Fresh hoofprints cut across the road ahead of us. The ground was still soft where they'd pressed in.

Ronan crouched down to look at them. His jaw was tight. "They're ahead of us."

"How many?" I asked.

"Enough to make this a bad idea."

A sharp crack came from the trees. We all froze. Someone was out there, watching us.

A young man stumbled out with his hands up. He was filthy, hollow-eyed, and had no weapon on him. His eyes landed on me first.

"Are you looking for Marcus?" he asked.

"How do you know?" I asked Garrick. He hesitated. For a moment the dark stretched out long and ugly around us. "I didn't see it myself. A message reached me a few weeks ago, from someone watching the Keeper's last home. They said he died of natural causes.""But you don't believe that," I said."He was living under another name," Garrick said. "Very few people knew where to find him. Someone found out who he was just before he died.""Who found him?""I don't know.""Why wait until now to tell me?" I snapped. The anger came up hot and fast. "I walked in here hoping he could answer my questions.""Because I didn't want you chasing a dead man's trail without knowing the danger first," Garrick said. He wasn't sorry, and he didn't pretend to be.Ronan stepped between us before it turned into something worse. "We can't fight each other while riders are on the road."I let it go. But the disappointment sat in my chest like a stone the whole time we walked. I had spent days chasing answers.

Nobody moved."Who did my father send?" I called up to the figure on the balcony. She didn't answer, her eyes flicking to Ronan's hand, hovering near his weapon."Leave before this mill becomes another grave," the second voice warned from somewhere deeper inside."If you really believe I'm dangerous," I called back, "why warn me instead of just attacking?"A long pause. Then, quieter: "Because I made that mistake once."Ronan leaned close. "A convincing answer isn't the same as a trustworthy one.""I know," I said. "But leaving now means losing the first real lead we've had about my father."The woman on the balcony introduced herself as Mara Venn, a former clerk from the old territorial courier service, and told us to come through the side door. Ronan wasn't having it — he sent one of our companions to watch the road, left another with Tomas, and only then did we approach together.Inside, Mara waited beside a worn table, older than I'd expected, one hand visibly damaged with old sca

The horns hadn't stopped by the time we reached the top of the ridge. Tomas kept falling behind. His breath was ragged, and he pressed his hand hard against his side."Stay low," Ronan whispered, pulling me down beside him at the top of the rise.Below us, the road was blocked. Carts and ropes stretched across it. Soldiers pulled travelers aside one by one and went through their bags and papers under torchlight. A notice was nailed to a wooden post, and even from far away, I could read my own name.Luna Hart has been identified as a carrier of restricted Crown property. Any person assisting her is to be detained. No explanation. Nothing about the plate or the order. Just my name, turned into a warning.Ronan pulled me back from the edge before a patrol came this way. "They're not just hunting a document anymore," he said quietly. "They're turning the whole territory against you."We found shelter under a crumbling stone bridge, and the fighting started almost right away."If she keep

The lock turned. Ronan was already moving, stepping in front of Luna before the sound had even sunk in."Quiet," he breathed.A thin beam of light swept across the chamber. A voice followed it, flat and cold. "The document is all that matters. Leave the others if you have to."Luna's stomach dropped. They weren't searching anymore. They knew exactly what had been found, and exactly where.Ronan pointed toward the far end of the chamber, but the passage was narrow, and Tomas could barely stand. One hand was pressed against the wall, his knuckles white."Stop!" a voice shouted behind them. They ran.The passage dropped into a crumbling staircase. The stone was slick under their feet, and Tomas got slower with every turn."Keep moving," Ronan urged. Then Tomas collapsed against the wall. His breath came in short, wet gasps. His wound had torn open, and blood was soaking through his shirt."We don't have time," Ronan said. He looked at Luna, almost begging."Help him," Luna told the oth

"Whatever you're hoping to find at the First House is already dead."His knees gave out before I could ask him anything. We checked him over. There was a deep cut along his side, and his skin was pale and dry from thirst. Ronan kept his hand near his blade the whole time."Help him," I said."He knew where we were going," Ronan said quietly. "That's not luck.""If we leave him here to die, we're no better than the people hunting

We ran until the Watchtower disappeared behind the hills, the sound of our own breathing louder than anything else in the dark.I kept looking back anyway, even after there was nothing left to see."They didn't search the whole tower," Ronan said quietly, once we'd slowed enough to catch our breath. "They went straight to the records room.""They knew what they wanted before we did," I said, and the thought settled cold in my chest. How long had Marcus been watched, tracked, hunted, before I ever found that first black cloth in the Council chamber?Selene fell into step beside me, frowning back toward the tower. "They never really pursued us.""You're sure?" I asked."I'm sure," she said. "Two riders went straight for the records room. The others barely glanced toward the passage we used."Pell nodded slowly, working it through. "Their target wasn't Luna. It was Marcus."That shock me more than I expected. Why would anyone want Marcus badly enough to send riders after him in the middl
