LOGIN"Hold my hand or stay in the dirt," Valen said. He sounded completely calm, even with all the shouting going on outside.
I didn't argue. I just grabbed his hand. The moment our fingers touched, a weird spark of electricity shot up my arm, making my heart thump against my ribs.
Valen kicked the carriage door right off its hinges. The heavy piece of wood flew into the dark woods, slamming into one of Marcus’s men so hard the guy dropped like a sack of rocks.
We scrambled out of the broken carriage and stepped onto the damp grass.
Five of Marcus’s heavy guards were standing over Valen’s injured men. A few feet away, Marcus was holding a loaded crossbow, looking at us with a nasty grin.
"Well, look at that," Marcus sneered, taking a step closer. "The big, bad Lycan King, crawling out of the mud for a useless Null."
"She isn't a Null, Marcus," Valen said quietly. He stepped right in front of me and pulled out his sword. "And you should have brought more men."
"I brought enough to collect two rewards," Marcus barked. "Kill the King! Bring me the girl!"
Three guards charged at us at the same time.
Valen moved so fast it barely made sense. He ducked under the first guy's sword, grabbed him by the shirt, and threw him right into the second guard. Metal crashed against metal as they tumbled into the dirt.
Even while fighting off two men, Valen kept one arm back, shielding me. But I wasn't going to just stand there and watch.
A third guard, a huge guy with a deep scar on his cheek, bypassed Valen entirely and ran straight at me with a knife.
"Got you, little stray," he growled.
Usually, I would have panicked and run. But the strange heat burning under my skin made everything feel like it was moving in slow motion. My purple eyes locked onto his hands.
When he lunged forward, I didn't back up. I stepped right into his space.
I dodged his blade, grabbed his thick wrist, and pushed that hot, weird energy in my chest right down into my arm. A tiny spark of purple light flashed over my knuckles.
The guard let out a choked yell as a wave of force blasted him backward, slamming his back against a massive tree. He slid down into the grass, totally knocked out.
I stared down at my shaking hands. Did I just do that? Without even shifting?
Valen glanced back over his shoulder, his gold eyes wide. "Not bad for a stray."
"I told you," I gasped, wiping sweat from my forehead. "I don't need a babysitter."
"Good, because we aren't done yet," he said, turning back to Marcus.
Marcus’s face had gone completely pale. He looked at his knocked-out guards, then at my glowing eyes, and finally at Valen, who was walking toward him step by step.
"Stay back!" Marcus yelled, his hands shaking as he tried to reload his crossbow. "I'll shoot her!"
"You won't get the chance," Valen said.
Before Valen could take another step, a loud horn blasted through the woods.
HOOOOWWWWL.
It wasn't a pack horn. It was a Royal horn.
Dozens of fresh riders in dark armor burst through the trees into the clearing, their swords drawn. Valen’s main army had finally found us.
Marcus dropped his crossbow in terror, scrambled onto his horse, and dug his heels in, galloping off into the dark forest before anyone could catch him.
"Let him go," Valen ordered his soldiers as they surrounded us and dropped to one knee. "He won't get far."
The captain of the guard hurried up to Valen, looking panicked. "Your Majesty! Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Valen said, though he swayed a little on his feet. The poison he tried to pull out of me earlier was clearly draining his strength.
The captain looked over at me, his eyes landing on my glowing purple eyes and the fresh mark on my shoulder. He gasped and pulled his sword out. "Your Majesty, get away from her! That's... that's the forbidden crest!"
In a second, every soldier in the clearing raised their weapons, pointing them straight at my chest.
My stomach dropped. I was surrounded by fifty armed soldiers who looked like they wanted to tear me apart.
Valen stepped right in front of their blades, his voice dropping to a low growl that made the dirt vibrate under my boots.
"Put your weapons down," Valen said, his eyes flashing a dangerous gold. "Touch her, and I will kill every single one of you."
The captain blinked, completely stunned. "Sire... she has enemy blood! She is dangerous!"
"She is my mate," Valen snapped.
The soldiers gasped. They slowly lowered their swords, but they didn't stop staring at me like I was a monster.
Valen turned back around to look at me. He was pale, and his gaze moved from my mark straight to my purple eyes. The mate feeling was pulling hard on both of us, but our families' dark history hung right between us.
"You saved my life twice tonight, Lyra," Valen whispered, keeping his voice low so only I could hear. "But my people will execute you the second we enter the city if they think you're a spy."
"Then why take me there?" I asked, looking right at him. "You can just let me go right now."
Valen leaned in a little closer, his breath warm against my cheek.
"Because I need you to fix the treaty," he murmured, his fingers brushing against mine. "And because now that I know you're my mate... I'm not letting you out of my sight."
He turned back to his captain. "Get the horses ready. We ride for the Capital right now."
As I walked toward one of the horses, a cold shiver ran down my back. I looked down at my hand. The silver light under my skin was pulsing, and a soft, whispered voice a voice inside my head that definitely didn't belong to a wolf spoke for the very first time:
Go to the castle, child... and take back what belongs to us.
The Temple of the Sun Tears towered above us like a forgotten god carved into the heart of the glacier.Thick blue ice wrapped its ancient white marble pillars, shining faintly under the dancing green northern lights. A massive flight of stone stairs stretched upward from the snowy canyon floor, disappearing into the vast, arched entrance of the mountain shrine."Set up a perimeter at the base of the stairs!" Captain Thorne ordered, his frost-covered voice echoing down the line. "Alexander, take four men and guard the war-sleds. Nothing gets up those steps!""Understood, Captain," Alexander shouted back, his blade drawn as the High Guard took their positions in the snow, locking their heavy iron shields together.Valen turned to me, his large hand gently cupping the side of my face. His golden Alpha eyes were warm, full of an intense, unyielding love that made the freezing Arctic wind disappear."This is it, Lyra," Valen whispered, his thumb brushing a stray strand of silver hair from
The narrow canyon erupted into pure, violent chaos.Hundreds of ice-corrupted shadow beasts surged forward, their clawed paws shattering the frozen ground as they charged down the narrow pass. Their crimson eyes glowed with mindless malice, their deep growls echoing off the blue glacier walls like thunder."Form a defensive wall! Protect the Queen!" Captain Thorne shouted, leaping off the secondary sled with his heavy shield raised."Hold the line!" Alexander commanded, his steel blade flashing in the dim light as the High Guard formed a tight semi-circle around my war-sled.Valen didn't wait for the horde to reach us.He lunged forward into the snow, his broadsword burning with a blinding sun-fire that melted the ice beneath his boots instantly. With a single, brutal horizontal arc of his blade, Valen unleashed a crescent wave of golden heat that slammed directly into the front rank of the enemy!BOOM!The explosive shockwave vaporized a dozen shadow beasts into black ash, sending me
The freezing northern wind howled like a pack of starved wolves as our heavy war-sleds glided over the endless desert of ice and snow. The Sanctuary was far behind us now. Here, in the heart of the Frozen Wastes, the sun never fully rose. The sky was a constant, bruising shade of dark purple, lit only by the pale green ribbons of the northern lights dancing across the clouds.I sat huddled in the center of the lead sled, wrapped in heavy white bear furs. Baby Aurora was strapped securely against my chest in her enchanted harness, sleeping peacefully despite the brutal storm. My silver fire glowed faintly beneath my furs, acting as a personal furnace to keep my daughter warm against the lethal cold.Beside me, Valen stood tall at the front of the sled, holding the thick leather reins of four massive armored dire-wolves. His heavy fur cloak flapped violently in the arctic gale, but he stood like a pillar of solid rock, his golden Alpha eyes scanning the dark horizon for any sign of dang
The bright blue light filled our private bedchamber with an intense, holy radiance, casting long, dramatic shadows against the stone walls.Valen instantly pulled me behind him, his hand reaching for the hilt of his sword as his golden Alpha aura surged up to protect us. But there was no threat in the room.In her wooden cradle, baby Aurora was floating three inches above her soft blankets, fast asleep! The broken celestial mark on her tiny wrist was glowing like a brilliant blue star, projecting a vast, shifting map across the high arched ceiling above our heads."Valen, look..." I whispered, stepping around his side and staring up at the luminous projection in absolute awe.The glowing projection wasn't just a map of our realm it displayed ancient mountain ranges, forgotten rivers, and hidden sanctuaries that had been wiped from modern history books thousands of years ago.Glowing celestial runes flowed across the image like rivers of liquid light, spinning slowly around a single po
The heavy silence left behind by the dragons felt colder than the mountain wind.Valen stood on the edge of the snowy cliff, his large, scarred shoulders tense as he stared into the dark clouds where Ignis had vanished. His broadsword’s golden sun-fire slowly died out, leaving behind only thin wisps of grey smoke rising from the hot steel."Valen..." I whispered, stepping up beside him through the melted snow.I reached out and placed my hand gently on his lower arm. His muscles were rock-hard, vibrating with suppressed rage, terror, and pure grief. When Valen turned his head to look at me, my breath caught in my throat. The mighty Alpha King the fearless warrior who had torn apart anti-magic iron with his bare hands had tears shining in his golden eyes."Three days, Lyra," Valen choked out, his deep voice cracking with unbearable pain. "He gave us three days to choose between giving away our daughter or letting our entire kingdom burn.""We are not giving her up, Valen," I declared f
The massive bronze dragon shifted its talons on the marble archway, crushing the white stone into fine dust. Its molten golden eyes burned with an ancient, terrifying intellect as it looked up at our small ridge."Alpha King!" the dragon’s voice thundered, vibrating through the cold air so hard the snow fell from the surrounding pine trees. "You speak with the arrogance of a mortal wolf. You do not understand what your child carries!"Valen didn't yield an inch. He stood tall on the ridge, his broadsword blazing with golden sun-fire that cast long, fierce shadows behind us."I know she is my blood, and I know I will tear down the sky before I let anyone take her!" Valen roared back, his voice thick with unyielding Alpha dominance.I held baby Aurora tighter against my chest, her tiny blanket tucked safely inside my leather coat. My silver fire flickered to life along my right forearm, wrapping us in a protective shield of sacred light. Beside me, baby Aurora’s small wrist mark pulsed
