My heart skipped a beat at Reiner's revelation. The weight of his words pressed me down. Raphael and Aurora had been lovers? I struggled to keep my composure, the shock threatening to break my resolve. I knew that he just wanted to discourage me.

"That's... interesting," I managed to say, my voice strained. "But it doesn't change anything."

Reiner chuckled, a dark, mirthless sound. It was the first time I had heard him laugh. It was a chilling sound. Nova squirmed in me, made uncomfortable by his presence. "Doesn't it? Aurora has a significant advantage. She knows him better than anyone else. She knows his strengths, his weaknesses. They have a history. Why disgrace yourself by trying to win a losing battle?"

"I don't care about their history," I retorted, my voice gaining strength. "I care about the future. I and my mate's future."

His eyes gleamed with a predatory intensity. "We'll see, princess. We'll see."

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me to grapple with
