"Mom, I'm home!" Hazel called out into the empty living room before glancing into the kitchen, where her mother would usually be by this time, preparing dinner—but she wasn't there.
"But her and Dad's car is packed outside," she muttered, helping herself to a cup of cold orange juice.
She placed the cup into the dishwasher and walked upstairs in search of her parents. She was about to climb the stairs when she heard her father's voice coming from the study.
"Dad, I'm home, did you leave something behind? Where is Mom?..." she asked, opening the door to see that her parents had a visitor.
"Oops, sorry," she apologized, backtracking out the door as she noticed her parents’ nervous stares from her to the man opposite them.
The man looked up from the documents he was reading, his brown eyes meeting Hazel's onyx ones. His lips stretched into a warm smile as their eyes met. His smile sent Hazel's heart racing.
'Handsome!' she gasped in surprise as his brown eyes flickered gold, filled with several emotions: excitement, lust, and attraction.
He cleared his throat and beckoned her in.
"Why don't you join us, miss? Your parents and I were just completing a deal," he asked in his heavy Italian accent, sending butterflies deep into Hazel's stomach as he patted the space beside him for her to take.
Hazel took a step forward, trying to get closer to the handsome man but was stopped by her mother's shaky voice.
"No, no, she just returned from school and needs to get cleaned," her mom argued nervously, earning a raised eyebrow from the handsome man.
Getting the hint, Hazel clasped her hands together and bowed toward the stranger.
"Excuse me, sir, I'm sorry I disrupted your meeting. I need to clean up as I’m sweaty all over."
"That's fine. What's your name?" he asked, bringing out a pen from his jacket pocket to sign the document he had been reading.
"Hazel."
"You have a lovely name, Hazel. Let's not be strangers when we next meet, alright?"
As Hazel disappeared behind the door toward her room, the atmosphere in the study grew more tense.
"Lorenzo, I mean Alpha Lorenzo, is there a reason your Pack moved all the way here from Italy?" Mr. Eric Halton, Hazel's father, asked.
A smirk and a mischievous glint appeared in Lorenzo's eyes as he maintained deep and unshaken eye contact with the man sitting in front of him.
"Oh, I thought it would take some time, but I found what I have been looking for, Halton. Why have I never heard you had another beautiful daughter apart from the one—what was her name again?"
"Ruby," Eric provided.
"Ah, yes, Ruby. Fierce one, that one was, don't you think?" Lorenzo complimented, adjusting his suit as he stood up to leave, placing the document on the table separating them.
"You can't get Hazel involved. She's innocent. She knows nothing about Ruby's crimes. Please, Hazel is innocent. Eric, say something, please, not my baby girl," Amanda, Hazel's mother, pleaded nervously, her voice trembling as she remembered the last time she had met her older daughter.
Lorenzo sneered, his eyes showing contempt and disdain as he looked down at the couple.
"It's not my call whether she gets involved or not, you see. Even if I don't want her to be, she already is," he said, subconsciously caressing a particular spot on his neck where he knew the mark would be.
"The final move will happen tomorrow. Tell your men to be careful and watch their backs. I won't tolerate any form of disrespect," Lorenzo ordered while exiting the study.
Amanda broke down in tears, sobbing loudly as her husband held her closely with a distant look in his eyes.
"I told you! I warned you! I warned you not to get involved. Why don't you listen?!" she screamed, hitting him on the chest after every word. "Now my daughters, my baby girl," she whimpered, her snot rubbing all over his dress shirt.
"Relax, Amanda. Hazel is safe."
"You said those words when Ruby was taken. You told me she would be back and nothing would happen to her, but we both know the outcome, don't we?"
"It was Ruby's fault in the first place. She crossed them and got what she wanted!" Feeling exasperated, Eric yelled at his wife, his hand combing his black hair before punching the table.
"She was just being a child, Eric! They were being mean!" Amanda argued.
"She was being a child? Oh, come on… she was twenty-five when it happened. You call that a child? They had clear conditions and rules, and she broke all of them! Do you know what that cost them? Lives, Amanda, lives. So don't go telling me she was just being a child!" he yelled and stomped off, slamming the door behind him.
Hazel sat by her window unaware of the heated argument between her parents. She had been patiently waiting to see the handsome man from the study again. It had slipped her mind that she needed to shower at some point.
Something about him drew her in, but something about him also made her curious—extremely so.
Why were her parents so nervous in front of him?
Why were they trying to prevent her from getting close to him?
It wasn't the first time she'd met her father's business partners, despite not knowing what he did for a living. Sometimes he'd even take her along so he could get the upper hand in a business deal using her beauty.
'Who are you?' she muttered.
A black SUV drove into their driveway as Lorenzo stepped out of the house. Before entering the car, he looked toward her window and flashed her a smile that sent her heart fluttering, while mouthing, "See you soon, darling."
Heat rose on her cheeks as she jumped off the windowsill.
She saw it ag
ain.
His eyes turned gold. Was that a medical condition?
Or was she hallucinating?
Amanda shrunk in on herself as she heard Gina's words. Tears streamed down her face like a broken dam, and her body trembled from fear. She felt the walls closing in on her as Gina began to pace back and forth in the small office. Every time the punk-haired woman paced back and forth, she would stop and glare at Amanda with hatred before resuming her pacing once again."What do they want with Hazel? She is not Ruby, and she doesn't know what happened back then either! If she hadn't met Alpha Leonardo when she did, she'd still be in the dark about the whole thing. They can't make her pay for a crime she didn't commit!" Amanda choked out, and Gina scowled."You think people care? They want someone to be responsible for what happened back then, and your Hazel just happened to be a convenient choice," Gina voiced out with an exasperated groan."Please, I don't want anything to happen to Hazel! She's innocent and pure; she doesn't deserve to go through all these troubles!" Amanda begged."
Gina moved back as she saw the scene before her. She looked around to see who had taken out Kaia and her subordinates without her feeling their presence or hearing any movement from them."Sorry for making you see such an unsightly scene. My name is Gaius, and I’m an Asha. We have been after this group for a while now," a man dressed in a robe said as he walked out of the shadow while holding several tiny needles. As Gina saw him, all her senses went numb, and fear gripped her soul from the powers oozing all around the man.The man smiled at her, but she quickly noticed his smile did not reach his eyes—it was full of malice, making Gina feel suspicious."Why are the Ashas after them? Aren't they council members?" Gina asked."The news should not have reached your ears since the supreme Alphas are trying not to make it public, but the royal Beta has betrayed the supreme Alphas and has sided with the enemies. We have been on the lookout for her for a while now, and once we got the tip t
As Gina walked out of the restaurant, she lit up a stick of cigarette and let out a puff of smoke."Tch, those motherfuckers only remember they have a sister when they need help! I need to exchange that for money or at least something more useful to me," she gritted out angrily as she picked up her phone to make a call. After the second ring, Dylan picked up. "It's been ages, Gina. We've missed you," Dylan greeted, and Gina rolled her eyes in annoyance."You two know where to find me if you miss me, dumbass. What's with the lady you sent my way? Who is after her, humans or our kind?" Gina asked, going straight to the point while Dylan chuckled."You are always so direct; it hurts. Anyway, King and his men are the people after her. Her daughter is our mate, and they want her," he explained, and Gina cursed at him."You already have a mate, and I'm just hearing about it? You fucktard? Put your brother on the phone; let me curse at you two!" she growled.Dylan looked at Leonardo, who had
"How is she now? Has she calmed down a bit?" Leonardo asked as Dylan walked out of Hazel's room with a crease in his brow."She's asleep; she should feel better when she wakes up," Dylan replied."I'm feeling it was not necessary that we tell her that. We probably should have kept the whole thing away from her until it is solved. Knowing she'll feel responsible for the girls, she would want to make amends," Leonardo muttered as his eyes darted worriedly toward Hazel's closed doors."She'd even be more upset if we kept it from her and she later finds out. It's done anyway. We just have to keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't do anything out of line for now." Dylan shrugged."I sent some people to search the Halton house, but I'm sure he won't be keeping anything important there, which means we have to go to his office to search. I honestly don't know what I'm hoping to see. At least for the sake of Hazel, I'm hoping he'd be innocent in all this," Dylan voiced as they walked awa
"I have thought about it, and I'm interested!" Hazel announced, and Dylan choked on the water he was drinking."Are you trying to kill me, princess?" He coughed, and she smiled apologetically."What did you think about?" Leonardo asked with an expressionless face."I thought about what we talked about last night, you know? The sex and awakening thing. I'm interested," Hazel replied with a shrug, and Leonardo dropped the papers he was holding to look into her eyes."May I ask what part of what we discussed you thought about? You are making it sound like a business transaction. I'm feeling nervous," he teased with a raised brow, and Hazel flushed in embarrassment."I thought about all of it—I mean, every tiny bit of it, including being yours forever," she whispered, the last part making her heart flutter.Leonardo's lips quivered in amusement as he noticed how embarrassed she was. He chuckled and beckoned her over. "Sit," he ordered while tapping his lap.Hazel paused and looked around
"Let me out! Why did you keep me locked up like this?" Eric demanded while banging on the door with all his strength."Do you think Hazel will still want to be with you when she finds out that you are treating her father like this?" He continued yelling, trying to get someone's attention. Seeing that he was about to go crazy from the deafening silence all around him, Eric became desperate, wanting to be let out.Soon, Dylan pushed the door open with a tray of food in hand. "I heard you've been rejecting the food brought to you, so I brought it myself. We can have breakfast together. What do you think?" He smiled as he placed the food on the floor in front of Eric while sitting directly opposite him.Eric shivered at the sinister smile on Dylan's face, and his tantrum died down. "What do you all want with me? You can't keep me locked up like this! My wife is being held hostage, and if I don't do what they asked me to, they'll kill her! Are you trying to make Hazel motherless?" He begge
