A trio of haggard looking men were pushed forward. They were shirtless, with unkempt beards, having visible ribcages like they had been starved for weeks.

They were thrown forwards to kneel before Logan.

“I denounce it.” One of the prisoners screamed at the top of his voice.

A taunting smirk appeared on Logan's face and he grabbed the man by the chin.

“How do I believe you? How do I know that you're not just trying to save your life?”

“My Alpha…” the man choked as Logan's fingers dug into his sides. “If I'm ever caught with a man, then kill me at the spot.”

“Get up!” Logan ordered.

The man staggered to his feet immediately. He supported the weight of his broken leg with the other and from his facial expression, one could tell that he was in pain.

“I give you two days. Just two days.” Logan spat and raised two fingers high to buttress his point.

“You have two days to mark a mate, and you have one year to mate with a woman.”

“Yes, my Alp…” the man tried to respond, but Logan's voice cut him off.

“The mating shouldn't be in vain. You must provide a child as evidence. Make her pregnant.” Logan shouted that last part at the top of his voice. His eyes were widened and the veins around his neck popped out, making him look like he was fighting something serious. Well, he was. Fighting against grave immorality was something serious to him.

The culprit stared at the ground. His eyes bore a kind of pain that made it look like he was regretting his action, but there was nothing else he could do. This was the only way to survive.

“Am I making myself clear?”

“Yes sir.”

Logan nodded his head. With both hands clasped behind his back, he addressed the remaining two.

“You saw what your friend did, huh? Denounce or die.”

The two men exchanged glances and whispered something inaudible among themselves.

Logan chuckled and rubbed the stubble on his jaw.

“A lover's chitchat. How romantic.”

“Oh, you're even reaching out to touch each other.” He mocked once more as the men held hands.

They looked at themselves again and nodded.

Logan laughed even louder, amused by their public display of affection.

“It seems both of you want to go to the afterlife together. Who do I kill first?”

While he reached for his waist to unsheath his sword, his beta, Caine ran towards him panting heavily.

He drew the sword back in.

“Alpha. I've been trying to reach you.” Caine rasped as he ran out of breath.

“Marceline is giving birth.”

Logan's facial expression changed to a tensed one. He unsheathed his sword and threw it in front of his guards that had helped beat up the previous culprit.

“Deal with these morons.” He ordered the men, before dashing off with Caine.

They got to the pack house and he headed to Marceline's room. The cry of a newborn baby welcomed him.

Caine excused himself from the room. It was just Marceline and two nurses that were with the Alpha.

“Welcome, our Alpha.” Nurse Tracy greeted with a slight bow.

Logan ignored her greeting and walked towards Marceline who was holding her new born child to her chest.

Her face paled with fear as she saw him. She already knew that if he found out, she'd be in trouble.

“Alpha, please, you can't come closer to the newborn with all these dirts on you.” One of the nurses said as she tried to block his path.

“Get out of the way.” He ordered instantly.

“But Alpha, perhaps I could bring water to wash your…”

Her statement was accompanied with a deafening slap on her face. She nursed her bruised face with one hand, while blinking repeatedly to hold back the tears.

“I'm sorry,” she muttered as she excused from his path.

He reached Marceline and grabbed the child from her chest. The child cried in response.

He turned the baby upside down roughly, and when he realized it, his eyes darkened.

“It's a girl.” He spat in utmost disgust.

He flung the baby across and Marceline screamed and yelped in horror. The nurse caught the baby just before she hit the floor.

Marceline's eyes were already glassy with tears. She knew her fate and this ruthless alpha wouldn't pardon her. She was a rogue under imprisonment. She was meant to be freed, but only after the condition of giving birth for him, and not just any birth, a son and an heir.

He tapped his forehead three times as he mindlinked his beta and his other men.

They appeared a few minutes later.

“Take her away to the dungeons.” He ordered sternly.

“No. No please. Please my alpha. I can try again.” Marceline screamed with tears in her eyes.

Two men held her hand, reading to drag her from the bed. They paused to see if the alpha may say something different.

“Alpha please,” the nurses went on their knees. “She wouldn't survive in the dungeons. She…she is still unhealed.”

“The baby is healthy. Please let me take my child and leave.” Marceline pleaded in a teary voice.

“Healthy?” Logan scoffed sarcastically. He clasped both hands behind him in his usual position.

“Give her it.” Logan pointed at the newborn who had been crying loudly.

The guards released Marceline from their grip. She collected her child with trembling hands.

“Pity is not in my nature. Consider this a warning, not mercy. I never want to set my eyes on you ever again. Leave the Moon Valleys pack and never return.

The woman got to her feet, clutching her child to her chest like it was the only thing she had left. Well, it was.

The nurses supported her.

Logan didn't wait for their next action before leaving the room with his men. Caine lingered for a short while after Logan had left and slipped some money into the hands of the nursing mother.

She opened her mouth to say thank you, but he signaled her to keep shut.

After that, he trailed behind Logan.

BACK AT HERICONSilas walked fast and the messenger had to move quickly to stay ahead of him.The council members followed behind Silas, and Caine and Griffin came after them. Nobody had been asked to come or not come. When a king moves toward something unusual in his own palace the people around him tend to follow and nobody stops to debate whether they should. They went down two flights of stairs and through the lower corridor that led toward the dungeon section of the palace. The dungeon was not a place Silas visited often. It was used for storage mostly now and occasionally for discipline when the situation called for it. The guards who monitored it had a straightforward job that rarely involved anything unusual. The guard who had sent the messenger was waiting at the entrance to the lower dungeon section. He was a large man named Bren who had worked palace security for several years and was not someone known to give in to panic. When Silas saw his face he could tell immediately

"You are not," the elderly woman said from the doorway. She had followed them down the corridor and was standing just outside the room looking in. "You are functioning but you are not fine. There is a difference."Logan looked at her. "Every hour I stand here is an hour where Monty is somewhere up there and I do not know if he is alright. I do not have time to rest properly and then start training from the beginning. It will work up to something that might take weeks." He looked at Oscar. "Tell me how training starts. I am not asking you to open the portal tonight. I am asking you to start showing me what I need to know so that we can get there as fast as possible."Oscar looked at him for a long moment. The elderly woman made a quiet sound from the doorway. Oscar glanced at her and she gave a very small nod.Oscar looked back at Logan. "Training begins with awareness," he said and clasped both hands behind him. "Before you can direct what is inside you, you have to be able to feel i

Logan was still sitting at the table when Axel and the others came back. He heard them before he saw them. Footsteps coming down the corridor, more than one set, moving at a normal pace rather than the hurried pace of people who had found something urgent. Logan looked at the doorway and waited.Axel walked in first. The others came in behind him. They were all carrying their gemstone lights and none of them had anyone with them.Logan looked at Axel. "Where is he?"Axel set his gemstone light down on the nearest surface and looked at Logan directly. "We searched every corridor near the portal entrance. We went through the connecting passages and the side rooms and the lower section near the foundation wall. We covered everything within range of where the portal activated." He paused. "There is nobody there. No person, no sign that anyone came through besides you."Logan looked at him."We found some disturbance near the closed portal wall," one of the others said. He was younger than

Logan looked at her. "All of your powers are fading?""Not all at once and not completely," she said. "But yes. We are weaker than we were. Some of us more than others." She looked at his food. "Eat. You need energy and your body is still adjusting to being here."Logan ate more of the bread and some of the dried meat. It was not bad. It was plain but filling. He drank the rest of the water that was in a second cup on the table.Oscar was still sitting across from him and had been quiet while the elderly woman spoke. He was watching Logan with the same patient expression he had carried since Logan woke up. Like he was waiting for questions and had all the time available to answer them.Logan looked at him. "Demetrius. The one who came through and was reborn as the body I am in. How old was he when he crossed over?"Oscar thought about it for a second. "Over six hundred years."Logan stopped chewing for a moment. He sat with that. Over six hundred years. The vampire who had sacrificed

LOGAN“I think someone else was at the portal when it activated.” One of the vampires said.Logan was back in the main room sitting on a low bench near the table when Oscar came and sat across from him. Logan had already mentioned that he had to find Monty, but he didn't know how to go about it.The room was lit by two fire torches on opposite walls and a large pale blue gemstone sitting in a carved holder in the corner. The gemstone gave off enough light to see everything clearly without the warmth of fire. Logan had noticed that the vampires seemed to prefer the gemstone light over the fire torches where they could use it. The fire torches flickered and sent shadows moving across the walls. The gemstone light was steady and did not move. There was food on the table. Bread and something that looked like dried meat and a cup of something dark that smelled like herbs. Logan did not ask where it came from. He was hungry and his body was still recovering from the silver stab wound and fr

Caine set down his utensil and sat back slightly in his chair. "Those laws are gone. I lifted them the week after I took the alpha position." He said it plainly in a calm tone. "They were cruel and they were wrong and they had no place in a pack that wanted to be part of the larger world. Hericon is proof that a territory can be powerful and well governed without persecuting its own people."Silas looked at him for a moment. "That is good to hear.""It was long overdue," Caine continued. He picked up his utensil again. "Logan had his beliefs and he enforced them ruthlessly. Some of the things done under his rule were things I was not proud of. I intend to build something different."Griffin looked up at that and looked at Caine with an expression that was almost unreadable and then looked back at his plate.Silas nodded. "Moon Valleys will be better for it. I have had people from your pack come through Hericon over the years seeking safety from exactly those laws. It will be good for
