Elara

I watch from my tower window until the last rider disappears into the forest, my hands pressed against the glass hard enough to leave marks.

The courtyard below feels emptier somehow, as if Dominic's departure has drained something vital from the very air. I tell myself it's just concern for any palace guard riding into danger, but the hollow ache in my chest knows better.

The image of that kitchen girl—Amelie—touching his arm so familiarly burns behind my eyes. The easy way she smiled at him, the possessive note in her voice when she mentioned their dinner plans. And worst of all, the way he seemed to welcome her attention, even encourage it.

It's nice to have someone waiting for me to return.

Those words echo in my memory like a blade between my ribs. Of course he's moving on. Of course he's found someone who can give him what I never could—open affection, uncomplicated desire, a future without the weight of crowns and prophecies.

I should be happy for him. Should want him to

DominicRage floods through me, sharp and clean and utterly focused. These bastards are threatening her, using knowledge of her gifts to plan goddess knows what kind of retaliation.I come around the tree faster than the silver-haired bitch expects, my sword leading in a thrust aimed at her heart. She deflects with a barrier of crackling energy, but the impact sends her staggering back."Touched a nerve, did we?" she taunts, weaving another spell with elegant precision. "The loyal guard dog, protecting his precious princess.""Fuck you," I snarl, pressing my attack with the kind of controlled fury that's made me Alexander's most effective warrior.Steel clashes against magic in a deadly dance through the burning forest. She's powerful—more powerful than anyone I've faced before—but power without discipline is just waste. My sword finds gaps in her defenses, forcing her to give ground despite her magical advantages.Around us, the battle rages with increasing intensity. I catch glimpse

DominicThe forest feels wrong.I've been tracking through these borderlands for hours now, and every instinct I possess is screaming danger. The air tastes of copper and ozone, like the moments before lightning strikes. Even the horses are nervous, ears constantly swiveling and nostrils flaring at scents that have nothing to do with normal woodland creatures."Boss," Mark calls from my left flank, his voice tight with the same unease I'm feeling. "You getting anything from this place?""Yeah. That we shouldn't be here." I rein in my mount, studying the forest around us with the paranoia that's kept me alive through five years as Alexander's Beta. The trees are too quiet. No bird songs, no rustle of small animals in the underbrush. Even the wind seems muted, as if the very air is holding its breath."Torres," I call to our second-in-command, who's been unusually silent since we deviated from our original route. "How much further to the second site?""Should be just ahead," Torres repl

Elara "Elara!" Caspian's voice pulls me back to the present, where I'm apparently gripping the arms of my chair hard enough to leave marks in the wood. "What did you see?""The attack," I gasp, my voice hoarse from a scream I don't remember releasing. "It's happening now. Not at the third site—they've moved it. Dominic and his team are riding directly into a trap.""How is that possible? The mission just left.""I don't know, but they're in immediate danger." I struggle to my feet, magical residue making my movements unsteady. "I have to warn them somehow.""Elara, even if we sent a messenger now, they'd never reach the team in time."He's right, and the knowledge makes me want to scream with frustration. My visions show me danger, but they might as well be showing me the weather for all the good they do in preventing disaster."There has to be something," I insist, pacing to the window where storm clouds are gathering again. "Some way to—"Another wave of vision hits before I can fin

DominicElara is dressed in a deep purple cloak that brings out her eyes, silver-blonde hair braided back in a style that's both practical and elegant. Beautiful as always, but there's something different about her this morning. A tension in her shoulders, a tightness around her eyes that suggests she slept about as well as I did.Her gaze finds mine across the courtyard, and for a moment, the careful distance we've maintained for three years wavers. There's something raw in her expression, something that looks almost like—Before I can name the emotion her attention shifts to Amelie standing close beside me, and whatever I thought I saw disappears behind the familiar mask of royal politeness. But not before I catch the slight tightening of her jaw, the way her hands clench briefly at her sides.Jealousy. It's gone so quickly I might have imagined it, but my wolf recognizes the signs of a territorial response. Alexander's words echo in my memory: She begged me to send someone else beca

DominicSleep is a fucking myth.I've been staring at the ceiling of my quarters for the better part of three hours, watching shadows shift across the stone as storm clouds finally begin to break apart outside my window. Every time I close my eyes, Alexander's words echo in my head like a persistent drumbeat. What if she's been protecting you by pushing you away?Trust me, Dom. Lord Caspian isn't the threat you think he is.She begged me to send someone else because she was terrified of losing you.The hope those words sparked feels dangerous, like touching a blade to see if it's sharp. Three years of careful distance have taught me not to read meaning into Princess Elara's actions, but now Alexander's planted seeds of doubt about everything I thought I understood.I roll out of bed with a growl of frustration, padding to the window in bare feet. Dawn is still an hour away, but the storm has mostly passed, leaving behind a sky streaked with gray clouds and the promise of difficult trav
