Chapter 3

Author: Stars
From the moment I was born, my fate was tightly bound to Joey's.

We were the model mate pair that everyone in the pack envied. I had once loved him so deeply that I couldn't pull myself out.

We had sworn before the Moon Goddess statue that we would love only each other for a lifetime.

That was the first time I ever saw him cry.

After that, we lived inseparably, our days sweet and peaceful.

Until one day, while we were out on patrol, rogues ambushed us halfway through the trip. I stayed behind to cover his escape and was taken by them.

Joey collapsed in a pool of blood, watching the wolves disappear into the distance. Filled with rage and grief, he swore he would rescue me no matter what.

But he broke that promise.

During the three years I was gone, he fell in love with someone else and forgot that I was still suffering out in the wastelands, waiting for him.

In my last life, Joey's breathing grew weaker and weaker against my back. Right before he died, he used the last of his strength to speak.

"Rosalind, I did love you once, but that's in the past. During the three years you were gone, my heart felt like it was being cut every day. Courtney stayed with me through that pain. She filled the emptiness Russ felt without a mother. These past three years, she's become the most important one in my life. Consider my life a repayment to you. If there's another life, please don't stand in the way of my happiness with Courtney."

With his voice barely above a breath, he whispered one last sentence.

"Courtney, I'm coming to you."

Then, he died on my back.

The sky opened up with a torrential downpour. Rainwater, blood, and mud mixed together.

Yet, I felt nothing but endless desolation.

Holding Joey's body, I cried out in anguish.

"Why? I was your mate. I was the one who stood by you, the one who saved your life! But in the end, your heart only held Courtney, the she-wolf who stayed with you for three years. We loved each other so much. Why couldn't we make it to the end?"

But a corpse couldn't answer my questions. I could only hold Joey as his body slowly went cold and finally stiffened.

Joey would rather die and reunite with Courtney than live out his life with me.

In this life, I refused to keep lying to myself.

Since being with Courtney was what he wanted, I would grant him that wish.

"That was all in the past. I don't love him anymore. And right now, the one Joey loves is Courtney. As long as she stays in this pack, he won't forget her. Are you really going to exile her to the wastelands?"

The moment my mother heard the word "exile", she panicked and pulled Courtney into her arms, her voice shaking.

"Exile? How can you be so heartless? Courtney is my daughter, too! Sending her away would be no different from killing her."

She kept soothing Courtney, who cried softly in her arms, showering her with the kind of tenderness she had never once shown me.

I let out a bitter smile and shook my head.

Even a biological mother could abandon her own daughter. How could I ever believe Joey's lie about loving only me for a lifetime?

But it didn't matter anymore. After tonight, I would finally be free.

I would be rid of these family members who never loved me.

Just then, Courtney wiped her tears and walked toward me. When she was a few steps away, she suddenly covered her nose and mouth in disgust.

"I know you resent me for taking your place. It's understandable that you'd hate me. But as Luna, showing up in front of everyone dressed like this isn't just embarrassing yourself. You're embarrassing the entire pack."

As she spoke, she took my hand and put on a gentle expression.

"Why don't I take you to change into something clean? Joey's given me so many clothes that my closet can't even hold them all. If you don't mind, you can pick a few to wear. Consider it my apology to you."

Whispers spread through the crowd. Every word was filled with disgust toward me and praise for Courtney's kindness.

I had seen this kind of tactic countless times before.

In my last life, it was exactly Courtney's manipulations that turned everyone against me.

But now, I had seen through it all. I no longer cared what they said.

The Moon Goddess had given me a second chance. In this life, I would live for myself.

Right then, the statue on the altar stopped crying, as if it were telling me that I would never shed tears for anyone again.

As long as you ask him to send troops to help me fight the Skyreach Pack, we can still win.""Why should I help you?" I asked coldly.Joey pointed at Russ. "Even if

Joey froze. He had never seen me like this before. The pressure I gave off made even him feel uneasy, as if he was meeting me for the first time. The gentle, devoted Rosalind, who always put her mate and pup first, was gone without a trace. The moment my words fell, the wolves around us stirred."That's right! You barged in uninvited! It seems that you really don't respect our pack at all.""Get out of here! Now!"The shouting grew louder and louder, and Joey looked flustered. At that moment, Courtney suddenly stepped forward. Her eyes filled with tears as she looked at me, as if I had wronged her terribly."I know this is all because of me. You hate that I took your place, but Joey and Russ are innocent. Please don't make things hard for them."As she spoke, she pulled out a small vial and looked at Joey through her tears."Being able to meet you in this life is already enough for me. I hope you and Russ can live well. I'm willing to die to make that happen."Courtney's acti

Life in the pack was great.I began learning how to be an excellent healer and represented the pack at conferences with other packs. It was exhausting, but I enjoyed it. Only through this work did I truly learn my worth. The busy days gradually helped me forget the unpleasant memories from Joey's pack.So when Joey showed up out of nowhere, I was momentarily stunned. That day happened to be the day I was officially appointed as head healer. My father hosted a party and invited many guests to celebrate my induction.I had officially become a respected healer in the pack.Just as everyone was immersed in joy, a familiar voice suddenly echoed across the altar."Rosalind, how can you be so heartless? You even abandoned your mate and your son!"Everyone turned toward the sound. Joey was standing at the entrance of the altar, holding Russ in his arms. The werewolf I once loved with my whole heart now looked unbearably ugly to me.When my father saw Joey and remembered the sufferin

The cab had been waiting at the gate for a while.I walked out without looking back. Just as I opened the door to get in, Joey chased after me."Rosalind, if you leave, what about Russ? He's still so young! How can he be separated from his biological mother?"At those words, Courtney's face went pale. She tightened her grip on Russ and refused to let go.To her, Russ was the future Alpha. As long as she had Russ, she had power and status.Seeing the panic on Joey's face made me think of this same moment in my past life. Back then, Joey had said almost the exact same thing to me.At that time, I went to the Pack Elders to demand justice. Forced into a corner, they had no choice but to pressure Joey and order Courtney's exile.Yet, Joey only looked at me with cold indifference."Even if Courtney is only acting Luna, she made major contributions to the pack while you were gone. She didn't do anything wrong. Why should she be exiled?"And besides, Russ already sees her as his moth

I took off the Sapphire Moon ring from my hand and passed it to the person delivering the potion. "This is the payment I promised. Please thank the witch for me."After saying that, I tilted my head back and drank the potion in one go.The medicine took effect almost instantly.A bitter taste flooded my mouth. It felt as if ants were chewing through every inch of me as sharp, unrelenting pain ripped through my body.I clutched my chest and dropped to my knees, my expression twisting uncontrollably.Everyone present was stunned. Not a single person dared to make a sound.A faint ache spread through Joey's chest, confirming that the potion I drank was real.I had actually severed the mate bond with him. After the long wave of pain passed, my body felt lighter than it ever had before. I stood up and looked at everyone coldly."I've never cared about fighting Courtney for the Luna position. Before I ever returned to the pack, I had already asked the witch for a potion to break the

I ignored Courtney's provocation and went back to my own place to change into clean clothes. The moment I stepped outside, a cloud of dust flew straight at my face. My freshly changed clothes were instantly coated in dirt.Russ stood in the backyard garden with a group of friends, throwing mud at me."You witch! Serves you right for bullying my mom!"Sand got into my eyes, making it hard to see. Taking advantage of that, they started throwing rocks at me, cursing as they did.I forced my eyes open and saw the bare garden. There was nothing left but gravel and dust. My chest tightened. This had once been a beautiful field of blue roses. Joey planted them after we became mates because he knew how much I loved them. He said blue roses symbolized love that never changed, and he promised he would protect this garden forever. But just because Courtney was allergic to roses, he burned every single one we planted together. From then on, not a blade of grass grew in this backyard.
