Synopsis Luna Hart has spent her whole life in the shadow of her family's disgrace, so when she's chosen as Alpha Kane Voss's fated mate, she lets herself hope it might finally change things. Instead, Kane rejects her in front of the entire pack on their bonding night, shattering her in public and sending her fleeing into forbidden territory. What she doesn't know is that her rejection was never about her at all and the wolf that finds her in the forest isn't packed. He's Ronan Ashgrave, the Lycan King: older, more powerful, and far more dangerous than any Alpha, a being packs are taught to fear and never approach. Ronan doesn't punish her. He protects her. And the closer Luna gets to him, the more she uncovers: a manufactured mate-bond, a generations-old curse tied to her bloodline, and a political war brewing between the wolf packs and the Lycan throne with her caught at the center of it. As Luna untangles who orchestrated her humiliation and why, she has to decide whether to fight to reclaim the life that was stolen from her, or step into a power she never knew she had one that could make her a queen, or get her killed. Torn between the Alpha who betrayed her and the king who claimed her, Luna's choice won't just decide her future. It'll decide the fate of every wolf in the territory.

Chapter 1: The Rejection

The ballroom smelled like roses and lies.

I stood at the center of it in a white dress that felt more like a costume than a wedding gown, watching two hundred pack members stare at me like I was something they'd found stuck to the bottom of their shoe. My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against my thighs so nobody would notice, but wolves noticed everything. That's the whole problem with being surrounded by people who can smell fear.

Alpha Kane Voss stood three feet away from me, close enough to touch, far enough to matter. He hadn't looked at me once since the ceremony started. Not once. His jaw was tight, his eyes fixed somewhere over my shoulder like I was furniture blocking his view of something more interesting.

I'd told myself all morning this was a good thing. An honor, even. The disgraced Hart bloodline, finally elevated by a mate-bond to the strongest Alpha in the territory. My mother had cried happy tears while lacing up my dress. My father hadn't cried at all — he never did — but he'd looked at me with something close to pride, and for a girl who'd spent her whole life being whispered about in hallways, pride from him meant more than it should have.

I should've known better. Nothing good in my life ever stayed good long enough to matter.

"Do you, Kane Voss, accept Luna Hart as your fated mate, bonded before the pack and before the moon?" the Elder asked.

The silence that followed lasted maybe three seconds. It felt like three years.

Kane's mouth opened. And then he said the words that ended my life as I knew it.

"I reject this bond."

The room didn't gasp so much as it inhaled all at once, a collective sound like the whole building sucking in air before a scream. I stood there frozen, waiting for my brain to catch up with what my ears had just heard, because surely — surely — I'd misunderstood.

"Kane." My voice came out smaller than I wanted it to. "What are you doing?"

He finally looked at me. And there was nothing in his eyes. No apology, no regret, nothing. Just cold, flat resolve, like he'd rehearsed this moment a hundred times in his head and was relieved to finally get it over with.

"I reject the bond," he said again, louder this time, so the whole pack could hear it clearly. "Luna Hart is not fit to stand beside me as Alpha female. This union is dissolved."

The pain hit me somewhere between my ribs, sharp and physical, like something inside my chest had been ripped out with bare hands. A rejected mate-bond isn't just heartbreak. It's biological. It's a wound that goes down into the marrow, a wolf's body screaming that it's been discarded by the one thing it was built to need. I actually staggered, one hand flying out to grab the nearest chair before my knees gave out completely.

Whispers erupted around the room. I heard my mother's voice somewhere in the crowd, high and panicked. I heard someone laugh — actually laugh — and that was the sound that finally broke whatever was left holding me together.

I didn't wait for permission. I didn't look at my father, didn't look at Kane, didn't look at anyone. I turned and ran, dressed fisted in both hands, out through the ballroom doors and into the cold night air, past guards who didn't bother stopping me because why would they. Nobody chases a rejected mate. You let her run. You let her humiliation play out somewhere private, so the pack doesn't have to watch the mess.

I ran until the manicured pack grounds gave way to real forest, until my lungs burned and my bare feet were cut up from roots and stone, until the music and the laughter behind me faded into nothing but wind and my own ragged breathing. I didn't have a plan. I didn't have anywhere to go. I just needed to be somewhere Kane Voss's rejection couldn't follow me, and some distant, numb part of my brain understood that no such place existed. Rejection doesn't stay behind. It rides in your blood forever.

I finally stopped when my body simply refused to run anymore, collapsing against the base of a massive oak tree, dress torn, mascara certainly ruined, chest heaving. The forest around me was dense and unfamiliar, thick with shadows that didn't feel like pack territory anymore. I hadn't realized how far I'd run.

That should have scared me. Later, I'd wonder why it didn't.

A twig snapped somewhere to my left.

I went still, every instinct in my body sharpening at once despite the exhaustion, despite the pain still throbbing through my ribs like a second heartbeat. My eyes scanned the tree line, and for a moment I saw nothing — just darkness, just the shift of wind through leaves.

Then two eyes opened in the black.

Not pack-wolf eyes. I'd grown up around shifters my whole life, knew every subtle color and shade our eyes carried depending on bloodline and rank. These eyes were nothing like that. They were a deep, molten gold that seemed to glow faintly even without moonlight touching them, set into a face — a wolf's face — easily twice the size of any wolf I'd ever seen in my life.

I didn't move. I couldn't have moved if I'd tried.

The wolf stepped fully out of the shadows, massive shoulders rolling with each slow, deliberate step, muscles shifting like something out of a nightmare and a dream at the same time. It should have terrified me. Some wild, unfamiliar part of me — the part still raw and wounded from Kane's rejection — didn't feel terror at all.

It felt recognition.

The wolf stopped a few feet away, studying me with an intensity that made the hair on my arms stand up, gold eyes locked onto mine like it was reading something written under my skin. Then, slowly, deliberately, it lowered its massive head — not in submission, not exactly, but in something closer to acknowledgment.

Like it had been looking for me.

Like it already knew exactly who I was.
