Sofia’s POV
The murmurs were everywhere. They weren’t whispers anymore, but open, bitter words slicing through me like claws and leaving me bleeding every single spot where they hit.
“Cursed,” one of the pack members yelled from his seat, but my head felt too heavy to turn around to check who it was.
But when I thought that was the worst of it, another person said. “She’s unnatural!”
“Lyla,” I called for my wolf pleadingly, but she was nowhere within reach, lost and buried deep inside me. I felt the resounding silence, how loud it screamed through me, and how bereft it left me. I needed her now more than ever, but she was nowhere within reach, broken because we had both been rejected.
“No wolf chooses to be silent unless the human is broken!” There was no denying how much this statement hurt.
I pulled myself off the floor, standing in the center of the room. Every bit of me felt seen, maybe too seen. I felt like an arrow could be tossed at me, and I would not stand a chance. There was hate at every angle, directed at me.
I wasn’t wanted here.
The pain in my chest spread insistently, becoming so physical that I almost doubled over. It was a thrumming ache that reverberated every time my heartbeat. I had been laid bare before the whole pack. I couldn’t call on my wolf. I was empty and now, everyone knew it.
The elders got off their seats at the same time, and my eyes followed their actions. The disgust on their faces was apparent, and their eyes didn’t waver, staring directly at me. Their aged gaze was filled with judgment and misplaced fear.
But all of those could have been ignored if I hadn’t seen the hatred too. That was what gave me my final judgment. I would never be welcome here. They all moved slowly, and I held my breath until they stopped in front of me, facing me like executioners.
“You are dangerous, Sofia!” One of them growled, his eyes flashing a darker shade of brown. A wrinkled finger was held up and pointed in my direction like I was some filth that needed to be taken out of sight.
“I don’t think I have ever seen such an imbalance in the natural order before,” someone else said, his tone sharp. “Where is your wolf, child?”
That was the best time to plead for mercy, but my tongue refused to listen to my brain. And even if it had, I doubted I could live under the same roof as Lucas and his bride. As if on cue, my eyes strayed in their direction, fury washing through me as I watched them gaze at each other affectionately.
The words of the elders seemed to get louder, ringing in my head and penetrating into my skin. “Layla.” My voice trembled as I tried one more time, reaching for her, and needing to feel her presence. “Please, say something. Don’t leave me too.”
Silence.
It was cold and hollow, and I refrained from wrapping my hand around my frame. I felt like a bottomless well and having the elders glaring at me wasn’t helping. Layla was gone, unable to take this hurt.
Tears blurred my vision and my hands shook in trepidation and hurt as I held on to the ball of my wedding dress. I questioned the truth of their accusations if I was really evil and a distortion of the normal. Maybe that was Lucas’ real reason for leaving me on our wedding day, for rejecting me before the whole pack.
I wasn’t sure why I was crying, if it was from the pain of having my mate get married to another person, or from everything the pack and its elders had just said. In the middle of the chaos, I heard that voice I had fallen in love every single day for a decade but was slowly beginning to lose its potency.
“Sofia.”
I jerked my head so fast that I heard a sharp crack in my neck. But it didn’t matter as my eyes locked onto his. Lucas stood tall, an air of authority about him, with his guards encircling him and Vivian.
I felt something claw at my chest from merely looking at him, but I couldn’t pull my gaze away. I regarded him intently, searching for something other than the resolution that stared right back at me. I looked for sympathy, remorse, and anything other than this rejection.
But there was nothing.
My legs shook again, but I wasn’t going to fall to the ground a second time. My dignity had long abandoned me, but I still had to face this moment. “Lucas,” I said, my voice coming out as a whisper. “Is this really your decision?”
He didn’t blink, as he replied in a low and masculine voice, sounding detached from every emotion. “Take your life seriously, Sofia. You have heard the elders and the pack. They are ready to burn you alive because they believe that you are a curse to the pack. And I cannot stop them if you don’t leave this minute.”
This was it. The man I was fated to by the moon goddess, the one who had promised me the most memorable mating ceremony, had just uttered that he wanted nothing to do with me.
I looked around, foolishly hoping that one of the pack members would stand up for me since they had watched me for a decade with Lucas. But the eyes that stared back at me were either filled with indifference or fear.
They didn’t want to cross Alpha Lucas after he had already given firm instructions. Nodding, I turned around and started my way out of the hall, trying so hard not to look back. Because if I did, I knew I would beg Lucas again, and I couldn’t stand the look on Vivian’s face.
“Sofia!” Evelyn’s voice pierced through the noisy crowd and I turned only to see her following behind me, breaking through the line of pack members that had gathered. She ran to cover the remaining space, but two guards appeared from nowhere, stopping her.
“I’m going with her!” she snapped, trying to get past them. “Move.”
One of the guards looked toward Lucas before returning his gaze to her. “I’m afraid you cannot…”
Evelyn didn’t wait for him to finish his words as she turned sharply and walked briskly back to Lucas. In that split second, I thought my best friend had nine lives.
“If you have authority over Sofia,” she started, holding her shoulders square and her head high. “What gut do you have to stop me from following her? Do I look like her to you?”
Sofia's POV"Your beauty shines like the sun in the sky," Grandma said as she entered my room without knocking. Like who does that. "You never change. You're just like your mother. But I was just too blind to see that the very first time I saw you," she added and sat on the bed with me. I was sitting on the bed with my back resting against the wall. "Grandma, at least you should have knocked," I said with a calm tone. She acted like I never said anything."Do you know when your mother gave birth to you? You were just crying when we wanted to exchange you," she said. I looked at her and felt like sending her out of my room but I held back. "Oh, really good," I smirked. "It was a very long time ago," she said and stopped for some minutes before she continued. "Your mother kept giving birth to females, and after some weeks they felt sick and died." She said. This time around I was focused because I thought I was interested in the story. "Is that the reason why you exchanged me?" I
Chapter Thirty eight. Sofia's POVI walked in like an angry wolf and slammed the door. "How could this have happened! What's wrong with all of them," I asked no one in particular. I ran to the bathroom to take a shower. Maybe my head would calm down a little bit. I came out after some minutes and changed my dress.Just then, I heard a knock on my door. I ignored it and focused on myself in the mirror. "Please open the door," the voice said from outside. "You have all the right to be angry, but you shouldn't take it to heart. It will hurt you more than you think," the same voice said from outside.I managed to open the door not because I was ready to talk to the person but because I didn't want to sleep with a lot of questions in my head. "My princess," Grandma said as she came in followed by Adam. "You look tired," he said as he sat on my bed. That's one thing I hate about him; he acts like he owns my room. "Can you please stand up from my bed?" I asked. "Little princess," he s
Chapter 37: Sofia's POV"Is not what you think," Adam said as he walked closer to me. I turned to leave, but he held me back. "Are you ready to tell the truth?" I asked as I removed his hand from mine. Just then, Grandma came out. She moved close to where we stood. "Come with me," she said. We both walked down to their history house. It was an old house with lots of memories. We walked into the place. It never changed; it looks the same as I saw it the last time I came there. The only difference is that it looks clean, but like always. I wondered who came in to clean the whole place. "Ah!" I cried out as I hit my leg on a flower on one side of the house. Grandma looked back at me. "Sorry, my princess," she said. I followed her down to a dinner table. "Sit here. I'm coming," she said. She went inside and came outside with a long pepper in her hand. She sat right next to me and opened a book.(Flashback)The king came happily in the hospital, because Luna just gave birth. King m
Sofia's POV. It was nice being back here after many days. Everything looked different, maybe because it had been a long time. I walked around, taking it all in. The smell of food wafted through the air, and I could hear laughter and chatter. "Good day, Luna," a lady greeted me. Her voice sounded familiar. I moved closer to her. She smiled as I got to her. "It's been a while, Luna," she said. Then I figured out that it was Keith, my personal maid. It had been a while because the last time I saw her, she was in a sick bed. "How is your body now?" I asked. Her smile made me believe she was fine now. "I'm good now," she said with a smile.I walked into the big hall like they were celebrating a new king. "Welcome, our Princess," they all said and bowed with respect. "Princess" they said. I thought about that for a while because I wasn't expecting it. Why didn't they call me "Luna"? I was always Luna to them. "Welcome, my beautiful princess," Grandma added. This time, I was confused.
Sofia's POV. It was early morning, and I thought I was up early. But to my surprise, the youth were already outside waiting for me. "Good morning, Luna," they greeted in unison. I smiled and replied, "Good morning."Just then, Nightshade came out and joined us. "Adam wants to see you," he whispered. "He said he has an important message for you." I was surprised. Adam had been busy lately, and I hadn't heard from him in a while."Why didn't he call me?" I asked Nightshade. "He said he did, but you didn't respond," he replied. I checked my phone and realized that I had indeed missed his calls. "I didn't know," I said.I considered going to see Adam right away, but I didn't want to leave the youth training alone with Nightshade. "I'll go tomorrow," I said. The youth looked at me with eager eyes, and I turned to them. "Are you all ready?" I asked. "Yes, Luna," they replied in unison."Today, we'll be training in a different area," I said, leading the way. The youth followed me, excited
Sofia's POV. I walked into the forest, my eyes scanning the surroundings. I was looking for the youth who were undergoing training with Nightshade. As I walked deeper into the forest, I stumbled upon a mysterious person dressed in white. I approached him cautiously, my hand on my sword."Who are you?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. But before I could react, he knocked me down. I stood up, angry and embarrassed. "Who the hell are you?" I asked, drawing my sword. The mysterious person laughed, a low sound. He walked towards me, his movements slow and deliberate. I prepared for battle, but he was too strong. We fought for what felt like hours, but I couldn't land a single blow. He pinned me to the ground, his eyes gleaming."The fight just begins," he said, before disappearing into thin air. I looked around, but he was nowhere to be found. I shouted, "Come out, if you're not scared of me!" But there was no response.I gave up and headed to where Nightshade was training the you
