Logan Kincaid, the man who knew he was doing the right thing, cleansing his land of the plague that had befallen it. He was an alpha after all and no other person could lead better than him.
He stood proudly before the crowd of his pack members who had gathered over the infamous sycamore tree. Beneath the tree, a concrete slab was elevated from the floor. And by the side, a well was dug so deep that no one dared to go close, except it was the Alpha's order. An order to fall in and get killed.
The dreaded place was known as the execution corner. Logan stepped forward, brandishing a sword. The people on the front row cowered in fear as they moved backwards.
By his side, two men knelt down. One seemed to be out of life. Blood had dried on his pale skin, the skin which looked like it was dragged across brazen stones.
His hand shook limply before finally going out of motion.
Logan chuckled, then grinned, revealing his gold tooth at the left side of his upper teeth.
He was shirtless, and the lower part of his shirt had red marks on it. They were blood stains, which obviously weren't his own.
“Alpha, please…please spare him. Even…even if it means killing me in his place.” The man who was still healthy whimpered.
Logan wiped the sweat that slicked down his forehead with the back of his palm. He stepped closer to the kneeling man and stroke him hard across the face with the blunt side of his sword.
The man yelped, his face contortioning in pure visceral pain. A woman among the crowd screamed at the top of her voice. She bawled out her eyes and tears ran down her face and she refused to be comforted.
The morning dew fell from a leaf, landing on the bruised cheek of the man, causing him to wince more. He nursed the area with his palm. His eyes were bloodshot, clothes torn and hair disheveled like he had been manhandled before being brought there.
His legs were white like they hadn't touched water in days. His last toe on the left leg had broken off and his lips were chapped like one who had run out of body fluids.
“We are sorry, Alpha.” The man begged once again.
“Sorry?” Logan echoed with a tone that felt like mockery. "The laws accept only men with women." He pulled a timid looking woman at his side closer to himself and she trembled.
He forced a kiss down her lips and she whimpered like she had tasted something bitter. He released his grip on her waist and she stood, looking at him with eyes full of fear. He growled at her before she shook again and lowered her gaze to the ground, never bringing it up again.
"I have enough women to myself, but you idiots decide to fuck men instead. Women are meant to be our playthings and not our fellow men. Both of you are a disgrace to manhood.”
“I'm sorry…Alpha,” The man stuttered and clasped both palms together, pleading for mercy.
Logan motioned to the men standing by his side. They nodded their heads in approval and advanced towards the man, with their horsewhips in their hands.
Before he could beg for mercy, the whip landed on his neck, missing his lips by an inch. Another landed on his back. His screams filled the air, but the guards were unrelenting.
The woman that kept crying among the crowd finally tore her way through and knelt before Logan's feet. Her eyes were heavy with tears.
“Please, my alpha. He's the only son in the family. Spare my brother's life. Please, I ….” Her statement was cut short as a vicious whip landed on her back.
“Priya!!!” The man who was being whipped screamed and stretched out his hand to his sister.
Logan's man lashed her a second time with the whip. She collapsed on the floor before he crudely kicked her off the podium.
The crowd circled around her, trying to get her to her feet. Blood leaked through the dress that she wore.
“Silence!” Logan commanded the crowd before returning his focus to the gay man.
His men ceased beating him and one of them kicked him on the head before leaving him for Logan. The man was in a worse state than before, with bruises circled around his body. The corner of his face was swollen and purple.
Logan crouched to his level on the floor and gripped him by the sides of his face. The punished man whimpered as the alpha's sharp nails dug into his skin, even causing droplets of blood to leak out.
“Look at your partner.” Logan ordered. The man shakily turned his head to look at his accomplice who was lying helpless like he was dead.
“Dave, do you want to join your lover?”
Dave shook his head.
“Answer me!” Logan barked and slapped him hard across the face.
“No.” Dave responded weakly.
Logan raised himself from his lowered position and walked towards the unconscious partner.
He dug his hand into his pocket and brought out a dagger. He lowered it to the neck of the man and Dave screamed at the top of his voice.
“No. No. No.”
Logan smiled before slitting the throat of his unconscious partner, rendering him completely dead. He cut off the entire neck and the crowd gasped. An elderly woman among the crowd fainted as he held the head for everyone to see.
"This is what would happen to the rest of you faggots. As long as I'm alive, no gay man would be spared." He dumped the head into the well.
“Give it to me,” He stretched out his hand towards one of his men that was by his side. The man handed him a whip, lined with nails and tiny bits of glass.
Dave swallowed hard as he sighted the whip. He knew he'd be flogged till he denounced his sexuality and agreed to mate with a woman and that was something he detested.
The whip slapped against his skin and the man screamed as the nails dug into his back.
He lifted the whip to the man's face and struck it hard. His face was covered with blood. Shards from the glass got into his eyes, turning them crimson.
The helpless man coughed out blood and laid weakly. "Are you still adamant? Denounce being a gay and swear that you'd mate a woman."
Another lash landed on his face. The man's lips quivered. "I can't,"
Logan's lips curved into an evil smirk. He had witnessed enough of the fooling around. He unsheathed the sword by his side and cut Dave's head off.
The crowd screamed and another woman fainted.
With a satisfied look on his face, he ordered his beta. "Bring in the other culprits.”
BACK AT HERICONSilas walked fast and the messenger had to move quickly to stay ahead of him.The council members followed behind Silas, and Caine and Griffin came after them. Nobody had been asked to come or not come. When a king moves toward something unusual in his own palace the people around him tend to follow and nobody stops to debate whether they should. They went down two flights of stairs and through the lower corridor that led toward the dungeon section of the palace. The dungeon was not a place Silas visited often. It was used for storage mostly now and occasionally for discipline when the situation called for it. The guards who monitored it had a straightforward job that rarely involved anything unusual. The guard who had sent the messenger was waiting at the entrance to the lower dungeon section. He was a large man named Bren who had worked palace security for several years and was not someone known to give in to panic. When Silas saw his face he could tell immediately
"You are not," the elderly woman said from the doorway. She had followed them down the corridor and was standing just outside the room looking in. "You are functioning but you are not fine. There is a difference."Logan looked at her. "Every hour I stand here is an hour where Monty is somewhere up there and I do not know if he is alright. I do not have time to rest properly and then start training from the beginning. It will work up to something that might take weeks." He looked at Oscar. "Tell me how training starts. I am not asking you to open the portal tonight. I am asking you to start showing me what I need to know so that we can get there as fast as possible."Oscar looked at him for a long moment. The elderly woman made a quiet sound from the doorway. Oscar glanced at her and she gave a very small nod.Oscar looked back at Logan. "Training begins with awareness," he said and clasped both hands behind him. "Before you can direct what is inside you, you have to be able to feel i
Logan was still sitting at the table when Axel and the others came back. He heard them before he saw them. Footsteps coming down the corridor, more than one set, moving at a normal pace rather than the hurried pace of people who had found something urgent. Logan looked at the doorway and waited.Axel walked in first. The others came in behind him. They were all carrying their gemstone lights and none of them had anyone with them.Logan looked at Axel. "Where is he?"Axel set his gemstone light down on the nearest surface and looked at Logan directly. "We searched every corridor near the portal entrance. We went through the connecting passages and the side rooms and the lower section near the foundation wall. We covered everything within range of where the portal activated." He paused. "There is nobody there. No person, no sign that anyone came through besides you."Logan looked at him."We found some disturbance near the closed portal wall," one of the others said. He was younger than
Logan looked at her. "All of your powers are fading?""Not all at once and not completely," she said. "But yes. We are weaker than we were. Some of us more than others." She looked at his food. "Eat. You need energy and your body is still adjusting to being here."Logan ate more of the bread and some of the dried meat. It was not bad. It was plain but filling. He drank the rest of the water that was in a second cup on the table.Oscar was still sitting across from him and had been quiet while the elderly woman spoke. He was watching Logan with the same patient expression he had carried since Logan woke up. Like he was waiting for questions and had all the time available to answer them.Logan looked at him. "Demetrius. The one who came through and was reborn as the body I am in. How old was he when he crossed over?"Oscar thought about it for a second. "Over six hundred years."Logan stopped chewing for a moment. He sat with that. Over six hundred years. The vampire who had sacrificed
LOGAN“I think someone else was at the portal when it activated.” One of the vampires said.Logan was back in the main room sitting on a low bench near the table when Oscar came and sat across from him. Logan had already mentioned that he had to find Monty, but he didn't know how to go about it.The room was lit by two fire torches on opposite walls and a large pale blue gemstone sitting in a carved holder in the corner. The gemstone gave off enough light to see everything clearly without the warmth of fire. Logan had noticed that the vampires seemed to prefer the gemstone light over the fire torches where they could use it. The fire torches flickered and sent shadows moving across the walls. The gemstone light was steady and did not move. There was food on the table. Bread and something that looked like dried meat and a cup of something dark that smelled like herbs. Logan did not ask where it came from. He was hungry and his body was still recovering from the silver stab wound and fr
Caine set down his utensil and sat back slightly in his chair. "Those laws are gone. I lifted them the week after I took the alpha position." He said it plainly in a calm tone. "They were cruel and they were wrong and they had no place in a pack that wanted to be part of the larger world. Hericon is proof that a territory can be powerful and well governed without persecuting its own people."Silas looked at him for a moment. "That is good to hear.""It was long overdue," Caine continued. He picked up his utensil again. "Logan had his beliefs and he enforced them ruthlessly. Some of the things done under his rule were things I was not proud of. I intend to build something different."Griffin looked up at that and looked at Caine with an expression that was almost unreadable and then looked back at his plate.Silas nodded. "Moon Valleys will be better for it. I have had people from your pack come through Hericon over the years seeking safety from exactly those laws. It will be good for
