold, hard floor of the small wooden shed they had thrown her into like garbage. The place reeked of mold, rot, and smelly feet. A single window near the roof taunted her—too high to reach.

She curled in on herself, pressing her arms against her stomach to keep the pain from spreading.

Was this really happening?

Had they really beaten her just for being rejected?

A bitter laugh bubbled in her chest, but it hurt too much to let it out. Of course they had.

Through the thin wooden walls, she heard voices—familiar ones, mocking her.

Vanessa. And Quentin.

Sara squeezed her eyes shut, praying they would just go away.

“Oh, darling, we should thank the moon goddess for getting rid of that little pest,” Vanessa’s sugary voice drifted through the cracks.

Quentin chuckled. “She should be grateful I didn’t kill her on the spot.”

Vanessa sighed dramatically. “I just feel so bad for her, you know? No mate, no wolf… just a pathetic little orphan. She’ll never belong anywhere.”

Quentin hummed in agreement. “I did her a favor.”

If that were true, they wouldn’t have come all the way out here just to say it aloud. How could he act like what he’d done wasn’t cruel?

Vanessa giggled, and Sara could picture her flipping her perfect golden hair. “Well, at least now we can focus on our baby.”

“Can you imagine?” Vanessa’s voice dripped sweetness. “Our little pup growing up as the next Alpha of Soomdale? With two strong parents?”

Quentin’s voice was smug. “The strongest.”

Sara couldn’t take it anymore. She pressed her hands over her ears, but their voices still bled through the wood, piercing her skull and burrowing deep into her already shattered soul.

Eventually, they left. Or maybe she passed out—she wasn’t sure. All she knew was that she was alone again.

Alone with the memories.

******

FLASHBACK…

A younger Sara stood outside in the rain, soaked and trembling while her stepmother watched from the doorway.

“You’re not coming inside until you learn your place,” the woman had said.

Sara had shivered for hours before being let inside—not out of kindness, but because Vanessa had complained that she looked ugly dripping water on the floor.

She remembered her first attempt to shift.

She was twelve, excited because Vanessa had shifted that morning. Sara wanted to prove she wasn’t weak. But no matter how hard she tried, no matter how much she focused, her wolf never came.

That was the day Quentin first called her a failure. That was when the pack stopped seeing her as one of them.

And now… now she had nothing. No home. No pack. No future.

She had cried enough. No one was coming to save her.

*******

The door creaked open, and Sara flinched, bracing for another beating. But it wasn’t a warrior.

It was her stepmother.

The woman stepped inside, holding something in her hand; a piece of metal glowing red at the tip.

Sara swallowed hard. “What is that?”

Her stepmother smiled. “A lesson.”

Sara scrambled back, pressing herself against the wall. “Stay away from me!”

Her stepmother laughed loudly, her heels echoing against the floor. “Do you know what separates us from humans, Sara?” she asked, head tilted.

Sara didn’t respond.

“It’s our ability to heal,” the woman went on. “We can recover from almost anything. Even deep wounds fade within hours.”

She crouched down, face inches from Sara’s. “But you?” she whispered. “You don’t deserve that gift.”

Before Sara could react, her stepmother grabbed her wrist and pressed the hot iron to her skin.

Sara screamed. Agony ripped through her arm and into her bones. The scent of burning flesh choked the air.

She thrashed, kicked, begged, but the woman held her down with ease, watching her squirm like an insect.

“People like you don’t deserve to heal,” the woman murmured, pressing harder. “Next time, you won’t mess with my daughter.”

It was worse than the mate bond snapping. Worse than the beatings.

Sara couldn’t breathe. Then, suddenly, it was over.

The iron was pulled away. Her wrist dropped like discarded trash. She curled into herself, cradling her burned flesh, gasping for air.

Her stepmother stood, dusting off her hands.

“Don’t worry,” she said, smirking. “You won’t be around long enough to suffer much more.”

She turned on her heel and left, the door closing behind her.

Time passed, but Sara didn’t know how long. Minutes. Hours. Days? It didn’t matter.

The pain didn’t fade.

Her body ached from the beatings. Her heart ached from rejection. And her wrist… it would never heal properly. She could feel it in her bones.

She looked at it through blurry eyes. Raw, blackened, blistered. The stench made her gag.

She was going to die here. And maybe… maybe that was better.

No.

Sara sat up, cradling her wrist to her chest. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. They had taken everything else from her—she wouldn’t let them win.

She wouldn’t let Quentin and Vanessa live happily while she rotted away.

She had to leave.

Now.

She staggered to her feet, legs trembling beneath her.

Her vision swam, but she forced herself forward, stumbling toward the window. It was high, but not unreachable.

She spotted a wooden crate and dragged it over, biting back a cry as her wrist scraped against it. With her uninjured hand, she pulled herself up, gasping when she reached the ledge.

Cool night air rushed over her face, fresh and full of promise. She squeezed through the gap and fell onto the grass.

She didn’t stop.

Her legs carried her forward, pushed by pure will. She ran—hurt, bleeding, but refusing to stop.

She had no idea where she was heading. All she knew was she had to escape.

Because if they caught her...

They’d make sure she never got back up again.

  • The Luna's Cursed Mate    Chapter 028

Sara hadn’t known this kind of anxiety in a long time. Every morning she woke up hoping to see Kyle, to maybe ask him about the mess that was unfolding, and every morning, she didn’t. Days had passed and he remained unreachable, and whenever she saw him at all, it was only in passing. His eyes looked distant, he always had that faraway thinking look, or was surrounded by people who shared the same emotion in their eyes. It made her nervous. Terrified, even, especially because of them. And by them, she meant none other than Vanessa and Quentin. The ones who betrayed her, and then hung her out to dry. Just the thought of their names made her want to scream. After the death of one of their own especially, if they found out that she was here… she wouldn’t survive it. She just knew that. Her time in Soomsdale had taught her that people like them didn’t just threaten, but they acted as well. And when they did, it was always cruel. But even so, no one, not even them, could go toe-to-t

The moment Kyle went back into the hall, the noise of the place swallowed him. He couldn’t believe what had happened, it sounded more like a prank than an actual thing. But it was not a prank. People were already whispering and giving him strange looks like he was already proven guilty. He felt the urge to throw them a dirty look but decided not to. Kyle walked straight toward the centre of the room, where a small crowd had gathered around the collapsed body of Lord Frazer. “Step away from him.” He commanded. They obeyed instantly. The body of the man was pale, his mouth was slightly open, and his eyes were fixed and lifeless. This was terrible. How could someone had died at his event? Huntsman stood off to the side, and he couldn’t have looked more confused, and two other men stood guard, looking useless. Everyone looked shaken, but no one looked more furious than Kyle. “Alpha, we…”Kyle shot the speaker a glare, his eyes cold as ice, instantly silencing them. Then he tur

“Would you like to leave?” “Yes.” Sara said clearly. “I’d like to leave.” Kyle didn’t say anything for a moment. His eyes fell on the snobbish people in front of them, but his mind was made up. He got up and began walking. She followed quickly behind, her heels clicking against the polished floor. He reached the tall glass doors that led to the balcony and pushed them open with one smooth motion. She stepped out just behind him.The night air swept over her skin and she enjoyed the cool and calm of it. The moon hung above them beautifully in the dark here, casting silver lights across the stone railing and marble floor. She didn’t speak, neither did he. An attendant appeared from nowhere, giving a small bow. “Would you like a chair brought out, Alpha?” “Yes.” Kyle said, then looked at Sara. “Just one.” The attendant disappeared, then returned seconds later with a low, elegant chair. Kyle motioned to it. “Sit.” It didn’t sound like a command, and so she lowered herse

Sara took a step back, her glass trembling slightly in her hand. “No.” She said quickly, her voice firm. “I’m not available.” The man smiled, unfazed. He turned his head and took a step closer, closing the gap she had just created. “You’re really funny.” He said with a chuckle. “I like that. Keep the jokes coming.” She kept stepping back slowly, her heart beating fast in her chest. Her fingers itched to throw her drink in his face or break the glass over his head, but she didn’t want to cause a scene. “I don’t want to talk to you.” She said clearly, her eyes looking back to the crowd, hoping someone would intervene. He leaned in further, still smiling like he didn’t hear her. “Come on, don’t be like that. You’re clearly bored. Let me keep you entertained.” Sara opened her mouth to reply, but before she could, a strong hand slid around her waist, pulling her gently but firmly back. She gasped, startled, stiffening instantly, not daring to turn around. Then she heard the

Sara opened her eyes slowly, blinking against the light filtering through the curtains. Her head still ached faintly from last night’s confusion, and her chest felt like something had curled up and gone to sleep inside it. Her mind was full of questions. Questions about Tamara, about Kyle, and about herself. Was she going crazy? She turned to the side and paused. There were two boxes on the bed beside her. Both were neatly wrapped in matte silver paper and tied with thin black ribbon, and they sat there like gifts from someone who didn’t want to be thanked. A folded note rested on top of one. Sara’s brows creased as she sat up and picked it up. She opened it slowly, feeling nervous. -Christmas event by 12. Be there on time.- That was all. No greeting, no name, not even a smiley face. It was cold, clipped, and commanding. Underneath the paper was a pair of shoes and a necklace. Did Kyle send this? She wondered as her fingers curled slightly around the paper. Whoever sent th

It was nigh time and the only source of illumination came from the flickering candles on the stone walls and a single lamp at the center of the long, narrow table. Thick maps and folders were spread out across its surface, each one marked with red ink, black dots, and hastily scribbled notes. Kyle preferred it this way. This was an ultra-secret task, so he preferred to do it this way. He stood at the head of the table, tall and silent, his arms folded across his chest as he stared down at the map of their territory. His jaw was clenched tight and his eyes shot daggers. He didn’t like what he was seeing. He didn’t like any of it and more than anything, he wanted to put a stop to it. Tran, his war chief, was pacing slowly to the side, his heavy boots hitting the floor with quiet thuds. Huntsman, Kyle’s oldest advisor and most trusted mind, was seated to his right, flipping through a worn leather folder with narrowed eyes. Beside the door stood Kyle’s personal guard, the man silent a
