LOGINWe rode through the night without stopping.
I sat on a heavy brown warhorse right behind Valen, holding onto his waist so I wouldn't fall off. Every time the horse took a hard step, my chest pressed against his back, and that strange, warm energy from our mate bond flared up again. It was exhausting trying to fight it.
By the time the sun started coming up over the mountains, the forest opened up into a huge valley.
In the middle of the valley sat the Capital.
It was a giant city built entirely of dark grey stone, surrounded by walls so tall they blocked out half the sky. At the very top, sitting on a jagged cliff, was the Royal Castle.
"Is that where we're going?" I asked, raising my voice over the sound of the horses' hooves.
"That's home," Valen said, his voice flat. "Or a cage, depending on the day."
As we got closer to the main gates, I noticed small groups of citizens standing along the side of the dirt road. They were thin, tired-looking shifters wearing ragged clothes. When Valen rode past, they bowed their heads, but nobody cheered. They looked hungry and scared.
"Your people don't look very happy," I murmured, leaning in a bit closer to his ear.
"The land is dying, Lyra," Valen replied, his jaw tightening. "The crops won't grow, and our magic is drying up. If we don't open that old treaty and fix the blood lock soon, my people will starve by winter."
He didn't say the rest out loud, but he didn't have to: And if I fail, they'll turn on me.
We reached the massive iron gates. The moment the guards on top of the wall saw Valen, they blew a horn and pulled the heavy chains to lift the gate.
"Make way for the King!" Captain Thorne shouted, riding ahead of us.
We entered the city streets, surrounded by dozens of armed guards. But as we rode through the central plaza, the crowd suddenly grew thicker and much more hostile.
Word had clearly traveled fast.
People were pointing at me. They weren't looking at my face; they were staring at my bare shoulder, where my glowing mate mark was still faintly visible under Valen’s coat.
"Is that a human?" a woman hissed from the crowd.
"Look at her eyes! She’s a Nightshade!" an old man yelled, throwing a small stone that bounced off Valen’s shoulder armor. "She’s a cursed witch!"
"She's going to ruin us!" another voice shouted.
I pulled Valen’s coat tighter around myself, trying to shrink back, but Valen immediately pulled his horse to a dead stop.
He turned his head and glared at the crowd with cold, glowing gold eyes. The pressure in the air spiked so fast that the yelling instantly died down. Everyone took three big steps backward, dropping their gaze to the cobblestones.
"Anyone who throws another stone will answer to my blade," Valen said, his voice ringing through the square.
Nobody moved. Nobody said a word.
Valen kicked the horse forward again, leading us straight up the steep, winding path toward the castle gates.
"You don't have to fight them for me," I said quietly, looking down at my hands. "They're right to be mad. My ancestors were your enemies."
"I'm not fighting for your feelings, Lyra," Valen said, though his hand briefly reached back and rested over mine on his waist. "I'm telling them who rules here. There's a difference."
We finally pulled up in front of the giant wooden castle doors. Stable boys ran out to take the horses, and Valen swung his leg over, hopping off smoothly before reaching up to help me down.
The second my feet hit the ground, a loud, sharp voice echoed across the stone courtyard.
"Valen! What is the meaning of this madness?"
A tall woman in a dark purple silk dress was sweeping down the grand staircase toward us. She had sharp, high cheekbones, dark hair pulled up into a tight bun, and eyes that looked as cold as ice. Two heavy-armored guards walked right behind her.
Valen didn't even flinch. "Hello, Lady Karen."
"Don't 'hello' me!" Lady Karen snapped, stopping a few feet away. Her eyes slid over to me, looking me up and down like I was trash washed up on the shore. "The guards at the gate said you brought a stray girl into the castle. Worse, they say she carries the forbidden mark!"
"She is my mate, Karen," Valen said plainly, taking a step to block her view of me. "And you will address her with respect."
Lady Karen let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "Your mate? A bloodless orphan with enemy eyes? Have you lost your mind? The High Council will never allow this! They are waiting in the throne room right now to demand answers about the border treaty!"
Valen’s face turned to stone. "Then let's not keep them waiting."
He turned to me, offering his arm. "Come on, Lyra. Let's go meet the people who want you dead."
I took a deep breath, straightened my back, and placed my hand on his arm. "Lead the way."
We walked up the grand stairs, leaving Lady Karen fuming behind us. But as we pushed open the heavy double doors leading into the throne room, the strange voice in my head whispered again, louder this time:
Under the throne... the silver key is under the throne...
My heart did a sudden flip. I looked up at the huge golden throne at the end of the room and realized the secret blood lock wasn't just on the paper Valen showed me.
The entire castle was built on top of it.
The Temple of the Sun Tears towered above us like a forgotten god carved into the heart of the glacier.Thick blue ice wrapped its ancient white marble pillars, shining faintly under the dancing green northern lights. A massive flight of stone stairs stretched upward from the snowy canyon floor, disappearing into the vast, arched entrance of the mountain shrine."Set up a perimeter at the base of the stairs!" Captain Thorne ordered, his frost-covered voice echoing down the line. "Alexander, take four men and guard the war-sleds. Nothing gets up those steps!""Understood, Captain," Alexander shouted back, his blade drawn as the High Guard took their positions in the snow, locking their heavy iron shields together.Valen turned to me, his large hand gently cupping the side of my face. His golden Alpha eyes were warm, full of an intense, unyielding love that made the freezing Arctic wind disappear."This is it, Lyra," Valen whispered, his thumb brushing a stray strand of silver hair from
The narrow canyon erupted into pure, violent chaos.Hundreds of ice-corrupted shadow beasts surged forward, their clawed paws shattering the frozen ground as they charged down the narrow pass. Their crimson eyes glowed with mindless malice, their deep growls echoing off the blue glacier walls like thunder."Form a defensive wall! Protect the Queen!" Captain Thorne shouted, leaping off the secondary sled with his heavy shield raised."Hold the line!" Alexander commanded, his steel blade flashing in the dim light as the High Guard formed a tight semi-circle around my war-sled.Valen didn't wait for the horde to reach us.He lunged forward into the snow, his broadsword burning with a blinding sun-fire that melted the ice beneath his boots instantly. With a single, brutal horizontal arc of his blade, Valen unleashed a crescent wave of golden heat that slammed directly into the front rank of the enemy!BOOM!The explosive shockwave vaporized a dozen shadow beasts into black ash, sending me
The freezing northern wind howled like a pack of starved wolves as our heavy war-sleds glided over the endless desert of ice and snow. The Sanctuary was far behind us now. Here, in the heart of the Frozen Wastes, the sun never fully rose. The sky was a constant, bruising shade of dark purple, lit only by the pale green ribbons of the northern lights dancing across the clouds.I sat huddled in the center of the lead sled, wrapped in heavy white bear furs. Baby Aurora was strapped securely against my chest in her enchanted harness, sleeping peacefully despite the brutal storm. My silver fire glowed faintly beneath my furs, acting as a personal furnace to keep my daughter warm against the lethal cold.Beside me, Valen stood tall at the front of the sled, holding the thick leather reins of four massive armored dire-wolves. His heavy fur cloak flapped violently in the arctic gale, but he stood like a pillar of solid rock, his golden Alpha eyes scanning the dark horizon for any sign of dang
The bright blue light filled our private bedchamber with an intense, holy radiance, casting long, dramatic shadows against the stone walls.Valen instantly pulled me behind him, his hand reaching for the hilt of his sword as his golden Alpha aura surged up to protect us. But there was no threat in the room.In her wooden cradle, baby Aurora was floating three inches above her soft blankets, fast asleep! The broken celestial mark on her tiny wrist was glowing like a brilliant blue star, projecting a vast, shifting map across the high arched ceiling above our heads."Valen, look..." I whispered, stepping around his side and staring up at the luminous projection in absolute awe.The glowing projection wasn't just a map of our realm it displayed ancient mountain ranges, forgotten rivers, and hidden sanctuaries that had been wiped from modern history books thousands of years ago.Glowing celestial runes flowed across the image like rivers of liquid light, spinning slowly around a single po
The heavy silence left behind by the dragons felt colder than the mountain wind.Valen stood on the edge of the snowy cliff, his large, scarred shoulders tense as he stared into the dark clouds where Ignis had vanished. His broadsword’s golden sun-fire slowly died out, leaving behind only thin wisps of grey smoke rising from the hot steel."Valen..." I whispered, stepping up beside him through the melted snow.I reached out and placed my hand gently on his lower arm. His muscles were rock-hard, vibrating with suppressed rage, terror, and pure grief. When Valen turned his head to look at me, my breath caught in my throat. The mighty Alpha King the fearless warrior who had torn apart anti-magic iron with his bare hands had tears shining in his golden eyes."Three days, Lyra," Valen choked out, his deep voice cracking with unbearable pain. "He gave us three days to choose between giving away our daughter or letting our entire kingdom burn.""We are not giving her up, Valen," I declared f
The massive bronze dragon shifted its talons on the marble archway, crushing the white stone into fine dust. Its molten golden eyes burned with an ancient, terrifying intellect as it looked up at our small ridge."Alpha King!" the dragon’s voice thundered, vibrating through the cold air so hard the snow fell from the surrounding pine trees. "You speak with the arrogance of a mortal wolf. You do not understand what your child carries!"Valen didn't yield an inch. He stood tall on the ridge, his broadsword blazing with golden sun-fire that cast long, fierce shadows behind us."I know she is my blood, and I know I will tear down the sky before I let anyone take her!" Valen roared back, his voice thick with unyielding Alpha dominance.I held baby Aurora tighter against my chest, her tiny blanket tucked safely inside my leather coat. My silver fire flickered to life along my right forearm, wrapping us in a protective shield of sacred light. Beside me, baby Aurora’s small wrist mark pulsed
