~THE LYCAN ENFORCER ~
~Annabeth's POV~ "If this art isn't finished by dawn, my Uncle will have both our heads." Tommy’s voice was shaking so hard the paintbrushes in his hand rattled like dry bones. I sat up on my thin mattress, looking hard at the blank canvas in front of us. "A Lycan Enforcer doesn't care about art, Tommy," I said, trying to steady my own breathing. "He cares about power and control." My eyes still glued to the terrifyingly blank canvas in the center of the room. In a day's time, one of the most feared men in the Lycan territories, The new Lycan Enforcer... Kael, would arrive here in Red moon pack. He wasn't coming for a social visit. He was coming to evaluate our pack. In this world, an evaluation gone wrong usually ended in a massacre of the weak. And as a human living among wolves, I was the weakest thing in this pack. "He might kill me if this peace offering isn't perfect," Tommy whispered, his eyes wide with the predatory fear only a Beta feels when a superior is coming. "Anna, please. I can't even see the colors anymore." I stood up, the cool floorboards biting at my feet. I wasn't a shifter like them. I didn't have the strength to fight or speed to run fast, but I had a mind that could create something great out of nothing. "Pick up the brush," I commanded. "Close your eyes. We aren't painting a landscape here. We’re painting a masterpiece." For seventeen hours, we disappeared into the work. I sat on the floor, guiding tommy through a fever dream of purples and stormy gray paints. As I watched the paint hit the canvas, I couldn't help but remember the last time our pack faced an evaluation from the formal Enforcer. I was four years old when my parents tried to outrun the reign of the previous Alpha. They didn't want me to grow up as a play toy for the werewolves. But sadly, They were caught on their escape and were to be punished. Unfortunately for them, the Enforcer at that time was present for an evaluation and he gave the order for their punishment. My father was whipped 100 times until his whole body became a pile of red blood with shattered bones. He died instantly. My mother was brutally raped until her spine snapped in half. The Luna at the time had held my head, forcing my small eyes to stay open. 'WATCH,' she had whispered. 'This is what happens to humans who forget their place.' "Anna? Anna! It's done." Tommy’s voice snapped me back to the present. The painting was haunting. Two massive wolf packs howling at a single, blood red moon. It was beautiful but It was a lie. What they were capable of doing wasn't beautiful. After an inspection from our current Alpha Dorian, Tommy's uncle, he seemed pleased, and had the canvas whisked away to be framed before the Lycan Enforcer arrived. ~~~ "Wake up, sleepyhead!" Tommy shook my shoulder just as the sun began to dip. "The Enforcer arrives in an hour. Tame that jungle you call hair, will you." I rubbed my eyes and headed to the cracked mirror. My hair was a wild, kinky mane of dark curls, my Lion’s mane. I spent forty minutes pinning it back, trying to look as small and invisible as possible while dressed in a simple floral green dress. Outside, the air was warm. The entire pack stood in silent, rigid formation. Then, the SUVs arrived, a convoy of shiny black vehicles that moved with predatory grace. When the doors opened, the atmosphere turned to ice. A dozen men stepped out, all in black suits, their auras thick with power. But the man who stepped out of the middle car was different. He wore a navy suit that hugged shoulders broad enough to carry the weight of the whole realm. He didn't just walk, he moved like he owned the very ground beneath him. He must be Kael. The new Lycan Enforcer. His eyes seemed to be scanning the crowd and I immediately dropped my gaze, just Incase. Rule one; As a human, Never make eye contact with a powerful wolf or Lycan of great power. "Dorian," the Enforcer’s voice was a low, commanding rumble as he greeted our Alpha. "Kael. I see you're settling into the role well," Alpha Dorian said, his voice strained. "Well someone has to keep order." He said vaguely and halfway grinned. "My nephew has a gift for arts and we hope you can accept this offering as we wish you well in your regime." Dorian said to him. "Tommy, fetch the offering." Alpha Dorian ordered, and Tommy quickly left my side, glancing at me hopefully before making his way to them. Tommy stepped forward, presenting the painting. My heart hammered. Thum-thum. Thum-thum. A fragile sound in a sea of silent predators. "A gift, Sir," Tommy said and briefly glanced at my direction again. Kael was silent for a long moment, his eyes scanning the canvas. "You have a rare talent, boy," he finally said. Tommy smiled and turned his head to look at me once more. Then, his voice sharpened like a blade. "But why do you keep looking back at the crowd?" The silence that followed was deafening. "I... it’s nothing, Sir," Tommy stammered. "Kael.. I'm sure it's nothing." Dorian called out, wanting to be in control of the situation. "Quiet," Kael snapped at Dorian, who had tried to interject. He stepped toward Tommy, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl. "Who were you looking at?" I used my hair to shield my face and wished the ground would open up and swallow me. "Sir..." "Give me a name." "Annabeth." Tommy choked out as he couldn't take the pressure. The name hung in the air like a noose. I squeezed my eyes shut. "Annabeth." Kael repeated. The way he said my name wasn't a question, it was a summons. "Annabeth, join us, won't you?" The enforcer called out to the crowd of people. I let out a sharp spikey breath. I looked up and glanced at two wolves from the pack who looked at me with the same stern look as ever, but this time, they looked somewhat scared as well. Scared for me. "I don't like being kept waiting. Annabeth." I took another shaky, jagged breath. My legs felt like lead as I took a step forward. Lord of the defenseless, I prayed, don't let him kill me tonight. ~~ANNABETH'S POVI spawned back, distancing myself from him, but regretted it instantly. He was stark naked. And worst of all, his manhood was rock solid.“Why are you doing this?” I snapped at him.Lucien stopped.“Because it gets to you,” he said. “And you look at me now. Also, didn’t I tell you? I wanted to see how strong that bond of yours with my brother really is.” “You’re not going to succeed in whatever it is you’re planning.” “Won’t I?” He tilted his head. “Kael won’t come back anytime soon. The king won’t let him. The council wants him to marry the princess and wants to see you gone. He’s just discarding you softly. I’m the only one here. The only one that can protect you.” He was wrong. Kael will come back. He won’t leave me here alone for long. “Why don’t you just give in... Let me make you feel good. Let me rock your little pitiful human world. I bet you’ll enjoy me more than my bore of a brother.” He taunted, lurking closer to me as I stepped further back.“Please...
ANNABETH’S POVThe lair didn't feel safe to me.Atleast not with him in it. It's been two days. That’s how long it had been since i last saw Kael. Two days of waiting for him. Longing for him.And Lucien hasn't been making it easy for me.He showed up yesterday at breakfast without a shirt on. Showcasing his solid bare chest without a care in the world.I was sitting at the table, picking at Mrs. Halloway’s stew even though my stomach was still tied in knots. Chad was close by, somewhere. And Riven was sharpening his sword. Walking in every five minutes to check on me.Then the panel door scraped open. It was Lucien. Bare chest with wet hair like he’d just come from the underground spring in the lair. Black trousers dangerously low on his hips. He didn’t look cold at all. He looked like he knew exactly what he was doing with that stupid smirk he always wore on his face.“Morning, little mate,” he said. “I told you not to call me that.” My spoon clattered against the bowl. I was an
KAEL’S POVThe great hall of Rorik's throne room smelled like cold stone, old blood, and petty politics. I stood at the base of the marble steps, twelve of my best men behind me. Not as an army but a statement to them all. I came here to talk, not to burn the place down. Yet. My suit was black and my tie neatly put in place. I had my Enforcer crest positioned clearly at the right side of my chest. I wasn’t here just as a shifter, I was here as the Enforcer. To talk reason with them. I was here as the man who amended half their laws. The doors opened wide for me and my men and we walked in gracefully.King Rorik sat on the Throne, that crown heavy on his head, but his eyes even heavier. At his right, Princess Armea was seated, arms crossed, gown still the same gold from yesterday. At his left, Prince Dain with that arrogant look on his face, who was already gripping the armrest like he wanted to stand. Below them, the Council members were also seated. Seven elders. Three of them
KAEL’S POV“What is that human girl really to you? And don’t you dare lie to me again.” I looked her straight in the eye. My mind already made up.I was done lying. Done hiding the fact that I was happy.I stepped closer to her. One step. Two steps. Close enough that her guards shifted in panic. Close enough that Armea had to tilt her chin up to hold my gaze. My choice was already made. “She’s my mate,” I said. My voice low and flat.Armea blinked. Twice. Like she hadn’t expected me to say that out loud. Then she laughed. Soft at first. Then louder. Delighted and horrified all at once. “Your mate?” She pressed a gloved hand to her chest, snickering. “Kael. My love. She’s human. Humans don’t have mates. They're just toys for us. Toys. And even if it were true, it wouldn't be possible. You're a Lycan. Your kind doesn't get destined mates. You choose whom you want to mate with.”“You don't know anything about my kind.” I said. My Lycan was right under my skin now. “She was given to
KAEL'S POVI took her in my arms and kissed her deeply, like I had been holding my breath all day. Her hands came up to my chest, not to push me away but exploring. The kiss turned hungry fast. Too fast. “Kael…” she breathed against my mouth when I finally broke away so she could get some air. Her lips were pink, swollen. My thumb brushed her jaw. “I want you.” I whispered to her.My hand tightened at her waist. She didn’t pull back. Instead she reached up and cupped my face. Her palms were warm and Soft. The exact opposite of the cold of mine. Goddess, she had no idea what she did to me. How much she affected me.I kissed her again. Slower this time and Deeper. I walked her backward until her knees hit the bed. She sat, pulling me down with her. My weight settled over her, careful even when my control was fraying. Her fingers slipped under my shirt, nails dragging lightly over my bare chest. I hissed. Her touch was so sensual. Every inch of her felt like fire on my skin.“Kael, w
KAEL'S POV Once I was properly dressed in my formal suit, ready to attend today's appointment. I stepped in front of the mirror to adjust my tie.I met Annabeth's eyes, looking intently at me. "Where are you off to? Don't you ever get a day off from your duties?" She asked. "Forgive me for always being absent, love. If it were up to me, I'd rather much spend the entire minute of everyday here with you." I said to her. "Right." She said shyly. Looking away from me. "So what case are you going to solve today?" She asked. I contemplated telling her the truth. I didn't know how she'd react if I told her I was meeting with her old Alpha."I'm meeting with Alpha Dorian Of Red Moon Pack." I say, unsure if I made the right decision telling her.Her head snapped up to look at me."Alpha Dorian? You mean like my Alpha?"She asked me."He is not your alpha, Annabeth. You only lived under him as a child. And you're human. Humans aren't compelled to have alphas." I say to her."This is about
The Lycan Enforcer~~Annabeth’s POV~The air around me felt heavy, charged with a static electricity that made the fine hairs on my arms stand up. I looked at the Lycan Enforcer, Kael, and for a split second, I saw death. He wasn't just a man, he looked like a mountain of muscle, staring at me with
The Lycan Enforcer ~ANNABETH'S POV~"I can't be your mate. You're lying," I said, my voice cracking. I stumbled back toward the door, my mind racing. It can't be. I can't be. I will never accept it."Annabeth, I know this is confusing for you. But let's not talk about it now you're still tensed. C
The Lycan Enforcer ~~ANNABETH'S POV~ As the SUV door shut, a cool mountain wind whipped around the clearing, sending a fresh wave of shivers up my arms. It was so much more colder here than in the valley of Red moon park, the air felt thinner, sharper, smelling of fresh pine and something ancient
~THE LYCAN ENFORCER ~Annabeth's POV~The world went silent. A high pitched ringing filled my ears, a siren of pure panic. I felt the blood drain from my face as I grabbed onto Tommy’s arm, my nails drawing blood through his shirt."Kael," Dorian reasoned, though his voice lacked any real fight. "Y
