Jasper “What is it?” I enquired and she gave me a playful smile. “A simple one to see if you could be considered worthy by our Goddess.” I looked behind her and at the tall imposing statue of a Goddess that loomed over us, her head almost touching the ceiling. She had the face of a phoenix and the body of a woman. The statue seemed to look down at us, the sharp angular eyes that seemed to emit some powerful fire beams and burn down whoever dared to displease her. As I observed the statue of the Goddess behind me, Keltia explained, “She is Goddess Fyere. The first phoenix Goddess who could not only harbor the power of fire but also all other elements.” “So something happened that she lost the other ones?” I enquired and I saw Keltia shift uncomfortably in her seat. Apparently, talking about the Goddess’ shortcomings or misdeeds would not make it any easier for me. “Do not try to mock my God. Yours isn’t free of any taint either” She said and I stiffened. I was neither a believer
Jasper I let out an irritated breath, took the small vial from her, and safely tucked it in my pockets. Keltia came with me to the door to see me out and stuck her staff in one of the walls. Though I believed it was less about being courteous to her guest and more about not wanting me to wander into her territory unsupervised. But it did not matter as I did not plan to invade her space as of now. If things went downhill in the future and I was desperate to receive the ink, maybe I would do that. For now, I just wanted to get back to Celia. The door opened and I stepped out of it and was greeted by the cold night again. The fresh air of the forest felt nice and I took lungfuls of it after being enclosed in that dimly lit cave for a long time. The way Keltia had spoken about the favor and the payment for next time was something that bothered me but I pushed that worry to the back of my mind. I reminded myself that I had to return to Celia and take her back to the palace. The Vampire
CeliaThe steady rhythm of the nightsteed’s hooves clopping against the road lulled me to sleep and I was not even aware of how time flew and how we reached the castle. Somebody shook me and it took them three tries to wake me up. I opened my eyes, expecting it to be Jasper but it was Grace. She smiled at me and spoke, “My lady. Let us get you to your room then you can sleep again”I straightened my back. My neck was feeling a bit sore after having leaned on the coach’s wall awkwardly for the length of the ride.“Wh-where is Jasper?” I asked and Celia answered, “He went to do some work and asked me to get you to your room.”I let her help me get out of the carriage. In a weird sense of way, coming back to the palace somehow made me feel like I was returning to a familiar place. It would be a far cry to call it my home but it did make me feel as if I could rest without getting thrown out of the room or attacked in my sleep. As I and Grace chatted on our way back to my room, I saw Matr
CeliaThe next day I was woken pretty early by Grace to get ready for our drive to the Vampire ball. I was too anxious to eat and only forced down half a piece of bread down my throat when Grace would not stop pestering me about it.I somehow gulped the tea to calm my nerves and let Grace do my hair and choose a dress for me. She pulled out a simple and elegant pink colored gown for the travel.“How is this one, my lady?” She enquired as she held the dress up for me to examine. I only waved my hand away and mumbled, “Whatever”She braided my hair and packed a few essential belongings before reminding me a dozen times how to apply make up.That was yet another small but important lesson Jasper had asked her to give me. There would be no maids around me to help in the Vampire castle so I would be pretty much on my own.She had detailed and given me a make up tutorial detailing what type of make up to put on what type of occasion, what shades go best with what types of dress colors etc
Celia Jasper was sitting on the seat opposite of me, his eyes fixated on the map that he held in his hand. I looked outside the windows by lifting the drapes a little. The forest path through which we were traveling was quite dense. The road was less used by travelers and was just the one Jasper had shown me earlier in his study. This route cut down our travel time by more than half though it meant we had to travel through a dense thicket.I craned my neck outside the window and noticed that the tree trunks were wide and thick, their dense leaves hiding the sun as we moved deeper into the forest. It was broad daylight but due to the thick foliage, it felt like we were traveling through the night. There was also a certain cold seeping in through the forest. The fact that our carriage was made of metal meant that the walls were doing a poor job of insulating us from the chilly winds.I looked around to find where the lanterns were but could not find them. Feeling confused, I enquired t
CeliaThe carriage was probably going through a rocky terrain again as it felt like our coachman, Henry, simply wanted me to keep colliding with Jasper’s chest. His grip on me tightened as we wobbled along with the carriage that rattled on the dirt ridden road. “Perhaps, I should get back to my seat” I offered but Jasper did not let go of me.“Get all the warmth you can from me, I cannot let you fall sick”But as I felt the chilly wave of cold around me, I recalled something again,“Did you not say that the Vampire lord’s castle sat on the edge of the Azureus Ocean?”Jasper nodded, “I did”“Then how come it is cold here? Aren’t places around oceans supposed to be humid?”“Vampires use magic to regulate the temperature around them. Some places are colder than the rest and if their population is more or a stronger vampire is in town, he will you know…’accessorize the place according to his wishes”I raised my eyebrow at that.“So they also have magic like witches…werewolves and lycans
CeliaThe soft clicking of the nightsteed’s hooves against the forest ground had stopped altogether. I could hear the soft rustling of leaves in the background like white noise.I inhaled a breath, I could still smell the familiar scent of Jasper around me. His hands were around me and I was still nuzzled in his arms.“Wake up sleeping beauty” He murmured in my ears and I felt an electric current sizzle through me as his full lips lightly grazed my earlobe. My eyes felt heavy and my mind felt foggy. “You seemed to have got some nice beauty sleep” He said as I opened my eyes. When I looked around I saw the familiar carriage walls around me. “Where is Henry?” I asked and he gave me a puzzled look. “Where else would he be? He is driving the carriage”I craned my neck up and sure enough I saw the coachman getting down his seat.“Where are we?” I asked as I stifled a yawn.“We have reached Ivan’s castle. Time to rise and shine”He said as he held me by the waist and meant to pick me up b
CeliaAs we went down the stairs, I had a strange feeling settle in my stomach. The candle lights sent a soft glow on the walls and our shadows seemed to merge with the other vampires that lurked from every other corner.I looked at a pillar and saw a pair of bright eyes staring at me but then those eyes quickly disappeared.“Just how many people stay here?” I inquired as Isadora lead us to the dining room.“Well, the castle was deserted and the little numbers of vampires were scattered all over the forest. But ever since Lord Ivan’s arrival, more and more are returning to the castle.”“I see”“Speaking of the Vampire Lord, where is he?” Jasper quipped and Isadora turned to look at him.“Lord Ivan was prepared to receive you but some urgent work forced him to pay his attention elsewhere. For now, I am afraid, I will have to be your host”I furrowed my eyebrows. What work could be more important than meeting Jasper, the prince he had been eager to step into his castle?I had been half
