MasukSage’s POV
I woke to softness.
Not the thin mattress I was used to. Not the sheets that always smelled faintly of dust and neglect. This was something else—plush, warm.
For a moment, I didn’t open my eyes. I just enjoyed the calmness. My head still ached, but not the brutal pounding from the night before.
Then awareness crept in.This room didn’t smell like home.
It didn’t smell like the pack house either.
The air was clean, expensive and calm.
My eyes opened slowly.
The ceiling above me was wrong.
It was too high and too smooth. Painted in a soft cream color that looked deliberate, chosen. Not ignored like what I had back in the pack house.
My heart skipped as I pushed myself up and stared around the room.
Nothing here belonged to me.
The furniture was elegant, the curtains heavy. The bed beneath me was far too luxurious for someone who lived in the shadows of a pack house.
Memories began to stitch itself together, but one face remained dominant in my mind.
I can’t believe I still don’t know his name. But at least, I was finally able to see his full features when we got to the hotel, the warm lights shining directly on him.
He had a smooth skin like that of someone born into luxury. But the tattoo on his left hand screamed danger. His face looked tough, the scar under his eyes made him look even more scary. But what was intriguing was how that scary man with a sharp jawline still looked so handsome. His eyes were pure gold, nothing like this world had ever known. I scanned every single inch of his face as he spoke to the receptionist, every inch including his kissable love shaped lips.
My chest tightened at the thought of his lips on mine.
Heat rushed through me so suddenly I sucked in a breath.
Why did my skin feel so warm?
A knock broke the moment.
“Room service.”
I flinched, my pulse racing. When I stood, dizziness washed over me, forcing me to steady myself before walking to the door.
A woman smiled politely at me, holding a tray. “Good morning, ma’am. How was your night?”
I nodded, my throat tight.
“Where is he?” I asked before I could stop myself.
“The gentleman who brought you?” she clarified.
“Yes.”
“He left very early this morning.” Something sharp twisted in my chest before I could reason it away. “He asked me to give you these.”
She handed me the tray. In it was money and a dress.
Red, elegant and beautiful in a way I wasn’t used to.
I took them silently, my fingers brushing the fabric. Cyrus had never given me anything like this before.
Not once.
He never even cared enough to do anything nice for me.
The realization cracked something inside me that I didn’t know was still holding together.
As the woman turned to leave, I called out, “Please wait. Do you know his name? Or… a number? Anything?”
She shook her head apologetically. “I’m sorry, ma’am. I can’t help with that.”
I nodded, disappointment settling heavily in my chest.
Inside the room, I changed slowly, while pondering on why this stranger had stood up for me back there.
Other than my mother, no one else in this pack ever stood up for me. The feeling of being cared for suddenly felt strange to me.
Despite the conflict in my mind, I didn’t fail to notice how perfectly the dress fits.
How did a stranger know my size in one night, when my mate of five years never bothered to learn it?
I looked back at the tray. Close to the stack of money. There was a note. One I had somehow not noticed before.
“This should be enough to get you back home safely.” That was it, short and precise.
A stack of cash? Just to return home?
For a moment there I considered running away to somewhere safe, with the money that this handsome stranger had given me. But
I had money and I had a chance. But then I thought of my mother.
She would be alone, vulnerable and still trapped in that palace.
Cyrus would punish her for my escape. I knew him well enough.
So I dressed, gathered my belongings, and headed back to the packhouse.
The sight of him waiting outside the pack house made my stomach drop.
Cyrus leaned against the wall, his expression was sharp with irritation, possessive, but not worried. He is never worried.
“Who the hell told you that you could walk out of this house anytime you wanted?” he demanded, his eyes burning with fury.
Instead of stopping to explain myself to him, I walked past him.
For the first time, I chose defiance.
He scoffed, angrily yanking my arm and pulling me back to face him. “Don’t you dare walk out on me!”
His eyes finally caught the dress. He let go of me, letting his eyes roam over the dress.
Then a chuckle erupted from him.
“You think wearing a dress like that would automatically make you pretty?” He said, his voice filled with disgust while his eyes lingered on me for longer than necessary.
I felt embarrassed, “I didn’t do this for you, Cyrus.” I defended. “ I realised a long time ago that there’s no point in trying. You’ll never see me as more than what I am.”
“So you’re seeing other men now!”He growled.
“I wish I was,” I muttered, avoiding his eyes.
He held my chin tight. “Don’t you dare test my patience.
“Any man that lays a hand on you is as good as dead.” His words resounded in my head.
“You. Are. Mine!”
His claim on me made me sick to the bones. “I don’t belong to anyone,” I shot back. “Most especially not you, Cyrus.”
“I reject you, Alpha Cyrus of Shadow Pack as my mate!”
He slammed me harder into the wall.
I groaned in pain.
His hot breath hit my skin before he could say a word. “You won’t dare to do that. You belong to me, Sage. And I choose whatever the fuck I do with you.” His eyes were darker now. Possessive.
Cyrus's POV My hands tightened around the phone. If I could reach in and tear Dominic's heart out of his chest then I would. It was maddenig - watching him act like she was his. She wasn't! She was mine! Only mine. This was all I needed to know that I had to act faster. If I kept being patient, he would win her over. I hadn't ignored the slight tilt of her lips as she smiled when he said it. It wasn't easily noticeable but I noticed it. After all, I had known her for years. She was my mate. Nothing of that second chance bullshit that Dominic had spewed. I would make sure she was mine again, even if I had to destroy his kingdom to do so. Only then would he know not to play games with me. There could be no more delay, I turned to Leon, “Make sure our men keep their eyes here and make him break. Let's head back to the kingdom before our time expires. We don't have a complete map yet” Leon nodded and began to do as I asked while I walked back to the car. My hands itched to do somethi
Dominic's POV A part of me had known that calling Gloria for a private meeting wouldn't be ideal but it didn't matter. I had a few things on my mind and her presence wasn't helping matters. I needed to get her out of my kingdom. Cyrus was still holed up where he had kept himself. My men had been watching to make sure he didn't make any moves but nothing had come back to me. He was being careful - too careful. It was suspicious. I picked my files, “Keep eyes on him no matter what. I don't care if nothing ever happens but he can't catch us unprepared" I told Keisha.“Yes Alpha" he said, going off to another side of the palace while I headed to the room where I had asked Gloria to wait for me. It wasn't supposed to be hidden but I didn't want anyone seeing both of us together, especially my family. When I got to the quarters, I opened the door and walked in, making sure the door was locked behind me. She was seated at the table with a few papers open in front of her. When she heard t
Dominic's POV I could clearly see she was nervous, her eyes darting around the restaurant. It hadn't gone past my notice, the people who had been staring at us. Of course the news would spread throughout the kingdom in very little time. We were alone again, her eyes on me, watching carefully. I wanted to ask her to talk to me but didn't say anything. Instead, I cleared my throat, and spoke, “Tell me something about you, something I may not know" She raised a brow at the question, whether it was wonder or something else, I didn't know for sure. "Well, I would have preferred to ask you that question. You're the one with so much more that I don't know” she gestured around. She knew she was right but I didn't answer her immediately. Instead I smiled, "I invited you here to talk to you, get to know you. There's not much to me anyway. It would be too boring”She shook her head stubbornly, "I'm sure there's so much I don't know. You've ruled a whole kingdom for years. There's definitely
Sage's POV Now I had no doubt that he thought I was some sort of fool after all. That his words would just trump hers when he hadn't told me even half of the truth. At that moment I wanted to tell him of the war he supposedly fought for her but decided not to. The indecision was clear in his face. He didn't know for sure what to do next. If he was going to give a few more stories or the truth. He cleared his truth as he chose, “Anyway she'll be gone soon and out of the way. You won't have to listen to any of her stories" I nodded, there was nothing else to say. He had chosen to keep me in the dark and something told me he wouldn't change that. At that moment, the decision was clear. This couldn't work out - wouldn't work out. Not with the way we held secrets from each other. Not with his kingdom wanting another woman as his queen. He was better than Cyrus but it was either trouble or trouble. I would need to rescue my mother from Cyrus first. He turned around and continued to wal
Dominic's POV I was in the middle of sorting a document out when a knock came on the door. I sighed, hoping it wasn't her, “Come in" I said, watching the door for who would come in. Surprisingly, Keisha came in. He looked like he had raced to get here, sweating and panting when he walked in. He closed the door behind him. “I'm sorry My king, I tried to reach you through the link but you weren't available" I shook my head as I came back to the present. I had been lost in my thoughts and unknowingly scrambled that. “It's fine, did anything happen?" I asked him. He nodded, “Yes my king. The men we asked to watch Cyrus said he just left the territory. He didn't go with his men so it wasn't a permanent exit. They just saw him leave with his beta in a hurry" he informed me. I sat up straight at that, raising a brow at the news. “That is different then. Did they follow him to wherever he went?" I asked him. Something told me that this place was important, maybe he was hiding something t
Cyrus's POV My hands held her throat tightly, squeezing the air from it as strongly as I could. “How dare you" I muttered, anger pulsed through me like it was my blood. I could almost taste it whenever I swallowed. Her eyes were wide with fear as she stared back at me. She opened her mouth to beg but all that came out were fast breaths as she tried to talk. “Pl…" she began but couldn't try anymore, not with my hands crushing her windpipe. “Alpha, she's going to die" Lyon told me a fact I already knew. He shut up when he saw the look I gave him, moving back in fear. I looked back at her, enjoying the feeling as I slowly snuffed the life out of her. Just before she was gone past the place I couldn't control, I let her go. She fell to the ground, gasping as she tried her hardest to breathe. Her hands clawed at her throat, breath fast and steady as she tried her hardest to catch herself. I looked down at the pathetic sight with some pleasure. Before she could move or do anything, I
